Restless Earth and Blessing Sky by Emily Mah is a YA/NA high fantasy series.  This is book 1 and 2 of The Sky Chariots Saga. The tour runs July 20 - 31 with reviews, author interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.

RestlessEarth
For over a thousand years, the Tanoa have relied on their Earth Shamen to bring rich harvests, temper stone tools and weapons, and imbue pottery with strength like metal. Now, though, the bloodline has dwindled to one Shaman, Tuwa, who is trapped high in the mountains, holding bedrock together to prevent a volcanic eruption while the rest of her people flee to safety. The only way to save the village is for her to sacrifice herself and buy them the time they need to evacuate. But her grandson, Ahote, refuses to abandon her to die. Rather than do as she asks—marry and bear daughters who might inherit her gift—he sets out to find the one person who might be able to save Tuwa’s life.Kasha is a Tanoa girl in who lives in Solace, a city of the pale-skinned Andalanos. If the Engineers Guild ever discovers her gender or race, they could order her execution—for in violation of the King’s law, Master Engineer Seamus trained Kasha as his apprentice. She is a genius in all things mechanical and earned her master certification when only fourteen years old. Since Seamus’s death, she has been discreetly working his job as the City Engineer. She knows there is no machine or technology that can save Tuwa. In order to complete this task, Kasha must invent a vehicle unlike anything the world has ever seen, and risk exposure and death in the process.
Blessing SkyBlessingSky
Master Engineer Kasha lives in hiding. As a Tanoa and a woman, she has no legal right to her title, and risks expulsion or even execution if the Guild discovers her identity. For over a year she has served as the City Engineer of the Andalano city of Solace, home to the Winged Riders and their pegasus mounts. Now, though, her people need her. The last of their Earth Shamen is trapped in the mountains, holding back a volcanic eruption so that the rest of her people can escape. It is a job for only the greatest of all engineers, and that happens to be Kasha. But when her kinsman, Ahote, breaks the most sacred law of the Winged Riders, an alliance with him means certain death. Kasha must work alone to solve the most difficult engineering problem of all time before the summer months are done and winter comes to claim the life of the Shaman and the hope of her people.
Excerpt
Kasha had begun her illegal studies with the City Engineer when she was six years old, after wandering into his shop off Market Street, pulling apart one of his simple, shiny metal clocks, and putting it back together again. The thing had only three gears and a winding key and spring, easy enough to understand once she had a glimpse inside.
When a shadow had fallen across her, she’d looked up, expecting chastisement, but instead, she had seen a kindly, old Andalano with wispy, gray hair and shining eyes.
“Is it put back together correctly?” he had asked.
“Yes. I didn’t break it.”
“Wind it. Let me hear it tick.”
She obliged him. The ticks echoed hollowly against the clock’s metal walls.
He shut his eyes a moment then smiled. “What is your name?”
“Kasha.”
“Ah… You are a girl?”
Her face grew warm with shame. Just because both Tanoa boys and girls had long hair didn’t mean she looked like a boy, did it? “Yes.”
“And Tanoa?”
“Yes.”
“I see.”
She put the clock back on the shelf, and it was strange how high that shelf was in her memory. Now, it would be at her knee, but then, it had been nearly at her waist.
“Do the Tanoa have engineers?” he’d asked.
“I’m sorry?”
“People who build things like clocks and carts and buildings?”
“I don’t know. We have people who build things. But not clocks, I don’t think.” Those were an Andalano item, borne of their inability to tell the time by simply looking out the window and their obsession with planning and filling every moment throughout the day.
“I see,” he said. “So, where did you learn to take things apart like that?”
“Nowhere…” What a confusing question. Did a person really need to be taught how to take things apart?
“How old are you, child?”
“Six.”
At that, his head snapped back a little. “I thought you small for your age, but you aren’t, are you?”
Kasha folded her hands, unsure of why the man kept talking to her. He wasn’t going to yell, that much was clear, but he also would not let her go.
He knelt down creakily so that their eyes were on the same level. “Thrice I have written to the Engineers College, and thrice I have gotten no answer. In my younger days, I was too busy inventing to teach, and now that I am ready to teach, my failing health betrays me. They don’t want to send an apprentice to an old man who lives at the edge of the world.”
“I’m sorry,” she said, because it seemed the polite thing to say.
“Where is your mother?”
“At home. She has trouble with her eyes. She can’t see well.” She bit her lip, hoping he wouldn’t press her for details. Her mother’s maiming and her father’s death by a lynch mob was recent enough that the merest mention of it stung like a hot coal pressed to her heart.
“Ah,” was all he said. “Might I pay her a visit this afternoon?”
“Why?”
“As I said, I need an apprentice. Would you like to become an engineer?”
“Like you?”
“Yes, like me.”
Master Seamus was well known and respected around town. His shop was full of expensive wares. Kasha could not afford even the cheapest of his clocks.
“Yes,” she said without hesitation. “I would like that.”
“It will have to be a secret,” he said. “Our little secret.”

The Legend of the Blue Eyes
www.bkristinmcmichael.com/lotbe

Audiobook LOTBEArianna Grace liked her boring Midwestern teenage life where she ignored the many unanswered questions of her childhood. Why were her parents dead? Why doesn't she have a family? Why do her memories only start at five? When someone offers to explain it, Arianna thinks she is just getting answers. Instead, she is thrown into a world of night humans that drink blood.

On Arianna's sixteenth birthday, her world is thrown upside down when she changes into a vampire. Night humans, or demons as some call them, live in normal society. Learning all the new rules of a world she didn’t know existed would be hard enough, but it's further complicated by two former-friends that now want to help her take her role as the successor to her grandfather.

There is a war going on between the night humans. Sides have been taken and lines are not crossed. Four main clans of night humans are struggling for control of the night. Divided into two sides, clans Baku and Tengu have been at war for centuries with the clans Dearg-dul and Lycan. That is, until Arianna Grace finds out the truth; she is the bridge of peace between the two sides. But not everyone wants peace. With the night humans divided onto two sides, Arianna is now a pawn in the war between them. Arianna must choose a side- her mother’s family or her father’s- and for once in her life decide her own fate.

Becoming a Legend
www.bkristinmcmichael.com/bal

Audiobook BAL Arianna Grace is about to turn seventeen, and her life has been very complicated lately. She is the leader of four clans of night humans: dearg-dul, baku, tengu, and lycan. While the four clans seem to get along better with each other, there is internal conflict on both sides of her family, not to mention the three boys vying for her attention. Devin is set on keeping her safe above all else. Turner’s goal is to make her happy. And Andrew wants her for himself. At some point Arianna will have to choose between them, but first she needs to survive the plots against her.

Edward Lucan is making a chase for the power to lead the baku clans and is playing his cards by using his nephew Andrew to lure Arianna into a trap. Unfortunately for Lucan, Andrew has his own plans. He has spent the last year waiting for Arianna to see him as more than a friend, and he now finds it necessary to make a move for her affection, despite his uncle.

In the dearg-dul estate, Arianna discovers that the ambitious Lord Seeger has been laying his own strategies for power and is slowly poisoning her. After getting away with her grandfather’s murder, he is setting his sights on her. Luckily for Arianna, her team is on to all of the plans and is making their own counter strategies. Will it be enough to keep Arianna safe? Several people close to Arianna have been keeping secrets. If Arianna is to take power and control of the night, she will need to know the truth. Will someone finally tell her what it really means to become the legend everyone is waiting for, before it is too late to turn back?

Winning the Legend
www.bkristinmcmichael.com/wtl

Audiobook WTL Arianna has gathered the outside clans to decide her fate in marriage. A tournament will be held, and she is the prize, whether she wants to be or not. The only thing for her to do is watch the clan leaders fight over her, or is it? Thanks to her team’s well-made plans, Arianna has other strategies in place. Hopefully one of those plans will earn her freedom.

As the contestants gather and she learns more about the night human world, there are new allies to keep close and more enemies to keep even closer. Some even hold more secrets to her legend and possibly the actual reason to her existence. Now Arianna must decide what to do with the fate she has been dealt. The time has come to step out of the shadows of the men who protect her, and into her own power. The time is now for Arianna to take control, and fight for the destiny she wants to live.

Life Interrupted by Kristen Kehoe

Life Interrupted by Kristen Kehoe
328 pages
Rachel Reynolds isn't running from her past, but she wouldn't mind if it stopped chasing her, either. A senior in high school getting ready to graduate, Rachel is trying to look ahead toward her future, while forgetting the one night two years ago that set events in motion which altered the course of her entire life. Part of the future she's looking for includes falling out of love with her best friend, an act she seems incapable of, especially when it appears he might just love her, too. As Rachel tries to find her footing in a relationship that has baggage before it starts, a nightmare from her past reappears, upsetting the tenuous balance of Rachel's life and threatening the one person she loves most.

Rachel Reynolds: Real Life vs. Player Profile (as written by Rachel “Flow” Reynolds)

• Name: Rachel Reynolds
• Height: 6’0
• Age: 18
• Weight: yeah right
• POS: Outside/opposite
• College: undecided
• Stats: 0.250-4.00 hitting percentage; 1.26 aces/set; 2.0 passing percentage

Ah, my player profile. Beautiful. Why, you might ask? Is it because of the random numbers ninety percent of the population reading it don’t understand, or the fact that my height is in the top percentile for females? Because I refuse to put my weight on there as a high five to feminists everywhere, or maybe it’s because my college is undecided and, therefore, makes my future look open and inviting. Sadly, no, the beauty is not because of any of these things. The beauty in this profile comes from the fact that it’s just that, a profile, a glance, an overview of who I am that highlights only the necessary portions, while outright ignoring the other, more dramatic and infinitely more complicated portions of my life.
Dramatic, you say? You’re eighteen, a teenager with no responsibility and the world ahead of her, what drama could you possibly have? Please, don’t be such an adult (Read: naïve asshole).
In order to give you more insight into my life and its participants, I’ve listed below my teammates’ profiles, if you will, those people in my life that matter, that mean something to me, that impact me. Maybe after this you’ll understand why the player profile is so beautiful in its uncomplicatedness (spell check didn’t underline it, so I know that’s a word. Back off).

Players in the Life if Rachel “Flow” Reynolds.
• Parents: Sam and Leigh Reynolds
• Marital Status: Divorced.
• Relationship: Love mom, laugh at Dad.
• Stats: Mom’s a professor of Biology at the university; Dad’s discovering himself…and half the female population of our state.
• Siblings: Sister, Stacy.
• Age: 28
• Height: 5’7”
• Weight: Maybe a buck fifteen
• Stats: Type A perfectionist with OCD and narcissistic tendencies. A general pain in the ass.

• Best Friend #1: Katie Bowers
• Height: Tiny
• Age: 17 going on 23
• Weight: Less than me by a good twenty pounds
• Stats: one douchebag boyfriend, an absentee mother and criminal dad. Hello, daddy issues, party of one.

• Best Friend #2: Tripp Jones
• Height: 6’3” give or take an inch (I’ll take one, thanks)
• Age: 18
• Weight: more than me, praise Jesus.
• Stats: Girlfriend, Lauren, tiny and blonde and annoyingly pretty. Also, he’s the hated love of my life. We hooked up two years ago, ignored each other, and have come to a tentative truce. I want to fall out of love with him almost as much as I want to graduate from high school, though the latter is definitely more probable.

• Baby Daddy: Marcus Kash
• Oh yeah, I have a daughter. Surprise.
• Age: 20
• Height and Weight: who gives a shit
• Stats: Pothead asshole with violent tendencies. Yay, for drunken hookups and morning after consequences that last a lifetime.

• Baby: Gracie Reynolds
• Height: 30 inches (yep, tall like Mama)
• Age: one and half
• Weight: almost thirty pounds
• Stats: physically resembles her sperm donor of a father, and emotionally resembles her mother—thank God. Feisty, verbal, and generally hilarious.

What kind of drama, you ask? I’m a teen mom whose loved her best friend her entire life, and watched from afar while he dated a plethora of girls, except for that one time our sophomore year he chose me and we spent an intense night together. When I woke up without him, I got drunk and pregnant—the best response to a broken heart, yeah? Now, we’re graduating from high school, and I’m working on falling out of love with him while trying to get into college and give a good life to my daughter, while making sure the man who fathered her doesn’t kill me. Seriously. Yay to player profiles and simpler times, because life’s a bitch and she rarely allows me to ignore her.
Goodbye, uncomplicated, hello life, you sneaky biatch.

The Girl Who Believed in Fairy Tales by Heidi Garrett

27.6.14

The Girl Who Believed in Fairy Tales
Sub Genre: Magical Realism
Release Date: June 23, 2014

Heather Baker believes in fairy tales, and she turns to their timeless wisdom whenever life gets difficult.
Again and again, the playfulness, symbolism, and deeper meaning in fairy tales have filled Heather with hope, nurtured her spirit, and fired her imagination. Sometimes touching, and sometimes humorous, these tales capture the three most transformative experiences in her life:
—Heather reframes her childhood sorrow in “The Girl Who Watched for Elves”
—She embarks upon a life imbued with meaning in “The Girl Who Dreamed of Red Shoes”
—And after taking several wrong turns, she finds the place where she belongs in “The Girl Who Couldn’t Sing”
The Girl Who Believed in Fairy Tales chronicles the journey of someone who was willing to change the way she viewed the world... and never stopped believing.

The Archetypal Fairy Tale Journey
Many adults love fairy tales as much as children do. Why is this so? And why are fairy tales and their retellings so enduring?
In every fairy tale, five things always happen to the fairy tale character: She leaves home, she gets lost in the woods, she faces obstacles and/or tests, she overcomes these challenges, and she finds her happily ever after.
That journey, the fairy tale character’s journey, is archetypal because it involves the task of discovering and committing to the true Self. Since each of us yearns to connect with the true Self, the archetypal fairy tale journey is compelling in the tips and clues it offers about such an undertaking.

1. Leaving Home

Fairy Tale Character’s (FTC’s) leave home. The impetus for the departure varies; curiosity, duplicity, parents who are invasive, stepparents who are envious, a call to duty and/or sacrifice—something—ousts the naive child from their secure, loving environment.

2. Getting Lost in the Woods

The FTC always stumbles and falls psychologically, metaphorically, and literally in the first stage of her journey. Her naiveté, fear, and inexperience lead her to make poor choices that inevitably heighten her dire situation.

3. Facing Obstacles and Tests
As more trouble is heaped upon the FTC, she is driven to experiment. She must embrace her innate strength, courage, and/or cleverness; and she must make wiser choices in regards to her relationships and who she trusts. Otherwise, she’ll be fated to eke out a meek/mean/meager/impoverished existence… or die.

4. Overcoming the Challenges
Once the FTC comes into her own, i.e. once her consciousness has evolved to the point where she has become her own authority, she can achieve mastery over the trials that face her.

5. Living Happily Ever After

Living in accordance with her true nature, and following her true path, is the FTC’s ultimate living happily ever after. Partnering with the beloved is a function of her matured Self.
Throughout our very real lives, we cycle through these phases again and again and again. Fairy tales, presumably the province of children, can be quite effective in spurring adults toward believing in themselves—and Happily Ever Afters—as well.

That is the enduring power of the archetypal fairy tale journey.

About The Girl Who Couldn’t Sing:

She began to meditate upon "The Ugly Duckling” for she'd always imagined herself as a misplaced swan. But with all the changes, and her sadness shedding like the skin of snake, she'd stare in the mirror and whisper, “Perhaps, you're not even a bird."

Heather Baker struggles to find the balance between fantasy and reality in her everyday life. Enticed by Neptune, the planet that rules everything hazy and glamourous--she's desperate to become the next indie singer/songwriter sensation. Dogged by Saturn, the planet that rules obstacles and everything practical--she's confronted with the limitations of her abilities and talent.

Which planet will win?

The Girl Who Couldnt Sing” is free on Amazon June 23rd-27th!

Wreck You by Jennifer Snyder

5.6.14

wreckyou
It's a release day party for Wreck You by Jennifer Snyder! Wreck You is book three in the Coldcreek series.  Wreck You is only .99 cents for a limited time!

About the Book: Outspoken and flirtatious, Lauren Myers is more than most guys can handle. Even so, a disastrous trip to her boyfriend’s hometown in Greece leaves her reeling, forcing her to reevaluate her views on men and relationships all together. Level-headed and reserved, Ian Mason is perfectly content with his life the way that it is—until a phone call from his mother flips his life upside down. Suddenly, everything changes and he’s forced to hold the weight of the family business all on his own. After a chance meeting draws them together, the two will learn love often finds those who aren’t necessarily looking, and that there are moments in life that hold within them all the power to wreck you.

Meet Lauren Myers

A little bit wild and loads of fun, Lauren is definitely someone who can liven up a party. She’s flirty and adventurous, and incredibly bold with her words.
Same as every woman, Lauren sometimes holds a serious side as well…
“The warmth I’d felt inside died a little, because in that moment, I wanted to be that type of girl, the type who didn’t think it was awkward or strange for a guy to hold a car door open for her.
But I wasn’t.”
Lauren’s story is one of finding yourself. It’s about realizing everything happens for a reason—how we have to go through tough times to get to the better ones, and how heartbreaks can make us appreciate happiness more.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Meet Ian Mason

Super sweet and a little shy at times, Ian is a genuine good guy. I’ve wrote cocky arrogant types in the past, and while I love to add a dose of both in my male characters from time to time, writing a straight up good guy was refreshing.
Don’t get me wrong though, Ian is no dud in the personality department…
“Confident enough, are you kidding me? I just got a tattoo.” He shifted his eyes from the road to glance at me for a split-second. “Sweetheart, I went from confident, to dead sexy, to fucking badass in a single afternoon.”
Ian’s story is one of responsibility. It’s all about learning that sometimes in life you have to step up your game for those you love, while at the same time it reminds us that stepping out of our comfort zone occasionally is healthy.

Wreck You Excerpt One:

(From Ian)

“I drink just about anything, but because I started with a margarita, I’ll have a shot of some tequila.” She sat up straight and tipped her head to the side. “What about you? Are you just a sloppy beer drinker?” “A sloppy beer drinker?” I questioned while polishing off my last few swigs. “Yeah. They say beer drinkers are known for sloppy, lazy sex.” She flashed me this look, one that made me feel as though she were waiting for a specific type of reaction. She was baiting me to ask how she knew this and to push the topic of conversation further; it was reflected in her eyes. “Never heard that before.” I pushed my empty beer bottle away. If that was the type of sex she associated with guys who drank beer, then I didn’t want to be lumped into that category in her mind—even though it was too late for that. “So what do they say about tequila?” “I’m sure you’ve heard the saying.” Her eyes glittered with mischief as she glared at me. I shook my head. “And what saying is that?” “That tequila makes clothes come off.” I laughed. “Oh really? I think I have heard that before actually. It’s in a song or something. The question is—is it true?” I raised an eyebrow at her, wondering where the hell this brazen guy had come from. This was so not me. I didn’t talk this way to females. This was Brent. Oh, God, Brent had rested at the bottom of that beer. Yeah, it was definitely time to switch up my drink of choice for the night.

Deadly Delicious by K.L. Kincy

11.4.14

Today I'm excited to bring you the release week promo and cover reveal of the middle grade novel, Deadly Delicious by K.L. Kincy.  K.L. Kincy is a pen name for author Karen Kincy, author of young adult and adult novels.   To make things exciting we have the cover artist, Kirbi Fagan, here to tell us about the creation of the cover of Deadly Delicious!  Deadly Delicious is out now!

Creating the Cover by Kirbi Fagan
Painting the cover for for the novel started with an email. When I heard the story was set in the 1950's, I knew it would be fun project for me. I'm always eager to paint strong young girls on an adventure. The magical twist of the story was icing on the cake --- pun intended!
Starting an illustration is the most exciting part for me, it is when I feel the most creative. When you have a great story like "Deadly Delicious," feeling inspired isn't hard, the ideas flow. Below is the first scribble of Josephine, drawn while reading the manuscript.
Picture1
After a many sketches, I worked with Karen to find a sketch that was just right. Flash, the dog in the story, was my favorite character and I knew I had to find a place for him on the cover.

Next, I grabbed my camera and started shooting the reference material for the painting. I photographed it all. Another illustrator even helped me out and photographed her dog at the angle I needed. Below are few shots of the zombie hands, frosting covered and all.

On to the painting. I used both traditional and digital media to create the final artwork. Working digitally allows me to experiment with things I might not have the freedom to do with real paint. The traditional element allows me to create rich colors and real texture.

Now about that type... what a mess! I won't be making a career change to a cake decorator anytime soon...

At last... the cover!

About Deadly Delicious:
Twelve-year-old Josephine DeLune can’t take the heat this sweltering summer of 1955, and she was out of the kitchen long ago. An awful cook, she ruins recipes left and right, and she certainly can’t compete with her family’s reputation for extraordinary food. Her daddy’s parents ran one of the best restaurants in all of Paris, but Josephine lives in Paris, Missouri. On her mama’s side, she’s up against a long tradition of sinfully delicious soul food. Rumor has it, her Creole ancestors cooked up some voodoo to make tasty even tastier. Josephine knows the secret ingredient: she comes from a long line of conjure witches with spellbinding culinary skills. Disenchanted, Josephine works as a carhop at Carl and Earl’s Drive-In. Just plain old hamburgers, hot dogs, and curly fries, nothing magical about them. She’s got bigger fish to fry, though, when a grease fire erupts into a devilish creature who hisses her name with desire. Turns out he’s the Ravenous One, the granddaddy of all voodoo spirits, and he’s hungry for her soul. Josephine thinks he’s got the wrong girl—she’s no witch—but a gorgeous, dangerous night-skinned lady named Shaula sets her straight. Josephine is one of the most powerful witches alive, so overflowing with conjure that her out-of-control cooking simply catches fire. Josephine would love to laugh this off, but Shaula warns her that she must learn to master her magic before the Ravenous One devours her soul. Spurred into action, Josephine breaks out her grandma’s old conjure cookbook and starts cooking. Nothing grand, just the usual recipes for undying friendship and revenge. But soon Josephine can’t escape the consequences of her conjure. When the people of Paris start turning into zombies with a strange fondness for cake, Josephine looks pretty responsible for their undead reawakening…

28.3.14

A great big welcome to Katie Cross who is here to celebrate the release of her YA fantasy, Miss Mabel's School for Girls, which released yesterday March 27th! I absolutely love the look, and the sound of this book. I know I'll be reading it!!

For me, writing a book involved a lot of staring at a computer screen, slapping the delete button, pulling my
hair out, and Pinterest.

Oh, yes. You heard right. Pinterest.

The power of Pinterest comes from the images. I always find photos that I want to remember and have access to, so I pin them to a board for later reference. So, I thought to myself, Hey, I'm releasing my first book, Miss Mabel's School for Girls. Why don't I give the readers something to look at in anticipation of the book?

So instead of a boring interview where I talk about how great I am, I'm here today to take you on a visual tour to give you a few ideas of what you can expect to find in this exciting new young adult fantasy novel, Miss Mabel's School for Girls.

Wrought iron fence:
There's a wrought iron fence around the outside of the ancient manor that is Miss Mabel's School for Girls much like this one. It's known for creaking in the wind.

Potions bottles:
Potion bottles hold oh-so-many possibilities. Witches love potions, and the witches in Miss Mabel's School
for Girls are no exception. These particular bottles contain a variety of spices and herbs, all of which you can win during the launch giveaway March 27th-30th!

Peacock feather:
Miss Mabel loves peacock feathers. They represent beauty and vanity: her two favorite virtues.

Green mossy tree:
Miss Mabel's School is located in Letum Wood, a lush, expansive forest that hides many secrets. Some of these secrets catch up with Bianca Monroe, our sixteen-year-old heroine, in the dark of the night.

About the Author:
My world revolves around my husband (who is a major hottie), my Vizsla's, and the mountains.

I wear hiking boots instead of heels when I need to feel powerful, and on a bad day, I love a weightlifting workout. Actually, I love it on a good day.

I don't eat bread because my thyroid doesn't like it, although there are days I miss it. Especially ciabatta. Sweet potatoes are kind of my thing. Cookies too.

I write because I never stopped.
