Excerpt
I limped through the hallway, careful not to walk too fast because jerky movements made me dizzy. The longer I walked, the better I felt. Sure, it drained my energy but at least it cheered me up.
Then I stopped dead in my tracks and my jaw dropped to the floor.
The red-haired girl from the accident stood at the end of the hallway staring right at me, her green eyes boring into mine. She motioned for me to come closer. Then she turned around and started walking away.
I followed her as fast as I could, forgetting all about my broken body and bruises. I half-stumbled, half-tumbled through the hallway and went around the corner to the corridor she’d disappeared into.
She stood near a door at the end of this next hallway, tapping her foot on the ground and glancing at her watch. She rolled her eyes when she saw me and then vanished into the room.
My heart stopped beating and my stomach twisted, and this time around it wasn’t from the hospital food. The girl had literally vanished through the door without opening it. Like a ghost.
You're hallucinating, Riley. People don’t just walk through doors. Ghosts aren’t real.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
“The Soul Thief” is the first book in a brand new YA series, “The Angel of Death Series”. It follows Riley, a sixteen-year-old girl who wakes up one day at the scene of an accident and watches as a strange girl steals a young boy’s soul.
When Riley wakes up at the hospital later on, she runs into the girl again, who tells her Riley is a Halfling Angel of Death. Now Riley must come to terms with her new reality, figure out her new powers, and deal with her new mentor, a Guardian named Leander. But when girls Riley’s age start dying in mysterious circumstances, she must find out what’s happening, and fast, before she’s the next victim.

What inspired you to write it?
Riley. The main character. She’s been haunting my mind for ages, coming up with all sorts of new adventures, and new characters to join her in her series of books. She’s quite persistent.
This book started with the main character, then I got the idea for the other characters, and only then, the plot popped up. Usually it’s the other way around, so that’s quite strange.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?

My cover artist and I came up with it together. I wanted something that would catch people’s attention. The cover had to show, Riley, of course, but I also wanted to show to everyone that she’s an Angel of Death – hence the black angel wings, and the skulls on the floor. Then the cover also shows the portal to the afterlife, another indicator she’s an angel of death.
This is my favorite cover to date. I absolutely love it.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?

Tough question. I would like Taylor Momsen as Riley. She’s the first actress who comes to mind who looks kind of like Riley does.
I’d like Toby Regbo to play Leander. Caitlin Stasey could play Katie, one of Riley’s best friends. Her other friends, Michelle and Craig, could be played by Claire Holt and Zach Roerig.

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
I’ve always liked reading about the paranormal. The YA genre has boomed in the last few years, and I find it more interesting to read and write about young adults than about adults, for some reason. Maybe that’s because at age twenty-four, I don’t really consider myself an adult just yet.

What made you want to become an author?
I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember. When I was seven years old, I finished my first “book” featuring witches, vampires, and just about any paranormal creature you can think of. The dream to become an author haunted me ever since.

How do you come up with character names?
The characters tend to name themselves. When Riley popped up in my mind, she already had a name. The author characters did too. Sometimes I do struggle with a name, and then I keep changing it until it sounds right. When it’s right, I’ll know it.

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
The Harry Potter series, especially “Goblet of Fire”, my favorite book in the entire series.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Everything. Another book. A movie. A newspaper article. A person I ran into on the train. Every aspect of life inspires me.

Where is your favourite place to write?
I can write just about anywhere, but my favourite place would be on the train. With no internet connection, I’m not as easily distracted. Sometimes I write 5000 words on my way back and to university (a two hour train ride).

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Vampire Academy. I loved those books, and the movie managed to stay true to the humoristic side of the book. Often movies lose some of the magic the book has, but I felt like that wasn’t the case here.

Name two of your favourite authors.
Cassandra Clare (especially the Infernal Devices series) and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?

Poe. No doubt in my mind. I’d love to sit down and have a chat with the master of the macabre. I want to know where he got his inspiration from, and how he died – it’s a mystery up to this day whether it was foul play or an illness.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I like playing World of Warcraft. Well, you asked for random. World of Warcraft is a massive multiplayer online game, where you can choose a class, like a warlock, paladin, shaman, druid, and so on, and then play with others. I’ve been playing it for five years or so, and I love it. It’s slightly addictive.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Image of Candice Accola by Gage Skidmore
If they made a movie about my life, I’d like Candice Accola to play the role of yours truly. We have the same hair color and she’s a great actress.

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
I live in Belgium. We have waffles and beer, and French fries are originally from Belgium. So they should actually be called Belgian fries. We also have chocolate.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
It’s NaNoWriMo, and I want to finish my latest new adult paranormal romance, “Ghostslayer”. Then I hope to find the right publisher for it.
I have two chapter books releasing on December 1st, “The Clumsy Magician” and “Grave Error”.
Then I’d also like to finish editing another YA paranormal, tentatively titled “Allegro Academy”, and find a good home for it. I’m also working on the sequel to “The Soul Thief”, “Demonic Pact”, which will hopefully release in 2015.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
I have so many items on my bucket list it’s hard to pick just one. I’d like to travel the worlds, so I’ll go for that one.

Favourite myth / fairytale?
The myth about Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table has always been one of my favorites, especially after I read “Mists of Avalon”.

Who did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. I was about eight-nine, if I remember well, when the series first aired, and I loved it. Buffy soon became my favorite person, and a role model.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Eyes of the Enemy is the first book of the BlackMyst Trilogy. We are introduced to twelve-year-old Beynn Firehand who lives in a remote village with his father within the giant BlackMyst Forest, which blankets the kingdom. When his village is attacked by a band of Sorak, the neighboring white-eyed people from the east, his father helps him to escape in order to find help. With his best friend in tow, Beynn undertakes an adventure of magic and peril.

What inspired you to write it?
My son and I read together every night. At one point, we were between books and I decided that I would write a little something that I thought he’d like. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I’d written a trilogy. Go figure.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
The dark forest of BlackMyst is a major backdrop throughout the books, almost its own character, and I wanted to see it on the cover. Adding the ominous figure of a Sorak ties directly to the story and relates the mysterious feel of the books.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
I have to go with a young Asa Butterfield, (Hugo, Enders Game) simply because I think he’s a great actor and I’m unfamiliar with very many other child actors. However, Asa is now 17 and likely too old to pull off a twelve-year-old. I mean he’s good, but…

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
I grew up reading Science Fiction and Fantasy, so I naturally gravitated to those genres. Anything is possible in these genres, through technology in Scifi, and through magic in Fantasy.

What made you want to become an author?
I’ve always loved writing short stories but I never really thought about becoming an author until I finished writing my first book.

How do you come up with character names?

I really just start putting letters together until I find something I like. My main character, Beynn, is an anagram of my son’s name. (Hint: “ _____ and the Jets”)

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
Ender’s Game. I first read it when I was about fifteen and I’ve reread it a hundred times since.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Other writers. All writers. When someone can fuel my emotions and fill me with awe just by arranging words on a page in a certain order, it makes me want to do the same.

Where is your favourite place to write?
Honestly I haven’t written in too many other places than our boxy little office at home. It’s quiet and boring and leaves me free from distraction.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?

The Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies based on one of my all-time favorite books.

Name two of your favourite authors.
David Eddings, whose Belgariad series hooked me on fantasy forever.
Ben Bova whose science fiction kept my head in the stars.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
Jules Verne, Mark Twain, and William Shakespeare. Because how crazy would that be!!?

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
My left side was affected after a brain aneurysm in 2008, so my entire BlackMyst Trilogy was typed with my right hand.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
photo credit: vagueonthehow via photopin cc
Josh Radnor (pictured), Noah Wiley, or Zach Braff

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
I live in Vacaville, California, which is midway between San Francisco and Sacramento along Interstate 80. Although it continues to grow and grow, there’s still a small town vibe that I like. For years, our most notorious resident was Charles Manson, who lived at CMF, our hometown prison.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I definitely will write more books. I’ve yet to decide what age range or genre, but the ideas are in there.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.

I want to visit New Zealand. Looks so beautiful.

Favourite myth / fairytale?
Hansel and Gretel – I guess it’s the dark forest bit. And I’ve always been fond of Robin Hood. Again- dark forest.

Who did you want to be when you were a kid?Olivia Newton-John was my first crush as a kid and I wanted to be Danny from Grease.

Kelly Hess grew up with a love of reading science fiction and fantasy that inspired him to write his own fantasy trilogy. He lives in Vacaville, California with his wife and son, and is putting the final details on the last two books of his BlackMyst Trilogy: The Green Dagger and The Third Power.

Have you ever wondered where fairytales go once they're created?

It's been eight years since Story Sparks last had a dream. Now they're back, tormenting her as nightmares she can't remember upon waking. The black waters of Lake Sandeen, where her Uncle Peter disappeared decades before, may hold the secret to Story's hidden memories, or a truth she'd rather not know. On a bright summer afternoon, Story and her two best friends, Elliott and Adam, take a hike to the lake, where they dive into the cool water and never reemerge. What they find is beyond anything they've ever imagined could be possible, a world where dangers lurk in the form of Big Bad Wolves, living Nightmares and meddlesome witches and gods.

Now Story must remember who she really is and somehow stop two worlds from ultimate annihilation, all while trying not to be too
distracted by the inexplicable pull she feels toward a certain dark-eyed traveler who seems to have secrets of his own. The fates of the worlds are counting on her.

 Spirit Warriors The Scarring
 Blurb:
“One of us would finally end what had been started by the machayiwiw so many years ago. I would have to kill him. It was just that simple. I never thought I would want to kill anybody or anything, but maybe I never had anything worth killing for before.”
-Emmeline Rima Belrose, The Scarring (Spirit Warriors, Book 2)
In the majestic beauty of a Montana summer, Emme and her friends celebrate her near-drowning survival and their defeat of the powerful evil spirit, the machayiwiw. But even as they rejoice, things are amiss. Emme watches helplessly as her family divides, and her friends struggle to hold their relationship together. Worse yet, the love-of-her life, Charlie, announces that he will move back to the reservation, without Emme. Different nightmares take over and Emme realizes she must fight and kill—or watch those she loves be killed. Friends from the reservation reach out to Emme and show her what evil can steal from her. Emme believes that evil can never break her bond with the Spirit Warriors or the love she shares with Charlie. Or can it?
Although this is the second book in the Spirit Warriors series, it can be read as a stand alone novel.

An Interview with Author D.E.L. Connor
What was your favorite book growing up?
When I was old enough to read it was the Little House on the Prairie series. I must have read and reread each of them a hundred times. I honestly thought I was Laura Ingalls Wilder. Most girls my age were into dolls and while I liked dolls and playing house, my version of playing house always had a log house and a covered wagon. They are still my favorite books to read to children. Can't you just picture yourself on a hot summer day bouncing along in the back of the covered wagon?
Who is your favorite author (living or dead)?
I have more than one. Obviously I love Laura Ingalls Wilder, but I am also a huge fan of Larry McMurray. I grew up admiring strong women writers like Margaret Mitchell and Harper Lee and more recently J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyers.
What inspired you to write the Spirit Warriors series?
Actually is has been a long time coming. I wrote the short story that the Spirt Warriors evolved from in college may years ago. The professor asked me to stay after class and he told me how good it was, but unfortunately, it was too dark to be a children's story. I put it away and went on with my career as a nurse. Finally J.K Rowling and Stephenie Meyers came out with new dark tales and the young adult market was born. The time was finally right! I finished Book 1 in two weeks. The struggle to get it published took more time, but here I am with two books in the story completed.
What character do you most identify with in Spirit Warriors: The Scarring?
Probably Lilly, I tend to be kind to a fault, and love my friends and family unconditionally. I think as a child I wished I could have been more like Bets and Emme. They are headstrong, brave and willing to fight for anything or anyone they cared about. I was shy when I was young, although no one believes that today! LOL
Can you tell us about your next project?
Why of course. I am about half way through book 3 in the series The Burning. There will be 6 books total in the series. Book 4 will be The Lamenting, Book 5 The Ensouling and then a Prequel to be named later. In between those books or after them I'm not sure which, I plan to write a new adult romance novel about loss and finding the chance to love again.
