YA Storytellers: Villain Takeover Day

28.2.14

I'm so excited today to be a part of the YA Storytellers' Villain Takeover day. YAY!! I'm delighted (and slightly scared) to have one of Liz Long's villains taking over the blog! Check it out.....

My name is Dr. Felix J. Hardy and I’m one of the world’s greatest scientists. I’m a human, but there’s no doubting my brain is nearly that of a Learner (a particular brand of gifted being who, you know, can learn a lot). In fact, I’d be willing to bet I’m smarter than most Learners when it comes to the science of DNA.
You probably haven’t heard of me because I’ve spent my entire life’s work inside a lab, working for a bunch of gifted jerks who think they’re better than everyone else. But I showed them when I managed to make myself gifted. Sure, it was by accident, but now I’m on the brink of something incredible. Not only will I be able to give humans the opportunity to become gifted, but I’m going to…no, you know what, I can’t risk telling you. I can’t tell anyone. If I tell you, you’ll figure out a way to do it yourself and I can’t have that. Even worse, you’d run and tell him.
Sheffield Donovan is not just the ringmaster of his show, the Donovan Circus. He’s dangerous, a bully that could ruin everything for me. I’m man enough to admit he’s the one person who could stop me. His gift is undeniably good; I wish I could get my syringe in him to get a blood sample. With his gift, I’d be unstoppable. Alas, I can’t endanger my plan now, not when I’m so close. He’s busy right now anyway, especially now that the girl’s arrived. He’s waited years for this. Then again, so have I.
Lucy Sullivan. The last piece of my puzzle. She will change everything for me. She will change everything for the gifted world. I’ve poked and prodded every gifted being in my path, but she will be my crowning achievement. She doesn’t even realize how truly powerful she is, but I’ll make her see. At least long enough to understand before I take her gift for my own and become the most powerful gifted this world’s ever seen. Then I’ll link the human and gifted world and lead us into a new era. Not even Sheffield or his precious Firestarter will be able to stop me.
It’s time to put my plan into action. Tomorrow, the first death will set everything in motion. Lucy’s gift of fire will be mine and I will have everything I’ve worked so hard for. Tomorrow is the beginning of the end for the gifted world and its secrets.

MINE TO SPELL Description:

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.
For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

About the author:
Amazon bestselling author Janeal Falor lives in Utah with her husband and three children. In her non-writing time she teaches her kids to make silly faces, cooks whatever strikes her fancy, and attempts to cultivate a garden even when half the things she plants die. Check out The Mackenzie Duncan series by Adrianne James!

26.2.14

The Tempering

The Mythology department at prestigious Harvard University is tiny—and Mackenzie Duncan has just been selected as one of the lucky few. Her love for myths and legends is deep, but she never thought any of it could be real.
After being attacked by a large wolf while walking home alone, Mackenzie realizes something is not right. She heals quickly, has suddenly become super strong, and is experiencing mood swings that can't possibly be normal. The myths she's studying aren't myths at all. Werewolves are real, and she's one of them. Fear of what she is, and who she might hurt sends Mackenzie running from the life she’s worked hard to build–and straight into the arms of a handsome Were named Geoff and into the home of his pack. Living with her new pack takes the edge off her confusion and self-loathing, but the arrival of new pack members changes the dynamic, and tests Geoff and Mackenzie’s growing relationship.
The hardest part of being a werewolf is to have no control and no memory of her time as a bloodthirsty beast. When a moon cycle passes, and she is actually able to remember bits and pieces of the night, she starts to ask questions, and the more questions she asks, the more she realizes she doesn’t like the answers. Can she set aside her own sense of morals to belong to a pack that is like a family or will she leave everything behind yet again in search of a life she can be proud of?

The Enlightening

Mackenzie Duncan found out that pack life wasn’t for her. Now she is running for the second time in the six months since she was bitten and turned into a Werewolf. But this time, she isn’t alone. This time, she has Geoff and Liam with her, two very hot Werewolves vying for her heart.
But her companions aren't her focus. The only thing she can focus on is getting far from her old pack and their murderous ways. Only, she doesn’t just want to run. She wants to warn every pack she can that their lives are in danger too. No one should be turned against their will like she was and no other pack should have to surrender to the ideas of a centuries old, power hungry woman.
Not only does Mackenzie have to deal with her crazy ex-pack leader sending people out to kill her, she has to keep both men at arm’s length (and that proves to be much more difficult than she thought), but she finds out more about her own life and heritage than she ever thought imaginable.
And suddenly, everything makes sense...

About Adrianne James

Growing up, Adrianne couldn’t get her hands on enough books to satisfy her need for the make believe. If she finished a novel and didn’t have a new one ready and waiting for her, she began to create her own tales of magic and wonder. Now, as an adult, books still make up majority of her free time, and now her tales get written down to be shared with the world.
During the day, Adrianne uses her camera to capture life’s stories for clients of all ages and at night, after her two children are tucked in bed; she devotes herself to her written work. Adrianne is living the life she always wanted, surrounded by art and beauty, the written word and a loving family.
As a young adult and new adult author, Adrianne James has plans to bring stories of growing characters, a little romance, and perhaps a little magic and mythology down the line for her readers to enjoy.

DELIVER ME by Kate Jarvik Birch, coming April 15th from Bloomsbury Spark.

One People. One Union. One Future.
Wynne’s entire life is dictated by the Union: the clothes she wears, the books she reads, even the genes she inherited. And like every other girl in the Union, Wynne dreams of being chosen as a Carrier on her 16th birthday—one of the elite selected to carry the future generation within her womb. Wynne and her best friend Odessa are certain they will both make the cut, but when Odessa is chosen and whisked off to a life of privilege, Wynne is left behind to work as an assistant, delivering babies for the Union.
As Odessa slips deeper and deeper into the role of Carrier, Wynne begins to see the Union for what it really is: a society that criminalizes the notion of love, and forbids words like mother and family.
For the first time in her life, Wynne is faced with a choice: submit to the will of the Union, or find a way to escape and save Odessa before she is lost forever.

Review: The Polaris Uprising by Jennifer Ibarra

22.2.14

The Polaris Uprising by Jennifer Ibarra
(Polaris #1)
Publication date: October 30th 2013
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

Synopsis:
In less than seven years, eighteen-year-old Ryla Jensen will succeed her father as the president of Neress, a nation where all citizens are cared for from the moment they’re born. Fed, sheltered, even educated—every need of theirs is met.
The only price they pay is their free will.
Groomed since childhood to take on a role she’s not even sure she wants, Ryla’s only escape from the pressures of duty is her sister, Alanna. But when her eyes are opened to the oppressive regime her father built, she begins to question everything she’s set to inherit—and finds herself at odds with her sister’s blind allegiance to their father.
Torn between loyalty to her family and the fight for freedom, Ryla must decide just how far she’s willing to go to make a stand and risk losing the person she loves most in the world: Alanna.

My Review
Firstly I should say that although I really enjoyed this book, I wouldn't really put it in the YA category. More NA really (although there is no sex!). One of the main reasons is because I found it difficult to believe the main character, Ryla, was only 18. Yes, she's the daughter of the president and all that (clearly has an older head on her shoulders) but she just didn't act like an 18 year old at all. That was one of my few irks. The other is that I found it a little slow to begin with. The majority of the story was based upon Ryla and her sister, Alanna's relationship. It was only at the end of the book that I realised the importance of this - it was like an 'aha' moment as I approached the ending.
I must say I was taken by surprise with the turn of events. Initially I was hoping that everything would be summed up nicely but then with the advent of certain events (I won't give the game away!), I realised The Polaris Uprising has the potential to be a fantastic series, and boy would it make an awesome movie - Hollywood, are you listening?
All in all, a very interesting and thoroughly entertaining read!

Cover Reveal: Keeper by Ingrid Seymour

20.2.14

I'm excited to reveal the cover for Keeper by Ingrid Seymour.  This YA fantasy is releasing as a serial novel with the following release dates:
 vol 1 - March 05
 vol 2 - April 2
 vol 3 - May 7
 vol 4 - June 4
and the Omnibus edition with all volumes releases in July.
This is the cover of the omnibus that contains all the stories that comes out in July.

About the Book:
Greg Papilio both wants and dreads his impending metamorphosis. He’s tired of being a runt—always picked last on the basketball court—and tired of being ugly, like a caterpillar, when he could be what girls call “drop dead gorgeous.” But as much as he looks forward to the transformation, he also fears the caste it will inevitably assign to him. He doesn’t want a common caste, or one that will obliterate his freewill and make him a slave. He wants a powerful one, a cool one.

Samantha Gibson is average. She’s short and a little full around the hips—a terribly cute look for a future chef. À-la-Rachael-Ray in her old days. She’s two years away from culinary school, from her uncaring parents, and from carving a perfectly Human future. She wants independence, a career and a quiet life of her own.

Except fate couldn’t care less about what Greg and Samantha want and gives them exactly the opposite. Greg’s metamorphosis assigns him a caste that enslaves him to Samantha, while her chance to attend Le Cordon Bleu is taken away when her parents get a divorce. And fate’s cruelty doesn’t stop there. Not content with shattering their dreams, it also makes them fall in love, just to tear them apart when Samantha morphs, losing her freewill and developing a compulsion for a guy she barely knows.

Still, these misfortunes are just the tip of the iceberg, because Greg’s fate is to protect Samantha at a time when someone wants her dead. He is her Keeper and will stop at nothing to ensure her safety, even if her secret past proves deadly, even if she belongs to someone else.

AUTHOR BIO:
Ingrid Seymour loves, loves, loves to write. She's a young and new adult author. She writes in a variety of
genres including romance, urban fantasy, paranormal and horror. She loves pizza and sushi, Sunkist and gum. She believes in vampires, witches, but not zombies (uh-uh, never!) She writes to loud music, daydreams constantly and spends too much time in twitter!! Find her there? ;) Ingrid has incredible fun doing what she does, but more than anything she enjoys hearing from her readers. It's a dream come true.

Change of Heart by Shari Maurer

1.2.14

Excerpt:
If I had known “normal” could disappear so quickly, would I have appreciated it more? Would I have been less afraid to raise my hand in class? Would I have let my mother’s complaints roll off my back?
Looking back to how it was before everything changed, I think I’d have done things differently. I’d have stopped to enjoy the smell of the cut grass on the soccer field—and been nicer to my brothers. I’d have eaten that hot fudge sundae, even when I felt kind of fat.
But it’s easy to analyze this stuff when you have the perspective I do now.
I think when you’re sixteen, you believe you’re invincible. Or immortal. Maybe it’s both?
When the most stressful thing in your life is winning a soccer game or what to wear to school, you take some really basic things for granted.
Like the love of your parents.
Or hanging with your friends.
Or the beating of your heart . . .

It even looks like Sam Hunter, a totally cute baseball player, might be interested in her. And then she gets a virus. No biggy, right? Until the virus goes to her heart and weakens it so much that, without a transplant, Emmi will die. Will Emmi get a heart in time? Is Sam too good to be true? What about her new friend Abe, who has also had a transplant and guides her through these scary times — is he just being supportive or is there more going on between them? And will Emmi realize it before it’s too late?

The Author
Shari Maurer did her undergraduate work at Duke University, studying English and Film and Video. In graduate school at NYU, she realizedunnamed that while her Dramatic Writing classmates were all writing serious plays, movies or sitcoms, she kept drifting toward “After School Specials” and she decided to do her internship at the Children’s Television Workshop. She wound up staying there for six years, working on Sesame Street productions around the world.
After her daughter was born with a heart defect, Shari got together with a friend to write The Parents’ Guide to Children’s Congenital Heart Defects which was published by Random House’s Three River Press and named one of Booklist’s “Top Health Books of 2001.”
Shari segued into teen fiction with her novel, Change of Heart, about a 16 year old soccer player who needs a heart transplant. Both of these books were made easier to write because Shari’s husband, Mat, who she met in summer camp when they were 17, is a cardiologist.
In addition to writing young adult novels, Shari spent two years as the “Moms Talk” columnist at the New City Patch, an on-line local newspaper. She got her inspiration for the column, as well as for her books, from her three teenagers, Lissie, Josh and Eric and started the newest chapter in her life when she became the mom of a college student.
