COVER REVEAL! Elder (Firstborn Trilogy #3) by Raine Thomas

29.11.12

The cover was created by the amazing Devan Edwards of Nimbi Designs.
Blurb
Clara Kate is one of the eight beings needed to activate The Elder Scroll, an ancient artifact causing tragedy and darkness on the Estilorian plane. She knows that her focus needs to be on finding the final piece and stopping the evil Mercesti, but Ini-herit isn't making it easy.
He’s working closely with Clara Kate on the quest to stop their enemies…too close for her comfort. His presence serves as a constant reminder of the love they shared on the human plane, a love that he no longer remembers at all.
Her life and the lives of those she loves are at risk, and she knows she has to put aside her personal problems. So far on their journey, she's endured heartbreak, terror, pain and loss. She’s even been brought to the brink of death.
She thinks things can't get any worse.
She's wrong.

Monday Mortals: Janet Beasley

26.11.12

I'm delighted to have the fabulous author of the Hidden Earth series, Janet Beasley with me today...

Hi Janet! Can you tell us a little about your latest book.

My latest book is more than one - it's a conglomeration of 3! There's the trilogy of Maycly which is Volume 1 in the inspirational epic fantasy Hidden Earth Series, and 2 companion books: a full color illustration book with detailed descriptions of the animals, plants, and dwellings (a great book to read before during or after reading Maycly), and the second companion book is a cookbook that offers menus, recipes, owner histories, tons of pics, illustrations, 2 indexes, and more stemming from the restaurants found in the novel Maycly...and yes, all recipes are fully preparable and edible right here on Earth!

What inspired you to write it?
My inspiration comes from my potpourri of life's happenings - trials, triumphs, and even a hint of love.

Is it part of a series?
Yes. The Hidden Earth Series is actually a 6 novel series. Volume 1 is titled Maycly the Trilogy. Just recently I unleashed the titles to the upcoming 5 volumes that will complete the series. You'll find the titles on my Hidden Earth Series website on the page titled Upcoming Novels.

If your latest book was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
I'd love to see Drew Barrymore play Iona. Not all of these guys are around, but I think Dick Van Dyke - Buddy Ebsen - Red Skelton - or Ray Bolger would fill the shoes of The Man Behind The Dumpster and pull it off in style! When it comes to Wiskee - well, he could play his own part real well. Lucasphair is the perfect role to be filled by Johnny Depp, and Kathy Bates would make an outstanding Marlen. Jimmy Durante would have been great as Charleo, and Mark Addy would bring Artie the much needed charisma he needs.

What made you want to become an author?
My fantastical imagination combined with my compassion to inspire and encourage people of all ages!

Name one of your all-time favorite book covers?
Am I allowed to say my own? Really - I like the cover of Maycly best, out of all the books I hold in my iPad...not just because it is mine, but because our fabulous graphic designer presented me with something entirely different within the genre, and it was love a first site.

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe simply because C.S. Lewis was able to convey Narnia in such a way it seemed very real.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Who? That would be Walt Disney, and my family. What? Tandem kayaking through nature with my hubby, photographing sunsets and wildlife, baking cupcakes, and playing with my dog.

Where is your favorite place to write?
My screened-in porch on a beautiful day - sipping a refreshing glass of iced tea - listening to the sounds of nature, or snuggled up in my writer's den when the weather is not cooperating - with a mug of white hot-chocolate topped with marshmallows - listening to my favorite stations on Pandora - and enjoying my "scrapbooked" walls filled with my nature photos and illustrations from Maycly.

What is your favorite movie that was based on a book?
Lord of the Rings

Who is your favorite author (s) and why?
Steve Hamilton - he writes in such a way it makes me feel as though I am always standing next to his protagonist.
Daniel Carter - he writes excellent action that holds my interest along with my breath wondering what is going to happen next.
Betty Dravis - a talented author in many genres. I laugh, I cry, I get scared out of my wits...so depending on the mood I'm in I know I can always pick up a "Betty Book" and satisfy my craving.
Jean E. Lane - a master at children's books. You've heard of historical fiction, well Jean E. brings you factual sci-fi fiction. Tons of fun, and characters you love to hang with.
Janet Tronstad - amazing talent used to bring charming stories that take you to a place you wish you could live forever.
C.S. Lewis - the master of fantasy and realism, a combination of which I'm quite fond.
J.K. Rowling - funny, I love the HP series for certain, but she is one of my favs simply because of her dedication, determination, and willingness to adapt - improvise - and overcome!
And of course, Walt Disney - does he really need an explanation as to why he's on my favorites list?

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
Everyone mentioned above :)

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I love chocolate - the darker the cocoa the better! And if you throw in chili chocolate I'll be in heaven!

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
The quaint town I live in was once known as the Venice of Lake County - no, we don't have gondolas, but we certainly have the beautiful waterways on which they could journey.

Thank you for visiting, Janet! I loved reading your answers... you certainly have a wonderful joie de vivre!

Sunday Singalong: Neverending Story

25.11.12

I'm really having fun with the Sunday Singalong... I'm browsing Youtube for some of my favourite songs and today certainly comes under that category.
Many of my top songs are from movies that I've loved over the years. And this one I mentioned on Facebook a few weeks ago and I got lots of response. Neverending Story was one of my top movies as a child and the song that went along with it just blew me away every time I listened to it. In fact I just played it and it gave me goose bumps!
So here it is again, Neverending Story by Limahl (a guy I had such a crush on as a kid!)...

#YAIndieCarnival: I'm thankful for you

23.11.12

Hubby and me. A perfect fit :)
This week we're giving thanks and I have much to be thankful for. A hugely supportive husband without whom I wouldn't be able to do what I love: write full time. He is a wonderful man who can do just about anything! The only thing that he isn't terribly good at is the one thing that I am good at it and that's writing! Clearly, we're a perfect fit :)
But I'm not just thankful for him, I'm thankful for you too. You guys and gals who are always there when I need you, when I'm trying to write and perhaps feeling down, I know I can turn to you and someone will be there to give me the encouragement I need. You, my social networking buddies, my blog readers, my author pals... everyone I've met online... you are a totally awesome bunch and I am so incredibly grateful to you. So, THANK YOU!
I've had a wonderful year - I've published two more books (The Lost Soul, Book #3 in The Raven Saga and The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw, Book #1 in The Morgan Sisters series) and received such encouragement and positivity from my readers that I really do feel thankful for so much. I'm incredibly grateful to all those AWESOME people that have bought my books over the past couple of years and to those that have become fans. I love hearing from you and hope that you will continue to enjoy my work over the coming years.
Happy Thanksgiving EVERYBODY!!

Cunning Spammers...

21.11.12

I just received this email and thought I'd share it with you all, just in case it happens to you...

"There is a new and clever credit card scam - be wary of those who come bearing gifts. Please circulate this.
It just happened to friends a week or so ago in Guildford, and it can pretty well now be happening anywhere else in the world.
It works like this:
Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone who said that he was from some outfit called: "Express Couriers" asking if I was going to be home because there was a package for me, and the caller said that the delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour. And sure enough, about an hour later, a delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. I was very surprised since it did not involve any special occasion or holiday, and I certainly didn't expect anything like
it. Intrigued about who would send me such a gift, I inquired as to who the sender is. The deliveryman's reply was, he was only delivering the gift package, but allegedly a card was being sent separately; (the card has never arrived!). There was also a consignment note with the gift.
He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a £3.50 "delivery charge" as proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult, and not just left it on the doorstep to just be stolen or taken by anyone.
This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the company required the payment to be by credit or debit card only so that everything is properly accounted for.
My husband, who, by this time, was standing beside me, pulled his wallet out of his pocket with the credit/debit card, and 'John', the "delivery man", asked my husband to swipe the card on the small mobile card machine which had a small screen and keypad where Frank was also asked to enter the card's PIN and security number. A receipt was printed out and given to us.
To our horrible surprise, between Thursday and the following Monday, £4,000 had been charged/withdrawn from our credit/debit account at various ATM machines, particularly in the London area!
It appeared that somehow the "mobile credit card machine" which the deliveryman carried now had all the info necessary to create a "dummy" card with all our card details, after my husband swiped our card and entered the requested PIN and security number.
Upon finding out the illegal transactions on our card, of course, we immediately notified the bank which issued us the card, and our credit/debit account had been closed.
We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is definitely a scam because several households have been similarly hit.
WARNING:Be wary of accepting any "surprise gift or package", which you neither expected nor personally ordered, especially if it involves any kind of payment as a condition of receiving the gift or package. Also, never accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper identification of who the sender is.
Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction!
Pass this on, it may just prevent someone else from being swindled by these scumbags."

Interview with Fenella Miller whose new book is out today!

21.11.12

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing author Fenella Miller, who launches her latest book, Hannah's War today!

Hi Fenella! Can you tell us a little about your latest book.

My latest book is Hannah’s War.
World War II brings divided loyalties and tough decisions in this page turning drama from Fenella Miller.
Hannah Austen-Bagshaw’s privileged background can’t stop her falling in love with working-class pilot, Jack, but Hannah has a secret. Torn between her duty and her humanity, she is sheltering a young German pilot knowing she risks being arrested as a traitor. Hannah’s worst fears are realised when Jack finds out what she has done and their love begins to unravel.

What inspired you to write it?
I wanted to write about a girl in the land army and a pilot and set it somewhere I could research easily. Debden is only an hour from me and the airfield is still there to drive round.

Is it part of a series?
No – although Barbara’s War, which I published last month, has a second part to come next year.

If your latest book was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
It would have to be a fair haired northerner - Sean bean would have been perfect but he’s too old now. No idea about the female lead.

What made you want to become an author?
I’ve always written and intended to become a published author at some point. I had to wait until I stopped teaching to find the time to complete a book. I have 30 traditionally published titles out as well as several indie-published.

Name one of your all-time favourite book covers?
I love all mine – Jane Dixon-Smith is brilliant. Bernard Cornwall’s covers are always excellent.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
I would chose Jane Austen so that I could ask her about the way she wrote and how many characters were based on real people. Also I would like to have dinner with Charles Dickens because he understood the darker side of London.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer inspired me to write regency romances. Bernard Cornwall’s’ Sharpe books (with Sean bean as the hero) are the inspiration for most of my Regency heroes.

Where is your favourite place to write?
I work at my PC in my study upstairs – however for the past seven weeks I’ve been sitting on my bed using a new lap-top as I’ve broken my ankle. Now the cast has gone I’m back in my study.

Tell us a little about your favourite book...
Dorothy Dunnett’s Francis Lymond series are my favourite books. I re-read them every few years.

What is your favourite film that was based on a book?
There have been several good adaptations of Jane Austen but the best film adaptation is The Game of Thrones - seamless and fantastic. Again the sharpe films are terrific and the Hornblower series as well.

If your favourite book was made into a film, who would you like to play the main characters?
I’d love to see the Lymond books as a film with Rupert Penry-Jones as the lead.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
My mother was the daughter of the Rajah of Tajpur.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
Wivenhoe in 1845 was the centre for yachting. With the advent of the train from London rich middle classes could get down to their yachts easily.

Good luck with Hannah's War, Fenella!

Day 7 of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

19.11.12

Hey everyone! Well, I'm back from my travels in Lisbon to celebrate hubby's 40th birthday... and all is back to normal. Well, relatively back to normal. While we were away, a freak tornado ripped through the region. Fortunately, it missed the area where we live but did some major damage to three towns just 15 minutes away. Lagoa, Silves and Carvoeiro (where we used to live) had huge trees ripped up from pavements, the local football stadium is virtually no more, houses have lost roofs and windows, caravans, cars and trucks overturned and crashed all over the place and more. It must have been so frightening for anyone living there.
Luckily, it's all over and the freak weather conditions have changed. This morning, there's beautiful blue skies everywhere and, although a little brisk, it is glorious.
Just a bummer that I feel like I'm coming down with what feels like flu! I hope it's not though :(
I guess it's a good thing then that my Virtual Tour is online only! So you don't have to worry about catching my cold when you come on over and visit Raine Thomas's blog, where main character Emma Jane Morgan has plenty to say for the Seventh Day!
So what are you waiting for... come and join me and help me feel better!
DAY SEVEN

Day Six of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

18.11.12

It's Sunday... time to chill out and relax (preferably in front of a cozy log burning fire) and catch up with all your favourite TV shows. Sigh... I love Sundays. I'll be busy travelling back from a celebratory weekend in Lisbon though... but I hope to catch up with you all when I get back!
But before all that, come and check out the sixth day of the Virtual Tour where it's not me you'll find, but one of my main protagonists, Lana Beth Morgan who is posting on the awesome YA author Carlyle Labuschagne's blog.

Sunday Singalong: Lisa Stansfield's All Woman

18.11.12

I heard this on the radio the other day and it brought back some wonderful memories of when my husband and I first got together. I can't tell you any more than that though ;)
Suffice to say that this song will forever be etched on my mind for the most delightful reasons! Plus, it was my husband's 40th birthday yesterday so it seemed like an appropriate song to remind him of 21 years ago!
Enjoy... as today I'm playing All Woman by Lisa Stansfield...

Day Five of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

17.11.12

Happy Weekend everybody! Its Saturday (YAY!) and also the fifth day of the Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour. XX It's also my hubby's 40th birthday!! So Happy Birthday, Michael!! XX
I'm delighted to be over at the Books Complete Blog today, talking about the naming process. How I came up with the names of the characters in The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw. So do head on over to find out more!

And now, I've yet another fabulous review (*cue another happy dance*), from Amazon UK:
"This beautifully written story follows sisters Lana Beth and Emma Jane. I love the relationship between them and you can't help but smile when you read about them. They are total opposites yet exactly alike at the same time if you get what I mean. :) Lana, the girly shopaholic and Emma, the giggly goth have made some great new friends and gained some awesome powers. Loved the interesting characters and creative plot that leaves you guessing what will happen next with all the twists and unexpected turns *deep breath* but i feel sorry for Joe.I have read loads of books that start like this but WOW, what a way to take it Suzy!!! There are even more surprises as you dive further into the book. Can't wait to see what happens in the next books. You better hurry up Suzy because lord knows how much longer Emma will be able to wait to see prince charming again :)"

Day Four of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

16.11.12

It's time for yet another awesome review, from Amazon!
"The Morgan sisters Lana and Emma both have paralyzing phobias, until a weird compulsion pushes them into their fear. What happens is transformative, and literally marks them for life (you'll understand when you read it). But add to this that now Em can see and speak to the ghost of Joe, the lovely boy she found washed up on the beach who died in front of her while clinging to her hand.
In a coma, he speaks to her, seeming to wake up, but he doesn't. Eerily this happens again with old man Grimshaw not long after, and he repeats the same strange event. Spooked, the sisters don't know what to do, but Joe the ghost is certainly friendly and fun. And explaining how they suddenly have tattoos to their parents is a hurdle they don't want to jump, especially as they can't explain how it happened.
Then life throws them in the deep end, they're off to London for work experience and instead discover their destiny while losing Josiah (the ghost). This is an epic adventure which I could not stop reading. Literally from page 2 I was in this hook line and sinker. I loved the bad guys, the graveyard antics, the talking dead, the superpowers of the kick-a** ninja chicks, and the rite of initiation the sisters go through.
This book is packed with twists, emotion, adventure, and some cute guys. There's no escaping your destiny, the Morgan sisters find this out the hard way while trying to save Joe, the ghost they feel responsible for. Paranormal adventure has never felt so real and authentic. This could be happening right now and you would accept it because this urban fantasy is that realistic."

Day Three of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

15.11.12

Its Thursday today and you can find me on the Bookish Blog where I'm sharing a very special excerpt from The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw.
In the meantime, here's another AWESOME review of the book by JeanzBookReadNReview Blog:
"So starting with the cover, which I did like prior to reading the book, the scene actually makes even more sense to you once you have read the book. The sisters look as different than chalk and cheese yet we find out later in the book they are closer than they ever thought. I won't give more details as it would give away too much in my opinion.
So basically the book is primarily about the Morgan sisters, Lana and Emma. they were adopted by their now parents when they were just babies. They literally were found on their now parents doorsteps! Upon reaching the age of 16 their lives begin to change... they develop certain "skills" which is quite confusing to them. Around about the same time they are to do work experience and as they live on the rather small island of Andilyse, it is arranged for them to stay with a friend of their fathers in London. Everything begins to be explained upon being introduced to the people at Praxos. Who is Praxos? Well they are a group of supernaturals who fight evil in what ever form it takes. Of course for every group of "good" people there is bad and the "bad" Supernaturals that fight against Praxos are called "The Skulls". The story has action, fighting evil, friendship, love and of course danger! and mystery!
The book is well written and very descriptive to help the reader visualize the places and people being written about. The book is aimed at the 8+ market of readers and I feel that the book fits this age group upwards very well. I would go so far as to say that this book could be the beginnings of a series as good as those by J.K. Rowling! The theme of good fighting evil is there, but this series would be more steeped in history and mythology, which in my opinion makes it even more interesting. The books will cover many supernatural races, which makes for lots to read about. The descriptions and words used in this book are not overly complicated, so would not put off a more novice reader. Yet the plot of the book is interesting enough to hold the attention and curiosity of an older child or more experienced reader.
This book is the type that children should be encouraged to read at school, to interest the children and perhaps influence them to read more.
Even as an adult I enjoyed the book and would love to read more. This book is a great start to a potentially brilliant series. There is so much scope for things to happen, more characters to be introduced as well as learning more about the existing ones. With the introduction of the Praxos Academy there is an unlimited potential for storylines, and relationships to develop. as for the characters we are introduced to in this series I definitely feel that we can learn lots more about the Morgan sisters as well as their fellow Praxos members. I also felt there was more to the whole thing of Luke breaking off his relationship with one of the sisters...
So did I enjoy this book? Yes, it's aimed at the 8+ market and I think it fits perfectly and as an adult would still like to read more of the Morgan Sisters. Would I recommend? Yes, especially to friends whose children are perhaps as not into reading as they could/should be as I think this book would grab a child's imagination and curiosity and encourage them to read more. Do I want to read more in this series? Yes, I will be keeping my eyes open for a Bk#2 Would I read more by Suzy Turner? Yes."

Monday Mortals: Dario Giardi

12.11.12

It's Monday again and today, as part of my Monday Mortals theme, I'm interviewing the Italian author Dario Giardi.
Hi Dario! Can you tell us a little about your latest book.
Adudan is my debut novel. It's an urban fantasy which I think is very innovative and special for the message it contains, but I'll leave you to judge for yourselves. The story comes to life during sleep and in the dreams of Marcel Guivarch, a Breton writer who is able to immerse himself in the memory of an ancestral past. In this land which lies between dreams and reality, the protagonist starts to become fully aware of his true identity and of his mission. Through the visions that a mysterious civilization manages to send him, he traces his life backwards until he discovers that he was Railen, a guardian chosen by princess Adudan, the only sovereign left to rule the planet Atlas after the death of her father. For Marcel, these visions are the first pieces of a story that traces its roots back into time.

What inspired you to write it?
Everything comes in dreams. Adudan comes from my dream journeys. Many call them astral travel. The creative drive always starts with an image. I wake up I take notes on the images that my imagination has produced ... everything comes from them. If there is a strong emotion behind that image do not take it into account. In what I write, there is always a profound message I like to convey and I think that in this sense Adudan it conceals many. This is all my writing is something that goes beyond the pages.

Is it part of a series?
No

If your latest book was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
I love the movie "The Lake House" and its magical and dreamy atmosphere. The Lake House is about possibilities and impossibilities and the decisions we make on our way to finding the right person. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock represent the perfect cast for a Adudan Film Adaptation.

What made you want to become an author?
The childhood experiences influence the will to be a writer.

Name one of your all-time favourite book covers?
Adudan;)

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
Twelve years ago I read an article in the Los Angeles Times in which America's most successful fiction writers were asked to name their top-ten favorite works of 20th Century American fiction. John Fante's "Ask the Dust" was the only title to appear on every author's top-ten list in that article. Since then, I've read "Ask the Dust" twice, as well as every other book by Mr. Fante.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Imagination and life

Where is your favourite place to write?
Near the Sea

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
The Lord of the rings

Who is your favourite author (s) and why?
John Fante for his ability to catapult the player and hit mainly describing the emotions experienced or just think. Sudden strokes on the plot without necessarily explain all or dwell in a thousand descriptions ...

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
John Fante, Ernest Hemingway and Jack London.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I work as a researcher in the fields of environment and energy, although my true passion is writing.I have written the tourist guides Bretagna: natura, arte, poesia e mistero tra oceano e cielo and Roma: misteri ed itinerari insoliti, published by Polaris (www.polaris-ed.it/). Adudan is my debut Novel. I have decided to take a gamble with self-publishing on the Amazon platform. America is the land of opportunity. Self-publishing has made many dreams come true. I'm sure it's a positive sign of changing times and of the direct power that new technologies give readers, bypassing the old, traditional publishing system to give a voice to what for me is the only criterion for publishing success: the public.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
I live in a small city in the Etruscan countryside. 30 miles near Rome.

Sunday Singalong: Alice Cooper's Poison

11.11.12

I would hate to live without music... it helps to calm me, inspire me, gives me energy, brings back touching memories. I just love it. I listen to a huge variety from 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, jazz to country and classical and all that's in between. So today, for Sunday Singalong, I'm listening to a great old 80s rock ballad that has become an absolute classic. Poison by Alice Cooper...

The 'Look' Challenge

10.11.12

I've been tagged in the 'Look Challenge' by my favourite indie author, Shalini Boland!
This challenge is designed to help writers recognize where common words are over-used while showcasing some of your work. 'Look' is one of the most over-used words in writing, along with other favourites such as 'just' and 'suddenly'. The following exercise might help you find and change the offending words, and is a real eye-opener!

For this challenge, here's what you need to do:
Search your manuscript for the word “look” and then copy a couple of the surrounding paragraphs into a post.
Give a little background on the scene if you’d like.
Tag 5 other writers who’re working on, or who’ve completed, a manuscript.
OUT NOW!!!

Half an hour later, a faint groan escaped his lips, making the girls jump.
'Em?'
'He wants you, Em. He just groaned your name,' said Lana with a smirk as she tiptoed to his bed and looked down at the handsome young stranger.
'Grow up, Lana,' she said as she shook her head.
'Em... is that you?' he muttered with his eyes closed.
'Well, come and speak to him then,' Lana demanded.
Reluctantly, Emma stood and walked slowly to his bedside, pushing Lana to one side.
'Erm, it's me. It's Emma,' she whispered.
He held out his hand towards her. Emma's eyes opened wide and she turned to look at her sister who pushed her forward. 'Go on then.'
Inching her hand forward, she gently placed it in his. He squeezed it and opened his eyes. When he saw her he smiled, 'Em, is that you? I knew you'd come back to me.'
'But... but how do you know who I am?' she asked and he smiled.
'I could never forget you. I've been looking for you for so long.'
'You have?' Emma felt her cheeks burn while Lana sniggered behind them.
'Who are you?' she asked. He looked hurt.
'You don't know who I am?'
Emma slowly shook her head and he coughed.
'Please, may I have some water?' he asked with a hoarse voice.
Lana stepped out from behind Emma and filled the small glass from the pitcher that stood on a tray at the end of the bed. She handed it to Emma, who carefully placed the straw to the young man's lips.
'Thank you. Are you sure you don't know who I am?'
Again, she shook her head, 'I'm sorry but I've never seen you before.'
'That's impossible. You're my Em,' he whispered sadly. 'I finally found you after all these years and you don't even know who I am,' he coughed again, wincing in pain.
'Are you in pain?' asked Lana. 'Shall I fetch a nurse?' she said heading for the door.
'I... I... Em?' he wheezed as a coughing fit hit him full force.
'I'm sorry, I don't know what to do,' she panicked, bringing the straw in the glass of water to his lips again but his body began convulsing and so she stepped backwards in shock.
The door opened and a doctor in a white coat, followed by quite a butch nurse rushed in.
'Please wait outside girls,' she commanded.
Lana and Emma did as they were told, watching just before the door closed in their faces.
'What the heck was all that about?' asked Lana.
Emma looked at her sister and burst into tears.
'Em? I'm sure he'll be ok, Sis. Don't worry... he'll be fine,' she said, not quite as reassuringly as she'd hoped.
Pulling her sister away from the room, the two girls found a small sofa just down the corridor opposite a large window that looked across to Carlton Point, the highest point on the island.
Patting the seat next to her, Lana smiled as Emma sat down and leaned her head on her sister's shoulder.

Where are they now: Neverending Story

7.11.12

I was going to just blog about the actress who played the Childlike Empress but figured I ought to research the three main actors from one of my all time favourite movies, Neverending Story. I'll start with that delicate little girl who played the Childlike Empress... a character I so wanted to be back then.
Tami Stronach

Surprisingly, Tami Stronach hasn't had much of an acting career since appearing in the family movie in 1984, because her parents didn't want to run the risk of her ending up like many child stars do. She did, however, release a single around the same time as the movie, which contained two songs, Fairy Queen and Riding on a Rainbow. Although Tami has since studied acting, she has yet to perform anywhere other than with an experimental theatre group. She is now a member of a well known dance group based in New York (http://www.tamistronach.com/tsd/home/). She's still as beautiful as before isn't she?
Barret Oliver
Bastian Bux was played by the young actor, Barret Oliver, who went on to appear in D.A.R.Y.L, Cocoon and Cocoon: The Return, but that's pretty much it as far as acting is concerned. He later joined the Church of Scientology and got married at 19 (and then divorced). He has since become a printer and photographer, apparently. Sorry but I couldn't find any images of what he looks like now!
Noah Hathaway
I want to cry just looking at this!
Boxey, Battestar Galactica.

Now this is the guy I wanted to date when I was a kid. Wasn't he just totally and utterly gorgeous as Atreyu? Sigh. That was by far his most memorable role... ever, right? Well, did you know that he also starred as Boxey in the original Battlestar Galactica series? No? Me neither. Neverending Story made him into a bit of a star, especially in Europe and he went on to appear in a couple of other movies including Casebusters, To Die, To Sleep, neither of which I've ever heard of (must look them up). He has since become seriously into martial arts and motorcycle racing and apparently appeared at a 2011 screening on Neverending Story in Adelaide, Australia! He's also been on tour with WizardWorld Conventions. Fascinating!

Teaser Tuesday: Diary of a Single Parent Abroad

6.11.12

Teaser Tuesday is where I post a teaser from a book I'm either currently reading or from a book I love. This week, it just happens to be both as I'm reading a fabulous book by Jill Pennington, entitled Diary of a Single Parent Abroad...
Description
When Jill and her family moved to Italy she expected life to change but she had no idea how massive that change would be. Shortly after the move, she discovered her husband had been having an affair and had no intentions of staying in Italy.
Despite being in a foreign country with no income, limited language skills, a house that needed rebuilding and three young children to care for, she never once considered returning to the UK. With strength and determination she accepted any challenge, dismantling a derelict house to ground level, digging out a three metre deep well with her hands to get free water and overcoming her fear of the chainsaw to cut the winter wood. When there was very little money for food she made risotto with nettles collected from the roadside. She overcame many problems, learned new skills and discovered that money is not important, the only things in life that matter are health, happiness and her children.
Jill's story is delivered with an ever present hint of humour because, as she says, 'Without laughter life wouldn't be funny'.

Kindle Teaser
It's a fantastic book that I highly recommend. You can get your copy here.

Monday Mortals: Melissa Pearl

5.11.12

Monday Mortals is my brand new theme for interviews, guest posts and anything to do with other people, whether they're authors, designers, singers, etc! Today I have the pleasure to be interviewing the awesome YA author Melissa Pearl who releases her brand new novel, today!!
Hey Melissa! Can you tell us a little about your latest book.
My latest book, Betwixt (YA Paranormal) released on Nov 5th. I have had this story in my head for a very long time, so it's great to finally be able to share it with the world :)
Betwixt is the story of a very popular, wild-child, Nicole, who gets hit by a car and left for dead. It doesn't take her long to figure out that she is actually caught between life and death and as her spirit floats around town trying to find someone who can hear her, she starts to find out what her friends really think about her. Ironically the only person who can hear her is the guy she publicly humiliated at school, Dale Finnigan.
Desperate, she has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince him to find her before the person who hit her with their car comes to finish off the job.
WOW, Melissa that sounds awesome!

What inspired you to write it?
I saw a movie called, Invisible, and loved the premise, but was disappointed with the execution. I couldn't stop thinking about it though and a story of my own was born. Over the years it developed into something completely new and different from the movie. I fell in love with the two main characters and just had to start writing it.

Is it part of a series?
No - this is my first stand alone novel. It's been quite nice just writing a one-off :)

If Betwixt was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Photo credit: Gage Skidmore via photopin cc
Photo credit: canmark via photopin cc
I always find this question hard, because sometimes you can't think of an actor that truly encapsulates the characters in your head, but the closest I've found is Mila Kunis (above) for Nicole and Penn Badgley (above) for Dale.

What made you want to become an author?
My friend told me to, actually. I have always had stories floating around in my brain and one day my best friend asked me to write one down so that she could read it. I started and fell in love with writing.

Name one of your all-time favourite book covers?
Oooo - that's a tough one. I LOVE book covers!! I have a few that pop into my head straight away though - The Iron Witch (left) by Karen Mahoney. There's something so stunning about it... and I also love the covers for the Halo series by Alexandra Adornetto. And as I'm typing this more and more covers are coming to mind, so I'll stop there :)

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
The Mark of the Lion Series by Francine Rivers was like that for me. I have read them multiple times now, and every time I am touched by the growth and stories of the characters. You know those books you read that make you want to be a better person because one of the characters is so inspiring? Well - those three books are like that for me :)

Who, or what, inspires you?
I get inspired by so many different things - songs, movies, concepts - I love asking myself a "what if" question and answering it by writing a book. Anything that makes me want to laugh, cry and fall in love is inspirational to me. I am also a Christian and I find my maker extremely inspiring :)

Where is your favourite place to write?
I do most of my writing at my desk, which is currently in our living room. Not the best set up, but the only place it will fit. I have poems, verses, story ideas and pictures plastered up all over the walls around my desk and I love glancing up at them as I work.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Again - there are so many. Um - the first two that pop into my head are The Notebook and Shawshank Redemption (this was based on a novella by Stephen King called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption).

Who is your favourite author (s) and why?
I have a few different authors for a few different reasons - Francine Rivers, because she makes me think about my life, Dee Henderson because her books are impossible to put down and Simone Elkeles, because she writes teenage love in a very raw and real way.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
Good question!!
EE Cummings - because his poem, I Carry Your Heart With Me is so incredibly beautiful and I want to ask him about it
Robert Frost - because I love his poetry
Francine Rivers - because I'd love to get inside her head and find out how she comes up with such amazing, inspirational stuff
John the apostle - he wrote a few books in the bible. He hung out with Jesus and I'd love to hear what that was like.
Stephen King - because I think he is a very talented man and I could learn so much from him

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I love nutella. Seriously love it. It's scary. I could finish a jar in a night, I'm sure... and then add marshmallows into the mix... bliss!!!
LOL... Melissa you do make me laugh!!

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
I live in Suzhou Industrial Park, which is in China. I've only been hear 12 weeks so it's still very new. Probably something that is super interesting and that I would never see back home is the amount of stuff they can fit onto an e-bike (battery powered bicycle) I've seen everything from a queen sized mattress to a chest of drawers!!)
China? WOW!!

Find Melissa...

Today, my favourite song is.... Born To Die by Lana del Rey...

EXPAT EXPERIENCES Guest post by Jill Pennington

3.11.12

Recently I met the most amazing fellow Yorkshire lass online. Her name is Jill Pennington and she is a single mum living in Italy with her three children. She has quite a story to tell... in fact she has written a book about her experiences, entitled The Diary of a Single Parent Abroad. I was so impressed by her tale that I asked her to write a guest post. So, here it is... over to you Jill!
Suzy
On my return to Italy from the UK, the lovely people who work for Ryanair decided my bag was far too big to fit on their plane and told me I would have to pay a £40 fee. I had only £12.50 in cash and a substantial supply of Cadburys chocolate, which I was not prepared to negotiate with. Weighed in at 9.8 kilos (the case not the Cadburys) so was within my weight limit but apparently too bulky.
After the initial panic, I started emptying my luggage, inhaling bars of chocolate and stuffing my lovely new M&S smalls in my already overstuffed pockets. Resembling something across between a scarecrow and a Michelin man as I added extra cardigans and jumpers. I was by now, sweating like a fat lass, in the 30 degrees heat of a normal British summer.
But I would not be beaten, and eventually made it to the plane tightly clutching my last few quid. Then me and everybody else on the flight repacked our cases and wondered what the flip that was all about.
I survived the flight and walked to Pisa train station with my heavy bag, managed to catch the right train and got off at right stop. I had the biggest fattest smile on my face as I danced down the road to my car. I just love coming home. I put my key in the ignition - Nothing, niente! So back up hill I wearily trudged to train station, no longer dancing or smiling.
Saturday is the local mechanics day off, but the man at the bar with one leg and a stick told me he had some jump leads. So he hobbled down to my car along with my other new best friend and we attached the leads. Unfortunately the Selotape that held the leads together was a little less sticky than it had been when it was first attached 25 years earlier, so we roped in a couple more pensioners and tried to push/jump it instead - still nothing.
At this point my very own collection of Tuscan pensioners decided that it wasn't the battery at all and it must have an empty petrol tank. I calmly explained in my 'fluent' Italian that the dashboard lights were not fuelled by petrol and as they were not functioning that it must in fact be the battery. So impressed that a mere female could know such a thing, they re-grouped and produced another set of jump leads. A glimmer of hope... but no the Fiat Panda on offer was reluctant to share. Just as the assembled pensioners had started the head scratching routine (that’s when you know things are really bad) a 'proper' car pulled up and attached his bumper to mine. (Not much damage!) Within minutes I had a live engine, and wanted to be on my way but Johnny one-leg thought I might want to give him a lift home. Bumper Humper saw my look of desperation and rescued me a second time, so I was off up the mountain and down the other side for a pizza and a glass of 'Pinot Grigio'
