#AtoZChallenge: C is for Cycling

3.4.13

The A to Z Challenge features bloggers from all walks of life posting about everything and anything every day (except Sundays) during the month of April. As I'm a complete newbie to this challenge (and I'm in the middle of edits for book six), I haven't given myself a theme to adhere to! So, on with the challenge. Today...

Finally, after months of almost constant rain, yesterday afternoon I finally got out on my bike for a lovely cycle out with my husband. It was incredibly relaxing, not to mention soothing on my back after sitting down at the computer all day (week/month/year) long. Granted, my muscles are a bit sore this morning though!
I've never been a particularly active person. I hated P.E at school and was pretty useless at most sports. Even as an adult, I failed miserably at keeping fit. I tried everything: aerobics (I couldn't keep up with the instructor), swimming (I couldn't stop picturing Jaws and piranhas in the pool), pilates (breathe in and zip up... huh?!), yoga (Forward Doggie what?) but nothing ever stuck. I'd do it for a few weeks and then just get back in to my usual routine of, well, nothing.
Anyway, about a year and a half ago my husband was introduced to cycling. He bought all the kit and went out once or twice a week. While he was out enjoying himself, I was feeling sorry for myself. So we went out and bought a fabulous bicycle for me too and I haven't looked back since!
When the weather was good enough to cycle, I felt better than I had done in years. My problematic back was much improved, my wobbly bits were far more toned and even the those pesky little thread veins on my legs had disappeared! Hurray!

  1. My husband loves to ride too,not quite like the diehards yet, but he does enjoy it when the weather is nice. I am like you, I have tried it all and I just stick with walking and hiking in the Red Rocks in Sedona. So glad you are enjoying cycling :)

  2. My boyfriend is very much into cycling, so it's funny to read this, as we were just talking about it. I never learned to ride a bike as a kid, believe it or not! This might be some more impetus for me ... hm.

Also I see you're a YA author! My Masters degree is in middle school lit, and I'd loooooooove to read and review one of your books on my blog! :D

  3. I'm with you about swimming! Jaws warped me as a kid and I can't ever be in the water without thinking about it!

  4. Cycling is great for riding with our kids but not for sport. We'd die.

  5. Lucy, I'm jealous of your hiking in Sedona... it sounds AMAZING!

Bookish Geek, once you do learn to cycle, it never really leave you so get in the saddle and give it a go! I'd love to give you a copy of The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw. Email me at suzyturnerbooks[at]hotmail[dot]com and I'll send you a copy!

Jennifer, I can't believe there is someone else out there with the same problem as me... I thought I was just the mad one lol!!

Dani, I bet cycling with the kids is great fun. Sadly I don't have any of my own :(
