Q&A with book blogger Inga Silberg

31.5.11

Have you ever read a book that made you think 'wow'? If so, what book was it and why did it have such an effect on you?
Yes, definitely! There have been many of them, but this year there have so far been 2 books what had such an effect on me. The first one was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book is about a family in Afghanistan and about the war and how the family is affected by it. It was interesting and shocking at the same time. It was fascinating and captivating to read a book from an Afghani point of view. The book is partially biographical, so the writer experienced the terrors of the war. The author was born in Kabul and he moved to the US in 1980. Why did it have “the wow” effect? Because the author could describe the terrors of the war through the eyes of one family and there was hope after all. So much cruelty, so much love, so many cultural differences in the different regions in Afghanistan and interesting characters – all combined in one book. It was overwhelming for me and it was very very good book!
The second book this year which had such an effect on me was The Purge by Sofi Oksanen. Before I started reading Sofi Oksanen’s book, I’ve heard so many divided opinions about it in Estonia, especially because the story happens in Estonia starting from the 30s until 90s. It is very controversial book, because it shows a story of the Estonian woman seriously affected by the Second World War. It’s a sad and cruel story showing how war and love can sometimes influence people making some very nasty and morbid decisions. It’s a story, where time is one of the main characters.
Weird thing is that usually I’m not very fond of books describing war as such. Both of these books are from genre which I read seldom, but I’m sincerely glad that I found these books. I would highly recommend them to everybody, who likes to read psychological dramas. Little word of warning too – both The Kite Runner and The Purge are not suitable for very young readers, they have some very cruel scenes in it.

Who is your favourite author and why?
I have many authors I love, but since you ask about one and making me pick one, then I’d choose one author who has already passed away years ago and he belongs to the classical Russian authors – Mikhail Bulgakov. I love his books. One of my very favorite books through the time has been Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. You could actually call it paranormal book, because it has many characters that are not exactly human. His books seem totally surreal just like Dali’s paintings, but they have such a content which blows your mind away! He was capable of combining surrealism which was already at the border of being too weird with religion, balance between good and evil, philosophy. His books have so many layers, so every time I read his books, I find something new about them. Besides The Master and Margarita I also like his other books, to name a few: The Fatal Eggs, Heart of a Dog.

Who, or what, inspires you?
People do. It can be a hidden smile from a stranger, it can be a good word from people you don’t expect it from, it can be a thank you said not with lips, but with eyes and heart. I’ve always had an opinion that the “Devil is in the detail”. Luckily I’ve been blessed with the capability of enjoying and appreciating the small things in life. Small and simple things in life inspire me.

Where is your favourite place to write your blog?
That’s a good one! Embarrassingly enough my favorite place to write is either in my living room’s sofa or in bed. I’m using a laptop and I’ve never been a person reading or writing behind the desk.

Tell us a little about your favourite book...
Oh dear. I have hundreds of books in my shelves and the reason why I’ve bought them is that they have been my favorites at one specific time in my life. The book, I’m going to mention is one of them – Complete Fairy Tales by Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde is again one of the authors I consider being genius. Both his Complete Fairy Tales and Picture of Dorian Gray are simply brilliant! You know how lots of people like to use quotes from the books? I tried to do that with Oscar Wilde’s books… and I had to give up, because otherwise I would end up re-writing his books. Each sentence in his books is a brilliant thought! Coming back to Complete Fairy Tales, then these stories are not meant for children, but can be read by them. The way Wilde used the possibilities of the English language is amazing!

What is your favourite film that was based on a book?
The Lord of the Rings! Books are brilliant and the movies are absolutely fantastic!

If your favourite book was made into a film, who would you like to play the main characters?
It depends which favorite book it would be. Let’s make it even more interesting and bringing in a book from the contemporary literature. The book would be Overprotected by Jennifer Laurens and the actors I’d pick would be Reese Witherspoon for Ash, Colin Farell for Colin and Andy Garcia for Daddy. I know that both Reese and Colin would be little too old to play the roles, but anyway, it would be my pick.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I’ve been traveling a lot in my life and visited more than 40 countries on three different continents.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.

I’m a city girl living in a house on the country side which is already an interesting fact itself. During the summer I hear birds singing from early in the morning until sunset and during the winter I sometimes have more than 1 m of snow surrounding me. I’ve seen deer, foxes, wild boars, storks, eagles in my land I own. There is a river 200-300 m from my house. I live in the forest, but I miss the sea.

What fantastic answers! Thanks, Inga, for taking some time out to be interviewed!

30.5.11

I started writing down things when I was very young. Before I knew how to write, I would make up stories and act them out in front of my family. As a child and a teenager I was more of a poet: I wrote poems about love – especially tragic kind – and about animals. I also wrote songs, because at one point I wanted to be a singer, and essays, when I wanted to talk about something that was bugging me. My best friend and I used to share our stuff over the phone, because we were so proud of our scribbles :)) Oh, those were good times! Dreams were big and seemed just within our reach. I also kept journals at various times, mostly, in order to deal with my emotions, disappointments, doubts and fears.
When I was sixteen, I had an idea for Almendra, and, from that time on, I knew that I wanted to tackle prose and to become a real writer. But I didn't start writing my first book straightaway. I knew that I had to work on my writing skills and style, develop my voice and enlarge my vocabulary first, so I took to doing writing prompts, reading up on writing and writing fanfiction. When I thought I was ready, I finally started working on Almendra. I worked tirelessly and devotedly on her story during my university years, and she and her friends became a part of my life and even that of my family. When the book was complete, I tried getting it published and began sending out my submissions. As naïve as I was back then, I thought that acquiring an agent would be a piece of cake. But five years later the book was still where it had been before: in my computer folder.
Thankfully, five years in publishing industry saw many changes and made it possible to get published without acquiring an agent. I took a break from Almendra and started working on something entirely different: Jane Austen-esque Regency-set stories. The kind of stories that are not popular with the majority of Regency Romance fans, but the kind of stories that I like to read. Then, last year, I felt a great wave of nostalgia and reread Almendra. I remembered why I liked it so much and, encouraged by my family, submitted it to Girlebooks. They published my first Regency-set novel “Margaret's Rematch” and agreed to publish “Almendra: A Fairy-Tale” too.
Now I continue working in my two favourite genres: Fantasy and Regency. I have big plans for Almendra. Because I have a great deal of backstory, I want to write a prequel about the foundation of The Upper Kingdom as well as rework and expand Almendra's story into a three-book novel. As for my Regency-set stories, I've got loads of ideas for novellas, novels and even series of books. I would also like to try writing screenplays. And, though my transition from a writer to a published author isn't going as smoothly and successfully as I would have liked, I hope to have my own, devoted readership one day.

Asylum Lake by R.A Evans: a real page-turner

30.5.11

Being a real scaredy cat I usually tend to avoid reading anything that might freak me out a little, but lately I've succumbed to a number of thriller/horror movies (and really enjoyed them!) so I figured I would take the plunge and try to read something within the same genre. When I first read the blurb on Asylum Lake, I decided to give it a go.
The first night I started reading, I woke up in a cold sweat after having a really scary nightmare! It didn't put me off though and I persevered. I am so glad that I did. R.A Evans has a real talent for the written word and, other than the odd minor spelling error, I couldn't fault his beautiful prose. The story flowed brilliantly and I found it to be a real page-turner. Although I was expecting the ending to conclude with more of a bang, it did leave me feeling more than satisfied.
Asylum Lake would make a terrific movie.... are you listening Hollywood? R.A Evans is a name you should be taking notice of!
All in all, a fantastic thriller / horror (still not sure what to call it!). I shall eagerly await Evans' next novel.

Q&A with Author Nicole Ireland

29.5.11

Today I'm talking to Nicole Ireland, author of A Second Chance....

Have you ever read a book that made you think 'wow'? If so, what book was it and why did it have such an effect on you?

There have been a couple books that have caused that reaction in me.
One that really stands out in my mind, though, is PS I Love You by Cecelia Ahern. I found myself crying and laughing throughout that entire book. It was an emotional rollercoaster that left me thinking about how great a love like that would be – to have someone love you so much that he wants to leave a piece of himself behind to help you heal after his death…Oh my gosh! That’s the kind we all want, I think. My heart just aches thinking about it.

Who is your favourite author and why?
That’s tough. There are SO many authors that inspire me, but I have to give the cliché answer…Stephen King. You can’t grow up in Maine and not be familiar with his work. When I realized I wanted to write, he was the one I looked up to and wanted to be like. How could you not? His career has been phenomenal and inspiring.

Who, or what, inspires you?
So many things. First and foremost, my kids. My daughter inspired a series of children’s stories that I would love to publish one day. In fact, my dad is supposed to start working on the illustration for the first one, titled Blue Kitty, and from there, we’ll look into our options.
Also, my dad and mom inspire me. They’ve struggled a lot in their lives and when I see how far they’ve come over the years, I’m so extremely proud of them. They’ve helped shape me into the person I am today. So they inspire me to do better and be better. In fact, the characters of Evelyn and Frank in A Second Chance are based off my parents. It was my way of paying homage to them. I want to be just like them when I grow up.

Where is your favourite place to write?
Outside. There’s something so relaxing about being outside, the breeze blowing across your face as you type away. The smell, the sounds, the feel…it all inspires me and ultimately works its way into my writing. To see evidence of that, all you have to do is read the first page of A Second Chance. My love for fall is clearly showcased.

What is your book about?
I suck at summarizing what my story is about because I don’t want to give too much away. Essentially, though, it’s about a woman who finds out she has terminal cancer. And as her days on Earth draw to a close, she prays for a second chance. But if you want to know if she gets it, you have to read the story.

What is your favourite film that was based on a book?
PS I Love You.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the main characters?
I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot. I’m sure my closest friends will not be surprised by my answers.
In the roll of Jason, I would love to see Tahmoh Penikett. He’s proven time and time again that he can play emotional roles, and I love that about him. I think he could truly bring the character of Jason to life. When I picture how Jason reacts to Annabelle’s news, I get flashbacks of the character of Helo on Battlestar Galactica, who Tahmoh portrayed. He was such a strong character and would do anything for his wife and child.
For Annabelle, I’d have to say Eliza Dushku. I didn’t intentionally pair Tahmoh and her up because of their work together in Dollhouse. Tahmoh I thought of first. Eliza only came to mind recently. When her named popped up in my mind, I knew it was the right person. It’s purely coincidental that they once starred together on Dollhouse.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
Hm, a random fact that one knows yet…
I play a mean game of volleyball. Seriously, if there’s one sport I’m super confident at, it’s that one. I haven’t played in years, though. Had my high school actually had a team, I would have tried out. And I’m extremely confident I would have made it. Who wants to play?

Thanks Nicole. It's always a pleasure having you feature on my blog!

27.5.11

Thank you Suzy for inviting me onto your Blog, it is great to be here. And I would like to take this opportunity to wish you great success with your debut novel, Raven.

This month my third book, Sometimes It Happens… was published on Kindle. I am an Indie publisher and for this book I did things a little different. Firstly, I had an amazing mentor who is also a brilliant author, Helen Hollick. Helen saw me through the manuscript, checking for continuity, believability, repetition and so much more. Then to add the final sparkle, I had the cover designed by Cathy Helms at Avalon Graphics. The cover says so much about the story. I love the cover!
Sometimes It Happens…is about secrets, deception, lies, love and laughter. Winning the lottery was just the beginning. Nothing prepared Doreen Wilkinson for her holiday at Villas Bonitas and nothing prepared Villas Bonitas for Doreen Wilkinson. This is a holiday that will never be forgotten for many people!  Sometimes It Happens… Will make the reader laugh out loud, I certainly did writing it!

Sometimes It Happens…
Nothing in her wildest dreams had prepared Doreen Wilkinson for something like this. But then, nothing had prepared her for winning the lottery either.
Several million. Several million. Eleven million, three hundred and fifty four thousand, two hundred and ten pounds and nineteen pence to be precise.
She had giggled at the nineteen pence. “Break the bleedin’ bank that will!”
The media had made the comment a headline, “19p to break the bleedin’ bank!” splashed all over the Sun and Daily Mirror accompanied by her smiling face and a fountain spray of champagne. She had thought it a waste shaking that great big bottle and letting it fizz everywhere, but the reporters had told her to do it

You can download Sometimes It Happens… from Amazon. http://amzn.to/jB9lXh
These days, I live on the beautiful island of Lanzarote with my husband and two rescue doggies and it is wonderful place for inspiration to write. Though born in Yorkshire, UK we have lived in Suffolk and Surrey two lovely counties in the UK. Before moving to Lanzarote, we lived in Holland in the beautiful town of Leiden.
My other two novels, Magnolia House and Satchfield Hall are available in both paperback and Kindle editions. In between marketing and all my other commitments, I am busy with my fourth novel!
But despite the different stories of my three books, one thing I can say about all my novels, and that is, you will need a tissue!

Author spotlight and interview plans

26.5.11

Up until now I've been posting an Author Spotlight once a week but after giving it some thought I figured, 'why wait a whole week until the next one? Why not post more during the week to help these mighty fine authors get a bit more exposure?' So, you'll be seeing a few more of these in the future. Not only will they appear on the main body of my blog, but I will then copy them to my Author Spotlight page. As usual, they will also appear on my website (http://suzyturner.com)...... Every little helps!
I've also decided to begin a special author interview. I haven't chosen my questions just yet but I will pose the same questions to each author that features on my blog.
As I'm in the middle of writing December Moon: Part Two of The Raven Saga, the interviews probably won't start for a while though!
Speaking of December Moon. The write is going well. My imagination has been going into overdrive and the words have been bursting out of me at full flow. Although my eyes are getting more and more sore by the day, I'm confident I'll meet my deadline!
If you're an author and would like to feature on my blog and website, please don't hesitate to get in touch! I'm very friendly so feel free to say hello  :  )

Author Spotlight: Mandy Baggot

23.5.11

Mandy Baggot is a contemporary romantic fiction/chicklit author based in leafy Wiltshire. She is married and lives with her husband, two young daughters and two cats called Kravitz and Springsteen. At the moment she is published under internet based publisher Youwriteon.com in association with Legend Press but is actively seeking an agent and/or traditional publishing house. Mandy currently has three books in the marketplace, Excess All Areas, Breaking the Ice and Knowing Me Knowing You.

Excess All Areas tells the story of feisty size 20 heroine Freya and Hollywood film star Nicholas Kaden set against the backdrop of the beautiful island of Corfu. Freya is hiding a secret and so is Nicholas - can they trust each other enough to let go of the past? And do they have a future together?

Breaking the Ice is a story set around an ice skating show. Neurotic box office assistant Samantha fears for her job and her heart when she meets former ice skating star and reformed alcoholic Jimmy Lloyd. Can panic attacks really be endearing to someone who has had his pick of women?

Knowing Me Knowing You is a book about a relationship contest along the lines of The Generation Game and Mr & Mrs. Lawyer Kate is forced to take part, along with the date she knows nothing about, hired escort Joel Brown. Can they learn enough about each other to scoop the prize or is their game up before it has begun?
All books are available online from Amazon, Waterstones and W H Smith.
Mandy blogs at least once a week and you can see what she's up to on her website at http://www.mandybaggot.webs.com
In her spare time Mandy loves to travel, sing, read and bust some moves on the dancefloor.

Interviewed by the Algarve Resident

19.5.11

I'm delighted... last Friday I was interviewed by journalist Daisy Sampson, at the local weekly newspaper, The Algarve Resident, and I have just seen the result.
It's a brilliant interview by Daisy (if I don't say so myself!) and I'm over the moon! Can you tell?
The newspaper frequently puts some of their stories online and again I'm delighted to find the interview up there for the whole world to see. Have a look...

The Cast of Raven. Hollywood... are you following?

16.5.11

I've been having lots of fun on Google this morning... even though I was supposed to be writing! I had an interview to do and one of the questions sent me off on a complete tangent to getting some work done. I was asked, 'if Raven was going to be made into a movie, which actors would you choose to play your main characters.' Now can you see why I've been busy 'playing' casting agent?
It was way too much fun not to include them on my blog, so here's who I'd hire to play my characters:

Lilly Taylor, played by Georgie Henley
You'll recognise Georgie from the Narnia films. In my opinion, she made those films amazing. She was the most adorable little girl. She's grown up a bit since then, of course! But she would be perfect as Lilly with her beautiful eyes and British accent.

December Moon played by Chloe Moretz
I don't know if you've seen the vampire flick Let Me In? It's scary, creepy and a bit disturbing... well, I thought it was, anyway! Chloe played the scary blood sucking vamp girl amazingly well. December is nothing like that but I just thought Chloe looks the part. She has that quirkiness that is completely December. Photo: Angela George, Flickr

Jo played by Alexandra Daddario
Jo is absolutely beautiful, but doesn't really know it. Alexandra has the most stunning huge eyes that are just perfect for Jo. Perfect. You may recognise her from Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief!

Oliver played by Colby Paul
Oliver is Lilly's love interest and is the quintessential handsome boy next door. Need I say more? I mean, just look at the picture! Colby has had small roles in lots of TV shows like Supernatural, Pushing Daisies, Ghost Whisperer, etc.

Ben played by Charlie Cox
Ben is Oliver's brother. Okay, so they don't really look alike but then I don't look much like my brother or my sister! I first saw Charlie in Stardust and I just thought he was adorable. Ben is a veterinarian who cares for everyone and so he needs to be played by someone that has that charisma. Charlie easily has that.

Gabriel played by Gabriel Byrne
I've always loved Gabriel Byrne. I had a huge crush on him when we were both younger. Okay, maybe I still do, a bit. He is rather yummy though isn't he? Gabriel is Lilly's grandfather. Yes, he's native Canadian which doesn't quite fit Byrne's natural Irish looks but hey, he's an actor and he's incredibly versatile. I'm sure he could pull it off!

Rose played by Sally Fields
Although Rose is an older lady, she is one of the most beautiful ladies in Powell River. Sally fits the bill, easily. Plus, she needs to bear a slight resemblance to a certain other character and she does! I believe that Sally is one of the classiest and most amazing actresses of our time, which also helps.

Vivian played by Charlize Theron
Vivian is evil personified. But... she is one of the most beautiful creatures you'll ever see. Dye Charlize's hair red et voila! Photo Peadar O Sullivan

Serena played by Famke Janssen
Although Serena's actual role is a small one, it is incredibly important. I need someone with strong, stunning features, dark hair and olive skin. Famke is perfect. As soon as I saw a picture of her I just thought of Serena.

Neleh played by Michelle Ryan
Made famous in the UK for her role in Eastenders, Michelle went on to have a go at playing the Bionic Woman. I've never seen it myself so can't comment, but I was always impressed by her soap opera acting. Neleh's role, again, is a small one, but crucial. Neleh is Lilly's sister and don't you think these two could pass for sisters? Spooky eh?

Sammy Morton played by Jensen Ackles
Sammy is Neleh's love interest and is an important part of the whole story. Anyone who has seen Supernatural knows he's AWESOME and oh, so HANDSOME. He's perfect to play Sammy Morton!

Sometimes It Happens... a novel by Pauline Barclay

14.5.11

Fellow author and all-round lovely girl, Pauline Barclay, celebrated the launch of her latest novel, Sometimes It Happens, yesterday!!
The book sounds delicious... secrets, deception, lies, love and laughter. What more could we ask for in a super novel?

"Winning the lottery was just the beginning for Doreen Wilkinson, nothing prepared Doreen for her holiday at Villas Bonitas and nothing prepared Villas Bonitas for Doreen Wilkinson."

Check out Pauline's latest post about it... Scribbles!: Publication Day. Alternatively, just go straight to amazon and buy yourself a copy! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sometimes-It-Happens/dp/B0050K7NVE

The best of luck, Pauline!!

It's official... I'm a published e-author!

11.5.11

After months of hard work and days of trying to format my manuscript properly, this is it! My book is live! You can now purchase Raven at amazon and smashwords (and wherever smashwords distributes to). Isn't it great?!! I'm absolutely delighted.
When I first uploaded my book to smashwords, I had included a small image of a raven at the beginning of each chapter. Smashwords told me I was in the queue of well over 3000 other books so it took a day until it was finally up for me to check. Imagine my dismay when I opened the document to find the raven image as big as a page! So, I re-opened my document, deleted the raven, saved and uploaded. Once again, I had to queue (this time nearly 4000 books ahead of me). And there I was naively hoping that my book would just be published and up on the site instantaneously! How wrong could I be.
However, yesterday evening, Raven had reached the top of the queue and was live. I gingerly opened it up and hoped (fingers, legs, arms, eyes crossed) that it would be ok. It was fine, of course, but the odd thing? The raven is still there but a lot smaller! Very, very weird. Me no comprende!
Raven is also up on amazon but there are a couple of weird things I don't understand either. For instance, I put a price of 2.99 (dollars) and equivalent in UK and German currency. Yet when I open it up, it's on at 5.74! I've emailed them and currently waiting for their response. We'll see!
I also tried to do a search for my name (it's got to be done, hasn't it?!) but it showed nothing. Disappointing. Hopefully, it just takes a little for me to be entered into the database (that's what hubby says anyway!).
Right... I've babbled far too much this morning. I'm just so excited.... can you tell?
In the meantime, if you are feeling generous and need a good dose of fantasy... then please feel free to buy my book (hee hee hee).

My first ever interview!! I'm thrilled to bits... so thank you so much, Jamie, for inviting me to your blog to take part.

Trailer Park... fabulous!

4.5.11

I was recommended a great site yesterday. The site itself is the online home of author R.A Evans (check out his book Lake Asylum, it looks fantastic!) but one of the other things that's so good about the site is he has a 'Trailer Park'... for book trailers! He encourages writers to send in their links and he will include the trailer on there, in exchange for you plugging the site whenever you can. Not a bad swap if you ask me!
I've sent in my link this morning, hopefully he'll put it out for me, but we'll see.
In the meantime, go on over and have a look. There are some excellent trailers to be found... and you can always send him the link to your own. Worth a try, huh?
If you're reading, R.A. Evans... thanks!

She loves my book!!

2.5.11

I opened my inbox this morning to find a message from an old friend in England. I'd sent her my book (in Word) to read a while ago but she's just been too busy to get round to it - new job, holiday, etc. So imagine my surprise when I read this...

"Last night...I opened up your book to just re-read the first bit I'd read before when you had it on the website (authonomy.com).
It was about 1am before I stopped reading!!!!
I've got up today and I'm straight back into it. Can't put it down!
Gabriel has disappeared in the mountains!

I've so much I'm supposed to be doing today, but I'm hoping another hour with the word doc before I move will be the best plan.
I'd love to tell you all about my holiday and the new job, but I've a book to read!!!!!"

A couple of hours later, I received another email from her...
"I've finished the book, what a fabulous read it was. I can see the movie version already. It really would make a good movie.
However I've just got to know what happens to Lilly's dad.
Please tell me there's a Raven II?
All in all a bloody good read missus. I hope you are very very proud of yourself!
Excellent work!"

Needless to say, I'm delighted.
Unfortunately, one of my 'editors' has had computer problems and isn't able to continue reading and editing Raven for a day or so. Therefore my book is delayed by a week. Fingers crossed, I'll have all notes back in the next few days and Raven will finally be launched at the beginning of next week.

Call me..............Princess!!

1.5.11

A waitress at a Japanese Restaurant made my day last night... as we walked through the door and sat down, she did a bit of a double take as she looked at me. "I thought it was the new Princess Kate" she laughed.
The rest of the evening continued with my friends calling me Princess, Duchess, Kate and Catherine!!
Although I think perhaps the waitress had neglected to put her contact lenses in, it was lovely!
