If you're an author wanting to publish independently, then I would highly recommend using Smashwords to help distribute your ebooks. Not only do they give you the opportunity to publish to a wide variety of websites including Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Sony, Diesel, Page Foundry, etc but they also make it easy to gift ebooks (or offer promotions) by giving you the opportunity to create coupons.
Mark Coker, the guy who started Smashwords, has published a number of very useful ebooks for self publishers including a formatting guide and The Secrets to Epublishing Success (both of which are free) and are must reads for new authors.
Over the past couple of years, I've found Smashwords to be one of the most useful sites for my career and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next. The only downside to using Smashwords is that they pay royalties quarterly, but that's certainly not a huge issue. They pay via paypal which is certainly easy these days.
You could also use Smashwords to publish on the Amazon and Kobo sites but I decided to opt out and do it myself, because it seemed simple enough. I haven't seen a huge amount of sales via Kobo, unlike Amazon, where I sell rather a lot these days (YAY!).
Don't forget to download your FREE copy of my book, Daisy Madigan's Paradise here and your FREE copy of Raven here.

Love hearing that you're selling lots of books! I think indie publishing is awesome. As an ugly capitalist, I love seeing people earn money like literary entrepreneurs.
