The Boogie Trapp by Kerry Copeland Smith

3.11.14

Something happened to two boys over sixty years ago. The backwoods of Alabama in the 1940s set the stage for this edge of your seat thriller. Boogie and Trapper are best friends, known about town for their wild, annoying, obnoxious, and hysterically funny antics. Roaming the woods, swimming in the creek, playing Double Dare, smoking, cussing, drinking beer, and always trying to outdo each other.
These two thirteen-year-old boys growing up in this time period have freedoms that would be considered absolutely crazy by today's standards. Riding their bikes on a drizzly April day, goofing off and having fun for hours, looking forward to the boy/girl party they are excitedly anticipating later today, rumors of kissing games and more make them silly and giddy. Then the day goes terribly wrong. They have found themselves in a desperate "no way out" situation. They are thrown into a horrific event that moves faster than a speeding bullet, a wild, white knuckled roller coaster ride, RUN Boogie, RUN, RUN................ A suspenseful, scary thriller, tragically horrific, it is a story that must be told, a promise that must be kept. Their lives will be changed forever - can they get away, and will they ever live to tell the tale?

Kerry Copeland Smith is the pseudonym of Harold (Hal) W. Brewer and also his alter-ego, Brewer will readily confess. “He was there waiting for me when they pulled me from my mother’s womb,” Brewer laughingly says. “Boogie is older, smarter, tougher and more daring, so I have been very fortunate to have had him around all these years.” Brewer, the youngest of four children, grew up in the small coal mining town of Bradford, Alabama, where his father was employed as a coal miner. His mother, a “stay at home mom,” was an accomplished seamstress, an avid reader, and strict disciplinarian, who “kept close tabs on me,” Brewer states. Brewer attended Mortimer Jordan High in Morris, Alabama and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was hired by Montgomery Ward Co. in 1964 and spent the next thirty-two years as an executive, in both their Retail and Logistics’ division. After retiring from the retail business in 1996, he formed his own Real Estate Investment Co., which he managed until fully retiring in 2008. “Boogie was there with me every step of the way, Brewer says. When things weren’t right and the going was tough, I called on Boogie and things got straightened out!” Brewer is also an accomplished artist. His paintings hang in numerous homes throughout the south. He currently lives in Tampa, Florida with his wife Tammie and their three cats. He has two sons (from a previous marriage), three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memories From a Different Future by David Pandolfe

3.10.14

For Nikki, it feels like no time has passed since they rescued Henry’s sister from her abductors. After all, in the in-between realm, time is completely different than for those still “living.” Even though it’s been almost twenty years, only lately has Nikki started crossing between realms again. She’s been checking on Ian—the person they knew as Curtis before he jumped into a new life. Nikki hasn’t admitted it to the others but she’s been curious. Could Ian’s life really be as good as it seems? Can she find the courage herself to try the other realm again despite what happened last time?
When Nikki suddenly starts receiving ghostlike visits from Curtis—all these years since he returned to the physical realm—she can’t imagine how it’s possible. She also realizes it has to mean something serious. Nikki soon learns that, three days from now, an incident on Earth will end Curtis’s new life. Now, Nikki, Henry and Jamie must find a way to alter the outcome of a future event only they know will take place. They’ll also have just minutes to make that happen. Otherwise, Curtis is going to die again, taking with him any hope Nikki and her friends had for starting over.

David Pandolfe is the author of three novels, Streetlights Like Fireworks, Jump When Ready and Memories From A Different Future (Jump When Ready #2). His short fiction has also appeared in literary reviews.
While he's still writing about himself in third-person, David should probably also mention that he lives outside Richmond, VA, with his wife, two kids and a dog who's terrified of thunder (not the best situation since it thunders from spring until fall in Richmond).

Review: Minty by Christina Banach

5.9.14

Synopsis
Fourteen-year-old twins Minty and Jess are inseparable. Maybe they bicker now and then, even crave a bit of space once in a while. But they have a connection. Unbreakable. Steadfast. Nothing can tear them apart. Until a family trip to the coast puts their bond in jeopardy. As Minty tries to rescue her dog from drowning she ends up fighting for her life. Will Minty survive? If she doesn’t, how will Jess cope without her? Only the stormy sea has the answer.

My Review
I completely and utterly fell in love with this book. It was read in a matter of hours as I just couldn't put it down. Both heartfelt and humorous, this is one of those stories that will stay with me for, well probably for years! Minty is such a loveable character, as is her dear sister and their bond is typical of twins (or so I understand). Nothing can pull these girls apart and there lies the problem.
Gosh it's so difficult to write a review of this book without giving the game away!
Let's just say that if you love stories with depth, humour and real life relationships, then you'll love this. It has it all and I really hope that Christina writes more soon because she has become my 'One to Watch' this year.

About the author
Christina Banach is a former head teacher who lives in Scotland, UK, with her husband and their two rescue dogs. She loves walking; delicious food and wine; evenings at the theatre; exploring new places; surfing the Net; listening to music; and anything that makes her laugh. Plus she has a bit of a thing about shoes and handbags. She loves reading, and is especially keen on young adult and children's fiction (all those years buying for school libraries!).
She is currently working on her next novel.
