Losing the Ice by Jennifer Comeaux

20.3.15

Series: Ice #2
Release date: February 23rd 2015
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Courtney and Josh are in love and excited to finally compete as skating partners. When they take the ice for their first competition, they want to show everyone, especially Josh's family, they are the perfect pair.
But ice is slippery, and one misstep puts all their dreams in jeopardy. Now they must show each other both their love and their partnership are strong enough to survive.

How much of your life experiences are in your writing?
I travel to a lot of figure skating events, so I’ve used those experiences quite a bit for my books. It’s been so helpful to have actually been in the cities and stadiums where the competitions in my books take place. It makes visualizing the events much easier!

Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I received a comment from a reader (and aspiring writer) recently that said she wanted to model her romance writing after mine, and that was the greatest compliment I could receive!

Tell us about your book.
LOSING THE ICE picks up Courtney and Josh’s story right before their first time competing together as a team. They have such high hopes, but then they encounter some unexpected challenges that throw everything into upheaval. They find themselves frustrated with both their on-ice and off-ice relationships, and they have to rely on the strong bond between them to pull themselves through.

What do you have planned with your writing in the near future?
Right now I’m working on the third and final book in the Ice series, TAKING THE ICE. It will also be a novella and will wrap up Courtney and Josh’s story. I’m hoping to publish it in early autumn. After that, I plan to start working on another skating romance centered around Liza, one of the secondary characters from both the Edge and Ice series.

What is your favorite type of hero and heroine?
My favorite type of hero is a sweet, funny, and caring guy who’s passionate with the heroine but not overbearing or arrogant in any way. I like heroes that show some vulnerability. My favorite type of heroine is a strong woman who’s not afraid to fight for her dreams or the people she loves.

What are your hero and heroine of the story like?
Courtney is a strong young woman who’s experienced disappointment but hasn’t let it stop her from dreaming. She’s not afraid to speak her mind, and she loves passionately and with her whole heart. Josh is the definition of a sweetheart. He’s a quiet guy, but he’s not shy about showing Courtney how much he adores her. He is also incredibly talented both athletically and musically.

Jennifer Comeaux is a tax accountant by day, writer by night. There aren’t any ice rinks near her home in south Louisiana, but she’s a die-hard figure skating fan and loves to write stories of romance set in the world of competitive skating.
One of her favorite pastimes is traveling to competitions, where she can experience all the glitz and drama that inspire her writing. Jennifer loves to hear from readers!

Cheating Time by T.R. Graves

4.12.14

Series: Longevity #1
Release date: December 1st 2014

Synopsis via Goodreads
Carles "Carlie" Enoche's world is one that can barely be imagined. In it, babies have micropharmeceutical devices inserted in their hearts within hours of birth. The MicroPharm implant holds code that secretly counts down until the date of that baby's death (as determined by its genetic analysis) and contains drugs that are released in such a way that chemicals and hormones are in perfect balance at all times, making illness almost unheard of.
Theoretically, the known but unexposed date of the babies' deaths and the maintenance drugs geared toward giving the baby a long life have benign consequences. It is the unknown and unbelievable and unexpected way President John Barone gathers data about every child and the way he releases contraceptives from the device in order to control the population and terminate pregnancies when embryos are identified as weak or mutated that makes the device and its technology as dangerous as any malignancy.
For President Barone, seventeen-year-old Carlie isn’t just a MicroPharm first generation; she is the great-granddaughter of the man who discovered the ability to determine life expectancy down to the day and the daughter of the woman who invented the MicroPharm chip. Carlie and her family are important to President Barone's political career and the plans he has of creating a nation of strong, healthy, and superior people, who give more to their country than they take.
Jayden St. Romaine, one of the Facet's most loyal Surrogate Soldiers, is ordered by President Barone himself to find the Enoche family and kidnap Carlie. Through blackmail, he plans to leverage control over the Enoche's scientific research and the ability to develop even more tools that can be used to genetically engineer a superior race.
When President Barone sends Jayden on his mission, he never expected his perfect soldier to develop a conscience… betray his trust… fall in love with Carlie, but he's dispatched a backup Surrogate Soldier just in case. With the ticking of the clock and the second Surrogate chasing them, Jayden's chances at redemption and Carlie's chances of living a life where she is free to make choices about her life and her body are in jeopardy.

Author Interview
Hi. T.R! Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Cheating Time (Longevity, #1) is based in the future and tells the tale of a girl whose family is well known for their inventions. For example, her grandfather identified a technique that allows him to know - down to the day - how long a baby will live within minutes of their birth. Following his example, her mother invented an implant that can be inserted into your heart. The implant is especially important because it becomes the mechanism by which one's body can maintain a perfect stasis, one that prevents illness and/or emotional imbalances.

What inspired you to write it?
As a nurse, I'm always interested in what we could do better to maintain optimal health. The implant whereby our bodies are constantly/consistently getting exactly what it needs seems ideal... and it is until you think of all the ways disingenuous people could use it against you, turning something that has the power for good into something straight out of a nightmare.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
I was looking at clocks and watches, hoping something would hit me as perfect for the cover of this book. When I found this picture, I sent it to my beta-reader and asked if he liked it. He didn't message me back as I'd done him. Instead, he called and told me that the picture was perfect... that there would never be a better picture for the cover of this book. Because I respect his opinion and I agreed with him, I jumped into action and began the work needed to turn the simple picture into a book cover.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Carles Enoche would be played by Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones. Jayden St. Romaine would be played by The Maze Runner's Dylan O'Brien.

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?

I'm committed to a world where the story drives the genre. This story felt young adult from the instant I began creating it. After finishing the book and never once feeling like there were parts that couldn't be told or conversations that felt off, I knew I'd been right. I go out of my way to make sure that a book's genre is one that allows me to stay true to the story. If there is no reason for sex or cursing, I try to make sure I don't throw it in just for the shock factor or to be gratuitous. It's more important that the world be true to the story and the words/actions be true to the characters.

What made you want to become an author?

I began writing so that I could preserve my father's and mother-in-law's personalities after they died. I wanted my children to know more about them than just anecdotal stories and to be able to conjure up their characteristics in a way that made them feel like they knew them as well as I did. I made sure to create characters that exemplified who they were, what they believed in, and embodied their tiniest quirks. To me, that was important because I didn't want to forget the oddities that made them special. I wanted to always remember the characteristics that made them unique, special, and lovable.

How do you come up with character names?
I love to look at baby name websites and pick names based on the definitions provided. Periodically, I'll have a character that can't have a normal name. In that case, I'll create the name myself.

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
I have so... so... so... many (including your series, Morgan Sisters) that it's almost impossible to answer this questions. I can tell you that I'm obsessed with Colleen Hoover right now. So much so that Ugly Love might be my favorite book I've read this year.
:) <3

Who, or what, inspires you?
The stories that spin like a tornado through my mind - searching for a way out - are what inspire me to write. I couldn't NOT tell these stories if I wanted to they are so determined to make their way out and onto my computer screen.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I find the ocean inspiring. Fortunately, I live close enough to the Gulf of Mexico that I can spend the day on the beach anytime I like.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
I loved Ever After: A Cinderella Story starring Drew Barrymore.
I ADORE that movie took :)

Name two of your favourite authors.
Again, it is quite nearly impossible for me to answer this question. There are so many amazing authors in the world, and I love their books for different reasons. Here's what I know to be true. There are traditionally published, nameless/faceless authors who are writing earth-shattering books, and for every one of them I'm grateful. Then, there are amazing indie authors - like you - who are not only writing earth shattering books but making themselves available to their fans... giving them what they want (more of themselves)... and writing books based off the fans' feedback. The ones who humbly make themselves available to their fans are my favourite authors.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
I know this will sound all kinds of crazy, but I'd have a dinner party with J. D. Salinger. I'm kind of obsessed with the story of The Catcher in the Ryeright now. In fact, it's inspired me to write Chasing the Dragon (Lost Innocence, #1) for this month's NaNoWriMo.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
While I love to spin a good yarn, I am a nurse first and foremost, one committed to a world where people get the care they need without regard for their ability to pay.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
I think that Julia Roberts could reprise her role as Erin Brokovich and do a good job at representing me. Please know that I am in no way suggesting that I look like Julia. I'm simply suggesting that I have a tendency to see a wrong that needs to be righted and dig my heels in. Since Julia's already proven she can be that person, I have every confidence that she could do the same with my life.

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
I live near Galveston Island and would spend every waking moment on its beaches if I could.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
Right now, I'm focusing on NaNoWriMo 2014. Like I said earlier, I'm writing Chasing the Dragon (Lost Innocence, #1) for it. After that, I plan to finish Dark Angels of the Cross (Warrior, #4). Then, I'll begin There (Still Standing, #2).

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
Like I said earlier, I want to live on the beach. I want to wake every morning, sit on my deck, and watch the sun as it makes it way up from the horizon. I can't imagine anything better than having that as my morning view.

Favourite myth / fairytale?
I love the story of Alice in Wonderland. There is just something amazing about the rabbit hole and the adventure down into it.

Who/What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be either Wonder Woman (can't wait for the 2017 movie) or the Bionic Woman.

The Last Changeling by Chelsea Pitcher

11.11.14

Series: Faerie Revolutions #1
Release date: November 8th 2014
Publisher: Flux
Purchase: Amazon
Synopsis via Goodreads:

A Kingdom at War . . .
Elora, the young princess of the Dark Faeries, plans to overthrow her tyrannical mother, the Dark Queen, and bring equality to faeriekind. All she has to do is convince her mother’s loathed enemy, the Bright Queen, to join her cause. But the Bright Queen demands an offering first: a human boy who is a “young leader of men.”
A Dark Princess In Disguise . . .
To steal a mortal, Elora must become a mortal—at least, by all appearances. And infiltrating a high school is surprisingly easy. When Elora meets Taylor, the seventeen-year-old who’s plotting to overthrow a ruthless bully, she thinks she’s found her offering . . . until she starts to fall in love.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book, The Last Changeling?
The Last Changeling is the story of a faerie princess who falls for a human, but there are a few pretty big problems with that. First of all, she’s a faerie of the Dark Court, where humans are seen as vile and destructive abominations of nature. Secondly, she’s the daughter of the Unseelie Queen, and there’s not much time for romance when you’re plotting to take down your mother’s court. Lastly, she’s only in the human world because she’s searching for an offering to cement her alliance with the Seelie Queen . . . a human offering.

What inspired you to write it?
I wanted to write a love story where the characters didn’t get lost in each other and forget about the world. Instead, their feelings for each other only strengthen their convictions to fight injustices in both of their worlds.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
My brilliant editor found the photo, taken by the amazing photographer Marwane Pallas. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted it for my cover. And our wonderful cover designer, Kevin Brown, picked the perfect font and added those beautiful, swirling details. I couldn’t be happier with it!

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
This is actually a difficult question, because we writers always get such a strong image in our minds of what our characters look like. I think for Elora, someone like Holland Roden from Teen Wolf could fit really well. She gets this wonderful wild look in her eyes, and in this photo, she has Elora’s fiery hair.
As for Taylor, this one was a bit trickier, but I can see flashes of him in Taylor Hanson (I know, not an actor. But still…)
And also a bit of Charlie Hunnam during his days on Undeclared.
But neither of these is quite right, so I’m going to open this up to the readers: who do you think could play Taylor perfectly (and is also maybe a bit more current)? I’d love to hear your ideas!

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
I’ve always loved the idea that magical beings exist in the real world, just outside of most people’s view. Urban fantasy is perfect for that—you get to operate within the real world, and draw supernatural elements in, showing everything that’s hiding beneath the surface.

What made you want to become an author?
I’ve been writing ever since I was a little girl. So at a certain point, wanting to share my work with the world just made sense.

How do you come up with character names?
I’ve always loved the name Taylor. When I was a kid, I had a little stuffed wolf (another thing I love: wolves) and I named him Taylor. As for Elora, it’s probably an odd thing to name the princess of the Dark Court after the light . . . but I had my reasons. ;)

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
I absolutely loved Marion Zimmer Bradley’s THE MISTS OF AVALON. Arthurian legend is one of my favorite things, especially the women’s stories, so that book was perfect for me.

Who, or what, inspires you?
Anyone who speaks their mind and stands up for what’s right, even when it’s scary. Some examples would be Libba Bray, Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Poehler, Tori Amos, and Ellen Oh. I love amazing women who share their brilliance with the world!

Where is your favourite place to write?
I love to write at the park, if I can find a quiet, sunny spot. It’s really peaceful, and I love being out in nature.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
I think the Lord of the Rings movies were done really well. Also, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. That was my favorite HP book (besides The Half Blood Prince), and the movie was done so fabulously!
Name two of your favourite authors.
AdriAnne Strickland and Justina Ireland.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
Honestly, I’d love to have dinner with the living authors who inspired me: Francesca Lia Block, Holly Black and Libba Bray. I grew up reading their books, and I’d love to get together in some old Victorian house and go searching for faeries and ghosts!

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I’ve been a vegetarian for sixteen years!

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Kristen Bell. She’s not nearly as tall as me, but she’s sweet, she’s snarky, she cares about a lot of the things I care about, and she’s a fabulous actress. I love her!

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
We have lots of bookstores and lots of trees.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
Right now I’m working on a contemporary YA murder mystery!

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
Visit the ruins in Greece. And I’ll probably spend lots of time in the ocean there, too.
Favourite myth / fairytale?
I love stories about Morgan le Fay, King Arthur’s sister.

Who/What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Mariah Carey. Ha! I really did. She had such a strong, fabulous voice, and I wanted to have a singing career. Unfortunately, I could never hit that high note.

Thanks so much for having me!
It was an absolute pleasure, Chelsea!

My Review
Although it took me a while to get into the story because I kept finding myself somewhat confused in the first half, I did enjoy this book. I was particularly impressed by the issues that it tackled througout (abuse, drugs, death, homosexuality, bullying, etc) and the way the author tackled them. Each subject was handled in a way that wasn't obvious, yet most teens will probably find them easily identifiable and may even learn something from them.
What was also really good about this book was the way the author combined the real world with that of the faerie realms – esecially towards the end. I'm a huge of fan of urban fantasy and when it's done particularly well, I do like to high-five the author (!).
But it's the confusion at the beginning that disappointed me a little. I can't even put my finger on why I was so confused – perhaps its the way Elora became Lora. Or the accident and the girl dying at the start and how she happened to find her way to Taylor. And why would Taylor just bring a stranger into his home. I don't know. Perhaps it was just me but there was something I can't quite put my finger on. Having said that, I enjoyed the way the author writes and the ending really had me on the edge of my seat. I'm very curious to see what book two has to offer!

Frances Hopkins, who lived across the street from the DeCoudreauxes, stood in the doorway of the library with heaving shoulders and some kind of internalized grudge against every one of us. Her low growl reverberated, and none of us moved a millimeter as we debated the next move. Frances seemed to be calculating her next move as well, and I couldn’t help but hear Old West showdown music in my head.

“Shoot. Her.” Alexandria gritted her teeth.

“She isn’t doing anything,” Miles argued.

“Let’s just try and skirt past her,” I suggested. It couldn’t have been too difficult; she wasn’t taking up too much room in the rather large doorway.

An argument from Alexandria later and we found ourselves trying to walk past Frances without alerting her. Since it was my idea, Alexandria insisted I go first. I took Lucy’s hand and held her close to me, starting to side-step Frances while holding my breath. I covered Lucy’s eyes with one hand, her mouth with the other; she was starting to cry, and I didn’t want her to get too loud.

I tried to think of everything I possibly could aside from the situation right in front of me. It would only take about five seconds to get past her, I knew, but they would be appallingly long seconds. My grip on Lucy tightened once we found ourselves inches from Frances. I scooted as quickly as I could and was relieved that we made it out into the hallway without incident.

Summer, O and the others followed suit, each without incident, until only Alexandria remained inside the library. She locked eyes with me and I contemplated leaving her behind, given how rude she’d been to Aylen. Instead, I gave her my most reassuring smile and nod, gesturing for her to join us. Miles whispered a few words of encouragement as well, and after a few false starts, Alexandria made her move to shimmy past Frances.

She hugged the wall, her back to Frances and eyes shut tightly. Her spiked heels made the faintest scritching sounds as she shuffled. My sigh of relief at all of us passing by Frances unharmed was interrupted, as Frances whipped around with alarming speed to once again grab hold of Alexandria’s hair.

Before any of us could get close enough, Alexandria was heels over head and slammed against the ground, Frances on top of her and shredding her clothes. There was no way Miles could’ve gotten in a clear shot, both women’s limbs intertwining as Alexandria tried to fight her way out. Miles screamed to me, gesturing for me to kick while he aimed. I looked back to Frances and hesitated before steeling myself and slamming my foot as hard as I could into her face.

Confessions of a Teenage Rape Survivor by Holly Dae

13.10.14

I just had to help share this book with the world...

22754329Release date: October 16th 2014
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | IBooks | Kobo

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Before she was raped, almost sixteen-year-old Allison Sommer knew exactly what she wanted and was in total control of her life. Get through high school, go to college to appease her dad, somehow stay fit, lithe, and athletic through all the stress and become a professional cheerleader. Normal teenage stuff. Simple. At least it was simple before she was raped.

Now Allison's whole life is out of her control. She can't trust in her own choices, can't rationalize anything anymore, so she just goes through the motions, hoping that eventually she'll go back to normal, can stop pretending. That doesn't happen, especially when she's forced to reveal what happened to her family and closest friends.

On the MTV commercials and reality shows that emphasize that she has nothing to be ashamed of and guide viewers to some website like don't-be-a-victim.comand a support hotline, no one warns her that the aftermath is more difficult than the rape itself, that her family's efforts to be supportive make her feel more alone and confused.

And being raped has more devastating consequences than Allison ever imagined, forcing her to make one of the most difficult decisions she's ever had to make. It should be a no-brainer, everyone says, but being raped makes Allison question everything and everyone she thought she could trust.

Either way, Allison won't let anyone force her to do anything again, not like her rapists did, even if it makes her already difficult enough circumstance more difficult. Uncensored and unflinchingly honest, these are the confessions of a teenage rape survivor.

"Are those your brother's sleeping pills?" Gene asked.
Allison nodded. No use denying that.
Gene looked at her again, then at the pills, and then at Allison again. His eyes widened.
"Were you going to take all of those?" Gene asked in an incredulous tone. He didn't wait for an answer, already having assumed the worst. "How many have you taken already?"
Allison opened her mouth to reply, forgetting that one of the pills was sitting under her tongue. Gene saw it as she started to try to explain.
"Oh shit! Spit that out!"
Gene reached across the counter to squeeze her cheeks and force the pill out her mouth causing Allison to have two instantaneous reactions. First, she spit out the pill. Second, she punched Gene straight in the jaw, which caused Gene to let go of her and grab his face.
"What the—"
Allison gasped as she shook her hand out. She shouldn't have done that. She didn't mean to do that. Gene wasn't a rapist. Well, she hoped he wasn't. The guy who asked her for directions to distract her didn't look like a rapist either. Either way when Gene grabbed her so suddenly, she couldn't help it.
"I'm sorry," she said quickly.
"Are you insane? What is wrong with you?"
"I didn't mean to punch you. It was an accident. I swear."
Gene rolled his eyes, stilling rubbing his jaw. "Not the punch. I probably deserved that for scaring the hell out of you, grabbing you like that. I'm talking about those sleeping pills. That many of those things at once can kill you."
Allison blinked. He thought…
"I wasn't trying to commit suicide!"
"Could have fooled me," Gene said sliding the pills off the counter and into his hand. He threw them down the garbage disposer.
"But I wasn't," Allison said, heart racing in panic. If Gene thought she was trying to kill herself, he'd tell her brother, and her brother would tell their dad, and she'd never be left alone, and she'd have to tell the truth. Then they'd make a big deal out of it and want her to report it to the police, and the police would want a description and account of what happened, and then she'd never be able to forget. "I just wasn't thinking."
"The hell you weren't," Gene snapped as he snatched the bottle with the remaining pills off the counter and put them in his pocket.
"I was just so tired and the bottle said one pill was mild and good for four hours of sleep, so I decided to take enough to knock me out for a day," Allison tried to explain.
"Six pills would have knocked you out all right," Gene said as he began to dial a number into his phone.
"What are you doing?" she asked apprehensively.
"Calling your brother," Gene said and then cursed. "Damn it. I have his phone in my pocket. Do I have your dad's number in my phone?"
Allison lunged for the phone. In all likelihood, he probably didn't have her dad's number, but she didn't want to chance it.
"You can't call tell them," Allison said grabbing onto the phone.
Gene tried to pull it out her grasp as he said, "Sure. Not telling your brother and father that you're suicidal is a great idea."
"I'm not suicidal."
"Says the girl who was about to take six sleeping pills," Gene said getting the phone out of Allison's grip and holding it out of her reach.
Allison all but tackled him into the counter.
"I told you!" Allison screamed, exploding in anger. "I'm tired! I just wanted to go to sleep without the nightmares! You can't… You can't tell them," Allison finished, all her anger dissolving as a sob escaped her throat. She hadn't even noticed she started crying.
She stopped trying to get the phone then, falling onto the floor as her body shook with sobs of fear at what Gene would do and anger at herself. When did she get so weak?

About the Author
Holly Dae is a recent college grad with a B.A. in English who, instead of putting on a suit to work at a desk 9-5 for five figures and a lifetime of misery and crushed dreams, decided to write YA novels about the taboos concerning contemporary issues like rape, abortion, drugs, teen pregnancy, and sometimes sex with the hopes that someone will pat her on the back and say she touched their life.

Following Zippy by C.B. Burdette

6.10.14

Release date: July 2014
Publisher: Flower Child Publishing
Purchase: Amazon
Synopsis via Goodreads

At fifteen most kids only have to worry about their homework or the style of their shoes. Gabe Perkins isn't most kids. When diagnosed with a terminal illness, he begins to make friends with a girl so ethereal, he starts to question his own sanity.

Can you tell us a little about Following Zippy?
A teenage boy finds himself in the spider webs of teen angst and a brain tumor. While dealing with his brain tumor he befriends a girl who claims to be an angel. No one else has met her, but he’s not sure as to whether or not she’s real or a hallucination caused by his cancer. Zippy helps him on a path greater than one he would’ve thought to have walked.

What inspired you to write it?
One day I was thinking about another book I was pre-planning and felt burdened to write about this story. It was almost as if I didn’t even have a choice to write it, it was just a matter of sitting down to write it. I guess you could say a little angel forced me to write.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
I’ve always enjoyed the clouds. There’s something about the simplicity about looking upwards, away from this world and into another. I was searching through some of my graphic designer’s work and came across this cover and fell in love. Fortunately for me and Zippy, this one hadn’t yet been bought.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Anyone unknown. Of course I’d want someone with experience, but wouldn’t want anyone who would give viewers a predisposition about what they’d expect of the film. I’d want viewers to see someone who allowed the character to come through fully without having been a well known actor in another film.

What is it about writing for children/teens that appeals to you so much?
I think it’s the most important time of our life. Even though many of us are still at a vulnerable state, when writing for teens there is always that notion of writing for an audience that can be persuaded. I believe that sometimes rather than writing full on raunchiness, I think writing something enlightening can help teens move through a stressful time in life and really think about what’s on the opposite side of the fountain of youth.

What made you want to become an author?
I’m not really sure, honestly. I was propelled to write this book for reasons on a level higher than my own knowing, so that in turn has made me an author.

How do you come up with character names?
I actually reached for biblical names. Given the nature of the books I really wanted to relay a message within a message. Zippy was short for Zipporah which means “Beauty, trumpet, mourning, bird”, given the way Zippy finds and guides Gabe, I thought this name was perfection. Gabe is of course short for Gabriel which means ‘champion of God.’ It’s somewhat of a metaphor for the walk Gabe leads in the beginning, through to the ending of the book.

Name one of your all-time favorite books?
Please…please, I beg you don’t make me choose just one. I adore Where The Crow Flies and I just adore anything by C.S. Lewis…or Gillian Flynn ;)

Who, or what, inspires you?
Something that show’s light in a usually dark place. Most of my inspiration comes from love in unlikely places.

Where is your favorite place to write?
On the couch, with a cup of coffee (very) close nearby.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Ok….call me a silly goose. But I do happen to love the Hunger Games books. While I think the books are way more descriptive and phenomenal, I think that the movies are just as delicious.

Name two of your favourite authors.
Alright, well, I’ll stick to one modern and one classic. I mentioned C.S. Lewis and Gillian Flynn in a previous question and I can’t help but make them my ‘favs’

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I’ve been a vegetarian for 9 years….no cheats….

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
photo credit: TedsBlog via photopin cc
I’d say Scarlett Johansson…but then again who wouldn’t want her to play them in a movie about their life?

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
Some people call it ‘HotLanta’, however I don’t think I’ve ever heard any locals actually call it that….

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I’m currently working on some children’s books as well as a three part first person trilogy, in the point of view of three different characters.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
Unfortunately I’ve never written up a bucket list. I suppose it’s time to write one up. I would love to go to Africa though and put in safe water pumps to give people clean drinking water.

Favourite myth / fairytale?
The tooth fairy. How amazing is it, that something that falls out of your mouth can earn yourself money?

Who/What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a veterinarian. Unfortunately vets have to put down animals and I just don’t think that is something I could ever do.

Excerpt:
“Look at those fish,” she said, diverting her attention towards the creek. “What about them?” “They’re just swimming along. Living and breathing. I wonder,” she said as she nudged her shoulder against mine, “if they know what purpose they serve.” “Well, they probably don’t.” “Why’s that?” “Because, they’re fish?” “Don’t think so low of the marine species.” “Zippy, they’re little minnows. They’re so little they probably only live a few months. Why worry about their place in life?” “I don’t know. Something of the simplicity of them is nice, though, you must admit.” She gleamed ear to ear, “Imagine, if you were a little minnow, swimming down the creek.” “Oh, crap.” “What?” “Do you really think there’s something out there that really cares about those little fish? Or even, you know, if something out there is looking down at us, talking about us like we’re little fish? As if we’re just tiny little minnows swimming down a stream, unsure of what fate lies ahead of us?” “I do.”

I grew up a gypsy at my parents hands. With a dad in the Air Force, I got to experience life on the road, soaking up culture. After spending 6 years working as a model, I realized that the industry wasn't much of what I was looking for in life. More often than not I felt like Jo Stockton in Funny Face and escaped into the world of film, where your job is based on something more than beauty. Though I do love 12 hour days on set, there's nothing like snuggling up with a warm laptop and letting my fingers dance away to create a whole new world.

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Protecting Romero High from all things supernaturally spooky as Dia Muerto is a tough gig for sixteen-year-old Dia Summers, but it’s nothing compared to protecting the ones she loves from real, live—well, formerly alive—zombies. Unlike the zombies that shambled around on set, the real deal don’t follow a script.

At the majorly important birthday party of her boss’ daughter, Dia experiences a series of potentially career-ruining social disasters. Before the night is over, she soon discovers that the possible cancellation of her show isn’t her biggest worry.

Armed with what they can find around Bixby Studios, Dia and her friends band together to find out why everyone they know has begun popping up as gray-skinned, black-eyed, limb-nomming zombies. With the ailment spreading, time is running out before Dia is swept up in Hollywood’s latest trend.

Blaze, the studio’s dealer in residence that everyone knew about except me, turned out to be Blake, the makeup artist. Brendan led the way to his regular hangout. We found him in the alley between buildings Eleven and Twelve taking a drag from a cigarette, his bright blue hair shining in the sunlight. The cigarette dropped from his lip, landing on the ground. He stamped out its glow with the toe of his boot and ran his hands over the thighs of his too tight skinny jeans then through his hair before approaching us.

“What can I do for you?” he asked.

Before anyone could question Blake about Z, Brendan lunged at him, grabbing him by his t-shirt and pushing him against the wall.

“Tell us about the drugs, punk!” Brendan yelled, lifting him a couple inches off the ground.

“Put me down, bro!” Blake shouted.

Brendan let go, and Blake fell to the ground.

“What the hell, dude?” he asked, regaining his footing. “What was that all about?”

“Sorry, dude. I’m reading for a role as a loose cannon rookie in a cop drama tomorrow so I figured I’d get some practice.”

“Not cool.” Blake adjusted his shirt and frowned. “What do you want?”

“We’re here to see what you know about these.” I pulled Mason’s baggie out of my satchel.

“Did you have a bad experience? I have a no refund policy. Your bad high is your problem, not mine.” Blake folded his arms across his chest.

“Bad experience?” I asked.

“I’ve been…uh…handling these for months and haven’t had any problems until recently. People have been calling and saying their friends have been freaking out on them. I’ve told them that’s it’s probably stress—acting is hard—but they believe it’s a bad batch of Z. I’ve been taking this stuff for a while now and I never had any problems. In fact, I took a couple this morning and I’m fin—“ Blake was interrupted by a pretty nasty coughing fit.

The three of us took a step back.

“Dude, are you okay?” Brendan asked from a three-step distance.

“I-I—I’m c-c-cool.” Blake coughed. “I hope I’m not coming down with something.” He cleared his throat.

“Can I see the pills?” he asked.

I handed them over to him from a distance. He inspected the baggie and opened it. He picked out a pill, pinching it between his thumb and index finger for a moment before popping it into his mouth. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.

“See. Fine!” His smiled faltered as he grimaced. “Wait.” He hunched forward, holding his stomach and coughed up a torrent of black liquid just like the mess that had come out of Amber.

Blake hit the ground and started to convulse wildly.

A sense of dread washed over me. “Guys, I think we better go.”

“He needs help.” Brendan pointed at Blake’s shaking body.

“Yeah, and someone else can get it for him,” Reagan chimed in.

I nodded in agreement. “I think we’d better head back to Props, make sure Taylor’s okay, wait for help to arrive, and head home.”

I needed to call my mom and ask her to come pick me up. I pulled out my phone, turned it on ready to dial when Reagan interrupted me.

“I need to check on BB. I need to see if she’s all right,” her voice wavered as she started off to find her sister.

“Reagan! Wait!” I called after her. She didn’t stop. I turned to Brendan. “I’m gonna go with her.” I slipped my phone back in my bag.

“I’m gonna go check on the others and see if help has arrived. Maybe they can help him too.” He pointed down at Blake who’d stopped shaking. “Do you think I should try to bring him inside?”

“No. When help comes, just show them where he is.”

My gut told me it would probably be best to leave him there for now.

Brendan nodded and I hurried to catch up with Reagan.

I knew I wasn’t her first choice for company but it seemed like she went out of her way to prove her point. I practically had to run to keep up with her as she led the way to the office building. It stood at the center of the studio, a few stories taller than the other buildings. Its facade was made of reflective glass windows instead of bland beige siding like the rest. I followed her up the pathway leading to the building and through the doors. She breezed right past the receptionist in the lobby and unlike everyone else that entered, she didn’t have to sign in or have an appointment. I sped up and followed her to the elevator. She pressed a button and suddenly we were heading to the building’s top floor.

We stepped out of the elevator at the end of a long hallway I’d never been in before.

“Hurry up,” Reagan called. She was already out of the elevator. “BB should be in there.” She pointed at one of the three doors on the hall.

I hurried to join her.

“BB, where are you, bitch?” Reagan called as she opened the door and stepped inside the darkened room.

No bitches made their whereabouts known.

I hesitated at the entrance, a little afraid to follow Reagan inside. Not only was the room dark, it was quiet. Too quiet. Reagan had disappeared farther into room. Other than the little light that filtered into the room from the hallway, I could barely see past my nose.

“Reagan?” I took another step inside.

She didn’t answer.

I took a few steps back toward the safety of the light.

“Come on, Dia. I know this place is giving you the creeps but you can do this,” I whispered, trying to psych myself up to step into the room again.

“Maybe this will help.” I flipped the switch on the wall, expecting a light to turn on. Nothing happened. I tried again. Still no light.

“Reagan!” I called louder. She still didn’t answer.

Something isn’t right.

I stepped further inside.

A light flickered on in another room spilling into the room I was in. It definitely had BB Bixby flair—tons of purple and white one-of-a-kind furniture and decor plus lots with shiny, sparkly things. Heavy purple drapes covered the windows, blocking sunlight. Looking up, I saw why the light didn’t work. Wires snaked out of a hole in the ceiling and the chandelier they were once connected to was in pieces on the white carpet. Joining the broken light was a knocked over table, a broken vase, and a dozen trampled lilies.

Reagan had to be in the other room. There was nowhere else she could’ve gone. My stomach clenched as I slowly approached the doorway, stopping just outside.

A thud from the other room made me jump.

I took a step and hesitated.

“Come on, you’re Dia Muerto. You can do this,” I muttered.

Fearless Dia Muerto would’ve headed into the next room without a second thought. She lacked the ability to think things through—you know, being a zombie and all. Dia Summers, on the other hand, was well aware of the creepiness in the air, and I wasn’t one for barging into unknown territory without at least some of the facts. I held my breath as I walked toward the doorway and peeked my head inside. Reagan rushed past me, her hand cupped over her mouth, a terrified look in her eyes. She nearly knocked me down as she ran out into the hall.

A low ominous moan came from the room Reagan fled. My stomach dropped to my feet.

I turned on heel and ran from the room as quickly as Reagan did. I didn’t want to know what was responsible for the sound, and I wasn’t going to stick around to find out. Reagan frantically beat on the door at the end of the hall, crying for her dad to open up.

Dread crept over me as I watched Reagan jiggle the doorknob with one hand and pound the door with the other as she screamed for Mr. Bixby. The door didn’t open. Something was wrong. Whatever was in the other room had frightened her to tears. I turned around, ready to run back to the elevator when I saw what had caused Reagan to run.

Her sister, BB Bixby, stood between the elevator and me in a shimmery silver mini dress. She limped toward us, covered in splatters of red, one foot in a strappy silver sandal and the other foot bare. Her hands were tipped in red liquid, one clutching a lock of hair. Red rimmed her mouth like a gruesome lipstick. It streaked across her cheek toward her hairline where a chunk of pink matter settled on a wisp of dark hair while the rest was a wild tangle. Her skin had gone gray and she had the same blue rash as Amber. She cocked her head to the side, setting black eyes on me. She bared black-stained teeth and let out a low growl.

BB didn’t look like any heiress I knew. She didn’t look like an actress either. She looked like a monster. Like something from Dia of the Dead but way more terrifying. I gasped, covering my mouth and took a step back. I knew what I was looking at. The realization made my blood run cold. I’d watched dozens of movies about them as research for my role. It didn’t dawn on me earlier but now, looking at BB, it clicked. The walk. The moans. The stench. The appetite for flesh. Barbara Bush Bixby was a zombie with blood stained hands and a walk that put Dia Muerto’s to shame.
