Sole Eaby, seventeen, has a few complaints he’d like to lodge against life, the main one being that his dad, Cedro, has recently quit his job and withdrawn his entire life savings, which included Sole’s college fund. Why? To launch a food truck business he knows nothing about.
To cope, Sole uses his knifelike wit to moonlight as a stand-up comedian, and so far, it’s paying off. He’s not only replenishing his college treasury, he’s making people laugh; but it’s one person in particular he performs for. Her name is Ava. When the fated bond of humor joins the two, and they begin a sort of quasi-romance, things begin to seem somewhat bearable. Of course, that’s when an ill-timed event decides to put another spin on things. Just when Sole is ready to move on with his own life and disconnect himself from his father and the family business, he suddenly finds himself in charge of the food truck he desperately loathes. Here is where Sole must realize that the answers to love and life are not to be found apart but, rather, are more like a savory recipe: only by combining the ingredients will the wonderful flavors reveal themselves. When comedy isn’t enough, the future seems ever bleak, and a fledgling love has barely had a chance to bloom, where will Sole turn?

H.A.'s love for all things caffeinated is what keeps him awake and alert so he can pursue that glorious tyrant called Nostalgia. And after all, isn't that what provokes most adult authors to write stories about the teenage years they long ago left behind (referring to Nostalgia, not the caffeine...he hopes)? When he isn't writing, H.A. can be found quaffing coffee (Yes, he might be addicted--don't judge) reading, riding his bike, snapping photos, making music, working on his theory of everything, and, on rare occasions, attempting to discover the elusive, and maybe impossible, secret to time travel. H.A. lives in So Cal. Street Food and Love is H.A.'s first novel.

The Revelation Series: A New Adult Paranormal Romance Series by Randi Cooley Wilson
If you stop to think about your life’s story, as a whole, you’ll discover composed of many chapters, or stages. Each phase filled with mystery, romance, relationships, battles, outcomes – both good and bad, innocent moments that take your breath away and if you’re lucky, instances that will define you.
When I look over my own life’s story, I always stop on my college years as a favorite chapter. One packed with it’s own set of angst, new and old friendships, heartbreak and insanely fun moments.
The transition into adulthood comes with different life challenges than high school. You focus harder on your future, become more independent, try new things and hopefully have an amazing social life, all while trying to balance and embrace becoming an adult.
As a writer, it’s those new adult experiences that fascinate me the most. These are the years when you truly are just starting out in life. You’re in a transitional period between adolescence and adulthood, one where you tend to experience love and friendships on a completely different level.
Eighteen to twenty-four is an amazing time where anything and everything seem possible. The world is completely open to you. You create your own journey, make your own destiny and figure out what’s worth fighting for.
New adult books explore those levels of emotions, relationships, and journeys. The stories written in this genre can be darker in themes, edgy and raw when dealing with a more mature and emotional side of relationships. It’s those reasons why I chose to write Restraint and all books really within The Revelation Series, as a new adult paranormal romance.
In my opinion, having my protagonist, Eve Collins as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, allows me to delve into deeper levels of her emotions, reactions and opinions. I’m able to write her at a different stage of maturity that I could not have, had I made this series young adult.
At its core this series is a love story, the kind of love that’s your first real love. Not infatuation, or innocent attraction, but soul moving love. Yet, this is also an age where ‘real life’ becomes a struggle. Loyalties, obligations, duties, family expectations and sacrifices are normal everyday happenstances. Self-discovery that comes only with independence and mature thought processes usually rears its head around this time. Wants vs. needs become apparent during this age. The mundane details of everyday life and responsibilities must also be juggled in this age category. All of these hurdles are what Eve and her protector, Asher St. Michael face as new adults throughout this series.
I hope you will take a chance on both Revelation and Restraint (The Revelation Series) and join Eve on her journey of self-discovery, love and sacrifice. Thanks so much for allowing me to chat about why I chose the new adult genre for this series. Always, Randi.

Randi was born and raised in Massachusetts where she attended Bridgewater State University and graduated with a degree in Communication Studies. After graduation she moved to California where she lived happily bathed in sunshine and warm weather for fifteen years.
Randi and her husband recently moved back to Massachusetts with their daughter where she was encouraged to begin writing again.
Revelation is her first novel and The Revelations Series is her first New Adult Paranormal Romance book series.

Breathe by Elena Dillon
Book 1 - Breathe Series
Young Adult Romantic Suspense
Jasmine’s life wasn’t normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn’t been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn’t bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.

In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn’t keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily…or not.

I write Young Adult love stories because as my husband would tell you, I never matured much past fifteen. There is nothing better to me than a good romance with an amazing hero, throw in some creepy suspense and I'm in.
I write from my home office in Southern California with our English Bulldog, Brutus to keep me company. To hear about him, my writing experience and read some outtakes of my stories check out my blog at elenadillon.com.

Have you ever wondered where fairytales go once they're created?

It's been eight years since Story Sparks last had a dream. Now they're back, tormenting her as nightmares she can't remember upon waking. The black waters of Lake Sandeen, where her Uncle Peter disappeared decades before, may hold the secret to Story's hidden memories, or a truth she'd rather not know. On a bright summer afternoon, Story and her two best friends, Elliott and Adam, take a hike to the lake, where they dive into the cool water and never reemerge. What they find is beyond anything they've ever imagined could be possible, a world where dangers lurk in the form of Big Bad Wolves, living Nightmares and meddlesome witches and gods.

Now Story must remember who she really is and somehow stop two worlds from ultimate annihilation, all while trying not to be too
distracted by the inexplicable pull she feels toward a certain dark-eyed traveler who seems to have secrets of his own. The fates of the worlds are counting on her.

An excerpt from Thunderlight, BOOK TWO in the series
The girl had made it.
The Rubicon saved her life, so a part of him was still fighting me. I could still see her eyes searching mine. They bore into my soul, seeking answers. How was this possible! The wall wouldn’t allow any human to go to the other side.
Albert’s laughter echoed inside the castle; s startling reminder that good would always win. He would pay dearly for this. I would find a way, but I promised she wouldn’t live much longer.
I got up, rubbed my face hard and let the emotion of my anger escaped my lips. The rage that emanated from deep within me overpowered the haunting laughter and echoed throughout the entire castle.
“Master,” Cain’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Speak my loyal servant,” I said out loud. “What is the news?”
“Everything is in place. We won’t fail you,” his voice said in my head.
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and let it out hard. “We’ll see.”

Chapter One

Castle of Etan
Anger, betrayal, and hate turned my stomach acid, it consumed my mind and I watched as bottles, papers and books on the desk, flew off and crushed to the floor.
A maid rushed to my side. She didn’t say anything, but her eyes reflected fear. The dustpan in her hand trembled as she started to sweep up the jagged shards of glass. Rising from the floor she began to straighten the books that had fallen to the floor in a heap. Every few seconds I would notice her eyes dart nervously in my direction as if a mere breath would make me lash out as her with my outstretched hand.
I touched her face gently until my hand reached her neck, tightening slowly as my anger began to rise once again. My grip tightened around her soft, shapely neck as I lifted her up from her position on the floor at my feet. Listening carefully I could hear her heart fluttering like a bird trapped inside a cage.
“How did I become this way?” I thought, giving voice to my reality softly.
She just stared at me with round, brown unblinking eyes. Her eyes were sunken deep into the surface of her face and her cheek bones were sharply defined.
Looking at her sullen face made me feel worse. I lifted up my other hand and struck the woman hard across her cheek.
A cry left her mouth and I threw her from me as if she weighed nothing. She skidded across the floor landing in a heap against a wall of cold, unforgiving stone. If I was a dragon I would blast fire, redeem this wretched place to a pile of insignificant ashes.
Two other maids, hearing the startled cry, rushed into the room. Their eyes were wide as they took in the room and the immobile heap near the far wall. “Sorry, me lord,” the older one said. “She’s new, we will train her better.”
They picked up the maid who had come too and begun sobbing. She clutched the side of her face, cover the huge red hand print where I struck her.
I nodded. The old maid knew her place well, although I still didn’t care for her name, she knew where she stood.
I plunged myself down onto the chair and closed my eyes. A silent roar growled inside of me lighting a fire of rage deep in my core.

“One of us would finally end what had been started by the machayiwiw so many years ago. I would have to kill him. It was just that simple. I never thought I would want to kill anybody or anything, but maybe I never had anything worth killing for before.”
-Emmeline Rima Belrose, The Scarring (Spirit Warriors, Book 2)
In the majestic beauty of a Montana summer, Emme and her friends celebrate her near-drowning survival and their defeat of the powerful evil spirit, the machayiwiw. But even as they rejoice, things are amiss. Emme watches helplessly as her family divides, and her friends struggle to hold their relationship together. Worse yet, the love-of-her life, Charlie, announces that he will move back to the reservation, without Emme. Different nightmares take over and Emme realizes she must fight and kill—or watch those she loves be killed. Friends from the reservation reach out to Emme and show her what evil can steal from her. Emme believes that evil can never break her bond with the Spirit Warriors or the love she shares with Charlie. Or can it?
Although this is the second book in the Spirit Warriors series, it can be read as a stand alone novel.

An Interview with Author D.E.L. Connor
What was your favorite book growing up?
When I was old enough to read it was the Little House on the Prairie series. I must have read and reread each of them a hundred times. I honestly thought I was Laura Ingalls Wilder. Most girls my age were into dolls and while I liked dolls and playing house, my version of playing house always had a log house and a covered wagon. They are still my favorite books to read to children. Can't you just picture yourself on a hot summer day bouncing along in the back of the covered wagon?
Who is your favorite author (living or dead)?
I have more than one. Obviously I love Laura Ingalls Wilder, but I am also a huge fan of Larry McMurray. I grew up admiring strong women writers like Margaret Mitchell and Harper Lee and more recently J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyers.
What inspired you to write the Spirit Warriors series?
Actually is has been a long time coming. I wrote the short story that the Spirt Warriors evolved from in college may years ago. The professor asked me to stay after class and he told me how good it was, but unfortunately, it was too dark to be a children's story. I put it away and went on with my career as a nurse. Finally J.K Rowling and Stephenie Meyers came out with new dark tales and the young adult market was born. The time was finally right! I finished Book 1 in two weeks. The struggle to get it published took more time, but here I am with two books in the story completed.
What character do you most identify with in Spirit Warriors: The Scarring?
Probably Lilly, I tend to be kind to a fault, and love my friends and family unconditionally. I think as a child I wished I could have been more like Bets and Emme. They are headstrong, brave and willing to fight for anything or anyone they cared about. I was shy when I was young, although no one believes that today! LOL
Can you tell us about your next project?
Why of course. I am about half way through book 3 in the series The Burning. There will be 6 books total in the series. Book 4 will be The Lamenting, Book 5 The Ensouling and then a Prequel to be named later. In between those books or after them I'm not sure which, I plan to write a new adult romance novel about loss and finding the chance to love again.

“Is it any wonder I became a bank robber?”
But she never dreamed she’d fall in love…
Wealthy high school student Robin McArthur thinks she has it all figured out when it comes to bilking her work-a-holic dad for guilt money as a substitute for his genuine affection. Until one day he suffers a stroke at his law office, and she learns the brutal truth—
They’re broke.
Her stepmom has skipped the country.
And everyone from bankers to bookies has lined up in her dad’s hospital room to collect on the millions he’s racked up in debt.
Panicked and desperate, Robin figures she has two choices: either surrender to the pestering caseworker and live in a skanky foster home, or take a chance and sneak her dad out of the hospital to make a run for it. Little does she know that stealing a car and hitting the road means that before the day is through, she will rob her first bank.
Now an outlaw, Robin finds a backwoods trailer park to hide her dad from authorities where she encounters Creek, a bad-boy in crime who first steals her money and then steals her heart. The two of them embark on a round of increasingly dangerous heists to provide for their motley trailer park neighbors. But what Robin hadn’t counted on is the way these hardscrabble people begin to embrace her and become the first real family she’s ever known. And along the way, worldly-wise Creek teaches her how to develop a genuine relationship with her dad based on the hard truths of their lives instead of his past lies. As Robin and Creek’s criminal journey forces them to make gut-wrenching choices, they soon begin to discover that people are more precious than pocketbooks, and true love means opening your heart to the kinds of treasures money can’t buy.

Synopsis for the Robbin’ Hearts Series:
Robin McArthur never dreamed her family would go broke—or that she’d start robbing banks to provide for those she loves and wants to protect. Along the way, she falls for Creek, her bad-boy partner in crime who teaches her far more than she ever dreamed about matters of the heart. But can love heal the cracks in Robin’s soul after she learns the truth about her family’s dark secrets? Once Robin becomes an outlaw with Creek, it’s impossible to hide from reality anymore, and their lives transform into a sensual and magical adventure as they uncover the mysteries of what it means to find your true identity—and to fall in love . . .

Stone of Thieves
As I give Creek a swift nod and head toward the kitchen, I feel a tap on my shoulder.
Swiveling around, I half-expect to see the Italian tour guide. But I find myself gazing at a man so desperately handsome he steals all breath from my chest.
His dark unruly hair frames his cheekbones in random curls, and his face is all hard angles—smooth and sharp as Venetian cut glass. Eyes twinkling, he gives me a broad smile filled with enough charm to send a dozen girls’ hearts into spirals. The second that thought strikes me, a strange flutter arises in my gut and works its way out to my limbs in waves. I feel the stone throb against my pocket, harassing me with whispers that are drowned out by the pulsing sound of blood rushing to my brain.
Because something about this man’s eyes mystify me and holds me into place.
Although he appears in his early 20s at best, somehow there’s a shadow in his gaze that bears the weight of a very old man. Like the other tour guides, he’s dressed in period clothing from the Renaissance, an ivory peasant shirt and pants with brocade detail and black boots. I have to presume he’s here to help with the tour.
“You want to see the rest of the palazzo, sì mia amica?”
He doesn’t wait for an answer, holding out his arm in an oddly cavalier way, as though he were about to ask me to dance at a ball. “Here, let me show you the map room. The group will-a join us soon.”
I hesitate, grinding my heels into the alabaster floor.
Truth be told, I’d love some of that pasta in the kitchen because I’m still starving, even after the bread and cheese we wolfed down from the nun’s handout earlier. But as I hear the Conté de Bargona bragging about his blood-red sauce, I can’t help thinking anything’s better than being near him right now. He did seem to recognize me—at least as someone who looks spooky-close to his ancestor. Does that mean he pegs me as his daughter’s bastard child?
Before I can entertain the possibilities, the tour guide forcefully whisks me up several stairs by the time I manage to jerk my elbow away from him. Glancing over my shoulder, I spot the other docents cleaning up the blood spill, and I wonder how Creek is doing with rifling through desks and files. At least this trip to the map room could buy us some more time. I give the young man a hint of smile.
He responds by breaking free of my arm and bolting up the steps to the landing, where I can see a room at the top covered in yellowed, archaic maps. Flashing that broad smile again, he disappears, and all of a sudden the landing is filled with a warm, inviting glow. Curious, I head to the map room and find him standing beside two French doors that are opened wide to a balcony.
“The only way to truly know Venezia is by its light,” he says with a certain triumph in his voice.
He’s merely a silhouette now, his amazing physique backlit by the subtle morning sunshine, almost like a phantom.
As my eyes readjust to the outline of his dark contours, I notice there are Mardi Gras masks hanging on the walls next to the double doors. Their hollow, black eyes and faces empty of the warmth of human flesh spook me a little.
“A-Aren’t we here to see the maps?” I remind him, cautious about stepping any further into this room. I turn slightly to glance into the hallway, my eyes hunting past several doors that have been left ajar.
“Creek,” I whisper sharply. “Where are you . . .”
No answer.
Dammit—
Returning my gaze to my host, I find he’s grabbed two of the masks and he’s motioning for me to step out onto the balcony.
“Maps only record the past,” he insists. “Come, let’s see the future.”
I draw in a breath, rationalizing it won’t hurt to stall for more time. “OKAY,” I voice too loudly, hoping it might help Creek detect where I am, “I CAN CHECK OUT THE VIEW WITH YOU FOR A MINUTE.”
Not a sound stirs from the hallway.
Only my echo as it slowly fades away.
With a sigh, and several excuses in mind to bolt free from this guy as soon as I hear evidence of Creek, I shrug my shoulders and stroll out to the balcony to take in the sights.
Before us is the Grand Canal, its waters a deep murky green with hints of shimmer from the early sun that’s begun to peek above the elegant domes and spires. A layer of mist still shrouds the city like a blanket, making it appear hazy and sepia toned, and every bit as ancient as its architecture belies.
“Tell me,” the young man asks, “what do you see, Rubina?”
My heart skips a beat.
I haven’t told him my name yet. Much less the Italian version the de Bargonas gave me at birth—
And I feel the ruby wobble to match my quickening pulse.
“Um, I see green water,” I pipe up, extremely antsy now to get back to Creek. The time for politeness is way over, and as I spin on my heels to go inside, his hand stops my shoulder with the abruptness of stone. He holds up a glittering gold mask.
“Un momento. Just put it on—then tell me what you see.”
He adjusts a shiny black mask over his face that instantly makes him look foreboding.
“This will only take a second,” his accent rolls in an almost musical tone, “I promise. I simply want you to understand. Everything in Venezia changes. The light, the masks, the people—nothing is ever as it seems.”
Annoyed, I slip the gold mask over my head, only because I calculate Creek will emerge from the hallway any second now. Interestingly, when I glance back over the canal, the water has transformed from emerald to an ethereal amethyst with hints of rose that sparkle over the currents as the sun ascends more boldly over the city. It’s beautiful—there’s no doubt about it. But it’s way past time for me to join Creek.
Just as I open my mouth to say a swift goodbye, the man grabs my face in his hands and swallows me in a kiss.
Not just any kiss—
He wraps himself around me as though he could pour his spirit like a searing liquid into my throbbing veins.
And the fluttering I felt earlier now runs up and down my spine like wildfire, stinging me with a heat that focuses like a laser on the stone inside my pocket.
It takes every ounce of strength I have to break free from him. And the second I do, I haul off and slap him so hard it knocks that black mask off his face.
“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!” I cry, reeling, my fists clenched tight.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spy a wash of red. The bold sun now glows like an angry ball that pierces the mist of the city, coating the entire canal the color of blood.
The young man gazes at me without apology.
“I only wanted to kiss something beautiful before it dies,” he says. “Because make no mistake—Vittorio de Bargona will kill you.”
He steals another kiss before I can gather the wherewithal to shove his ass back.
“Go to the gypsies, Rubina,” he whispers, “out in the countryside. That is, if you want to live.”
In that moment, he becomes hazy, like the mist that still threads between the buildings of the city. Then he disappears.
And all that’s left at my feet is his shiny black mask.

The Bella's Point Blog Hop Challenge

15.7.14

I'm so excited to be taking part in Elizabeth Seckman's very first blog hop challenge! Elizabeth is one of those totally adorable awesome author bloggers that most people would do anything for. Hence this blog hop challenge ;)
But first, let me tell you about Elizabeth's awesome new book, Bella's Point (with the most gorgeous book cover, I might add!)...

Isabella Troy Stanley is a divorced, slave freeing pariah surviving in the shattered post Civil War south the only way a fallen debutante knows how.
She heads to a Yankee prison and buys herself a husband.
Jack Byron is the former Troy plantation stable boy and object of young Bella's affection. He rejected her then, and he's still not sold on the idea of marrying her now.
It’s complicated.
Though to Bella, it’s simple: make Jack love her, marry her, and live happily ever after. The plan seems to work...at least until her secret is revealed.

Elizabeth is a wife, a mom, and a writer. She has four wonderful boys, one dusty house, and three published books to her credit. Feel free to check them out and buy them HERE! Erm, the books, not the kids or the house...though all things in life are negotiable ;)
You can find her here - Blog // Facebook // Twitter
Cover art by Sprinkles on Top Studios.

The idea of the blog hop challenge is that us bloggers must write something (anything) using the prompt 'The year was 1865'. So here's my piece of flash fiction :)
Don't forget to check out the other participants below!

The year was 1865 when I was fed the blood of a vampire. Little did I know at the time that I would still be alive today. It's July 2014 and I am a vampire. Not the evil blood-sucking kind that kills for the fun of it, no of course not. That's not me at all. I'm a nice vampire. I live in a nice house in a nice neighbourhood with my nice family. Technically, they're not really my family but we've lived together for just over a hundred years so they're as close to a family as I'm ever going to get.
So where was I? Oh yes, a nice vampire with a nice house and a nice neighbourhood and a nice job. I'm an author, you see. Have been for as long as I can remember. I write books about vampires – the gory kind with lots of blood and murder and disgusting stuff. I know, I know... it's a far cry from the real me but, hey, what can I say? It sells!
I've tried my hand at writing more genteel stuff but I can't quite get my head around it. I ought to be good at that, especially the historical kind considering the fact that I've been alive for... erm 169 years. Yes that's right, I've been twenty years old for 169 years. That's a long time to be alive. But I digress, my writing. That's right. I'd like to be able to take complete advantage of my being alive for 169 years but I get so bored of history. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Why would I write about it?
They say write what you know, don't they? But bah... bored, bored, bored. I want to be surrounded by blood and gore... the fictional sense of course. So that's who I am, anyway. So tell me, who might you be?

Want to join the challenge? It'll be open until the 31st. Sign up here.

Rave Reviews Recruitment Day: Freedom!

14.7.14

I started writing seriously in 2010. It was after I was made redundant from my job as a magazine editor. Although I loved that job and the people I worked with, I hated the politics involved. Needless to say, that day felt like my world had come crumbling down until I started to see it for what it really was: FREEDOM.
It was the biggest kick up the backside that I could have imagined. It made me sit back and think about what I really wanted to do and that was the freedom to write whatever I wanted to write. I haven't looked back since. And I'm now the author of six full length novels and one novella. My seventh book should be out in a few months time!
But all of this couldn't have happened without the support of my fellow authors, book bloggers and of course the most amazing readers in the world :) It's that support that I'm talking about today. When I received my first negative review, I was almost prepared to give it all up... until my fellow author pals put it into perspective for me. 'It was just one bad review, get over it, move on. The positive reviews will far outdo the negative ones', and they were right! But if it wasn't for the support of other authors, I wouldn't be here doing this today and I'm so incredibly thankful to them for that.
Support is something that every author needs. And so whenever I find a group that offers all the support I could possibly wish for, I jump at the chance of being a part of it. I'm a member of a few such organisations but The Rave Reviews Book Club really does pull out all the stops to give us what we really need to help get ourselves out there. I love these guys and I'd really encourage you to join them and see for yourself how awesome they really are. So what are you waiting for? Go join up now!
But before you do, pop over to a few other recruitment day blog posts and vote for your favourite. I hope it's mine :)

Book Blast: Warrior by Kasi Blake

13.7.14

I'm absolutely delighted to announce that today is the official release date for my lovely author pal Kasi Blake's latest book, Warrior! So please show her some love and go check it out.....

Official Release Date: 7/13/14
This is the third book in the Order of the Spirit Realm Series.  If you haven't read them, start with BAIT.  It is free at most online ebook vendors such as Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Smashwords, etc.

This book begins two years after HUNTER ended.  Bay-Lee is fighting a Devil Tree while her mentor and boyfriend, Nick Gallos, watches from the sidelines.  Things are tense between them.  She wants to amp up their relationship, but Nick has put on the brakes.  He's got one foot out the door, and she doesn't know what to do about it.

WARRIOR brings about closure and change, some good and some bad.  Together, Nick and Bay-Lee will take on the werewolf pack that killed her mother, face their twisted pasts, and face a friend turned enemy.

Quotes from WARRIOR:

Bay-Lee: You never told me I wasn't supposed to kill it.  You told me I couldn't kill it.
Nick: I should have known you'd take that as a challenge.

Keisha: Oh, don't play Miss Innocent with me, girl.  It was your idea for me to trade places with Nick's banshee, but you've been wearing a pouty face ever since.
Bay-Lee: I don't have a pouty face.
Keisha:  Sure you don't.

Bay-Lee (after knocking Keisha down):  You hit on my boyfriend, so I thought I should hit on you.

Little girl:  There's a monster in my closet.

He added, "Reapers aren't supposed to care. They don't have compassion or love inside of them."
"But you're still human."
"Because of you!"  It sounded like an accusation instead of gratitude.  "I haven't lost my humanity because I still have you.  His facial muscles tightened.  "I can't keep living like this."
Nick threw the talisman down and stormed off, heading for the castle.
She scooped the talisman off the ground.  It was precious, even if it was malfunctioning.  Without it Nick wouldn't be able to stay with her.  She ran until she caught up with him.  Slipping it into his hand, she begged him to keep using it.  "At least until we find something else.  Please."
The purple half-circles beneath his eyes attested to his lack of sleep and made her want to cry.  She cringed when he slipped the thing around his neck.  Asking him to live like this was horrible, but she couldn't let him go, not yet.

Making a great book trailer with P.S Broaddus

12.7.14

After watching the book trailer for A Hero's Curse by P.S Broaddus, I just had to ask him to write a guest post on the subject. I absolutely LOVE what he wrote. Read on and scroll down to see his AMAZING trailer...

It's fun to see a good book trailer (and occasionally hilarious or painful to see a bad one). The average cost for a decent and professional two minute film clip can run anywhere between $1,000 to $5,000 (and it goes up from there).
But where would you start? And what if you don't have $5,000 to drop on a two minute promotional? (Or $10,000 to $15,000 for that matter).
Don't panic. If you don't have that kind of money to spend on a book trailer, you're in the good company of most other writers.
Here's what worked for me, and maybe it can help you as well. Also on the topic of book trailers, check out the interview Suzy did with Christopher Mannino.

1. Take an inventory of what you know (and what you don't).
Start with what you know. We've all heard this as writers and the principle carries over to film. As you look at shooting your own film trailer, what strengths do you bring to the table? Do you have a background in theater? A penchant for putting together family videos? Some experience in Final Cut or Adobe? Obviously one strength you bring as a writer is the knowledge of your own story. How would you as the author want to communicate that story? What scene or sequence would communicate best?
Likewise, take inventory of where you'll need help. Don't know anything about post-production? What about setting, lighting, props, camera and angles? Marketing beforehand? Marketing afterwards? Start a list of 'must haves' that you will have to outsource. (Try to keep this list small - for example, you may not know much about marketing on YouTube, but rather than outsource do a quick Google search on the subject or learn from other writer's blogs, like this one!)

2. Work with who you know.
It's all about who you know. At least it is if you don't have oodles of money. Is there a writer's group in your area? Do any of those members use a camera or shoot film occasionally? (The genre barrier is thinner than you might suppose). Some aspiring camera crew flunkies are willing to shoot for a minimal fee or just to get another piece in their portfolio. Ask your local groups, clubs, or church members. Who do you know who can fill those 'must have' roles you detailed above? The more roles you can fill with volunteers the less green stuff you'll have to fork over to professionals. I was able to find a couple of members of our writing group to help, a girl from church volunteered, a couple of guys from a sports club as well as family and friends. I bought a lot of pizza, everybody had a great time and we ended with a piece I was proud of.

3. Communicate the story through film.
As a writer you've protected your baby through thick and thin. You may have even chosen the self publishing route to maintain creative control. However, as you dive into trying to capture your story on film, you'll be forced to tweak your own work. For our own set on A Hero's Curse it was great fun to get to see it come to life, but tweaks had to be made to the story, even for a two minute promotional trailer. Most of the tweaks are small - the cat didn't look that way in the book (but this was the cat that showed up on film day), Essie didn't dress that way until half-way through the book (but it was the best thing for camera), and a couple of other minor tweaks. I think the biggest change came with the blindfold. Essie prefers to appear sighted - so she doesn't wear a blindfold - in a way she tries to reject that part of herself and do her best to hide it from others - so when she puts on the blindfold two thirds of the way through the novel, it is in a moment of desperation. But a few chapters later, when she chooses to leave the blindfold on, it is a statement that she has accepted who she is and she is ok with that.
To shoot the trailer however, we had to somehow show she was blind in a climactic way as a "reveal" - the best way to do that was by her putting on a blindfold. It works great in the trailer and communicates exactly what we needed to show. Be ready to be flexible as your story transitions from the written page to the live action screen. Take other's suggestions seriously. And recognize you are shooting a trailer, not writing another book chapter.

4. Love and like your finished work.
Make sure you love the piece when it is finished. If you don't love it, find out why not and work to make it right. It might mean re-shooting a scene or re-writing the script. Don't be afraid to take the extra time to get the details right. (Of course, this has to be balanced by not exasperating your volunteer help!) If you love it, you can 'like' it, and others will too. Uploading to YouTube, posting to your blog and then linking to Facebook and other social media can generate a buzz about your story. Take advantage of the buzz by creating contests, adding good content and being available to interact. (Suzy does a great job with her contests posted with her interviews).
Fun facts: it took nearly twenty hours of prepping for and shooting film to create a 2:45 clip. It took nearly another twenty hours of post-production work and marketing prep leading up to our launch. Our camera guy got a terrible nose bleed as we were shooting Essie in the historic house - but he shot through it. Our primary candidate for Tig's role didn't show - so we were able to catnap a friend's long haired cat (with permission) for the shoot. Unfortunately the cat had been shaved the day previously - but he did marvelously anyway and added something distinctive.
We burned dozens of maps to get the shots we wanted.

I'm always excited to talk about writing, film, and good stories.

Here's the finished trailer:

Interview with YA fantasy author John Connors

11.7.14

Can you tell us a little about your latest book, Elemental?
It’s an action-fantasy-adventure story about a thirteen year old boy whose parents move unexpectedly to a tiny village that is actually the place around which all the natural or elemental energy in the world congregates. This is the energy that powers the planet. He is able to use some of this energy through the earthstone, a piece of volcanic rock centuries old. So he goes from being this ordinary boy to having an extraordinary responsibility. This book is the first of a series and tells the story of his first adventure battling a strange duo that want to take control of this elemental energy.

What inspired you to write it?
It was partly inspired by a time about 10 years back when global warming and the environment had become one of the top news stories and I wanted to create something that addressed it. The story evolved from there. Originally it was a terrible idea to suggest that somebody with special powers could solve the issue but it got me thinking on the idea of everything on Earth being connected. Here we are all sitting on this one tiny planet yet we mostly imagine our own lives in isolation yet they are not. The other thing I wanted to do was create a story that didn’t rely on already established myths and fables so there are no dragons or elves or wizards just the natural power of the planet. I like the idea that some younger readers will imagine they could run into any of these elemental things in their own neighbourhood. Even the earthstone is a real piece of rock called Obsdian.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
The cover is done by Laura Gordon, it wasn’t my idea, I found it by chance and as soon as I saw it knew it was perfect for the book as it suggests a great but mysterious power connecting everything.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
I don’t really know actors of the age to play the kids. Tom Allenby is not a Harry Potter type hiding in a cupboard- he’s lively and outgoing which makes a change for heroes of kids’ books. He’d have to be played by a cheeky young London actor. Mrs Brackley is definitely based on an actor called Brenda Fricker and Lord Pennington is Freddie Jones! He’s only a small role in this book but the Chamberlain character would be played by Lee Ingleby.

What is it about the YA fantasy genre that appeals to you so much?
The audience gives you the best of both worlds. On the one hand they will pick up on anything that doesn’t make sense within the fiction so it is a rigorous readership that challenges authors. People imagine it’s easier to write for a younger audience but young readers notice everything. On the other hand they are much more willing to accept the fantastical. If you present them with something like a flying horse an adult reader will say `that could never happen` whereas a YA or child reader will think `wouldn’t it be great if that did happen`. As long as you start from a familiar point you can take them on an incredible journey. The other thing I like is that you can smuggle important pointers for life into the narrative. All children’s and young adult stories are really about growing up.

Can you explain why you chose this setting in England?
It’s mainly because I know it! The village is based on somewhere I knew quite well a while back so I can picture the places and buildings and so on. We have very interesting geography too and lots of old atmopsheric buildings. Ravensthorpe Hall in the book was built in the 1600s. England has such a long history and unusual varied landscape that it’s inspiring to set stories there.

What made you want to become an author?
It happened by accident! It was around the time when both Harry Potter and the Dark Materials books were becoming popular and like a lot of adults I’d sort of forgotten about children’s fiction. Anyway I read them and started to think perhaps I could write something along those lines but different. I’ve always liked fantasy TV and films especially if they have a basis in reality.

How do you come up with character names?
They changed a lot during the course of many re-writes. Early on the hero might have been a boy or a girl, but because I’d been a boy I felt more secure writing as one and Tom was a name that sounded heroic somehow. Allenby I chose from a list of names; it’s hard to find names that have not been used in other stories! I chose Jake because it sounded spiky like his hair and Tyrell from the Blade Runner film. Kyle has an American father so I thought he’d have an American name even though essentially he’s English. Amber and Jade were named because in England there had been a trend for unusual names and I thought it would be typical for someone to name twin girls something like that. The name Brackley comes from a spy novel I read as a child and Chamberlain after our most infamous prime minister!

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
I used to read a lot of science fiction when I was younger and Dune was a big favourite. It had a real sense of another world.

Who, or what, inspires you?
I suppose I’m inspired by the idea of having this story I’ve nurtured for a decade read and enjoyed by others. Writing is communication and although it’s daunting to release the book into the world it’s also inspiring when just one person says they enjoyed it.

Where is your favourite place to write?
I did some of the writing for this book outside in the summertime. It’s the same weather as the story and it definitely helped but as the next one is set in winter time I will be doing that indoors!

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Lord of the Rings; it really brings the book alive.

Name two of your favourite authors.
From the past Charles Dickens, from the present Philip Pullman

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
It would have to be the obvious ones of Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. They could give me a few tips!

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I can’t eat curry!

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
I don’t think my life’s interesting enough for a movie!

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
It’s less than ten minutes’ walk from Penny Lane as in The Beatles song.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I’m working on the second book in the series, the follow up to Elemental, at the moment.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
I haven’t got a list- I’m too busy!

Favourite myth / fairytale?
I used to love the old Greek myths about the Gods falling out and banishing each other!

Who did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be Doctor Who!

John Connors was born and lives in Liverpool and Elemental is his first novel. However it has been written several times so there is now no longer a talking worm! Review: The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

10.7.14

Cassie Hobbes is not like most teenagers. Most teenagers don’t lose their mother in a bloody, unsolved kidnapping. Most teenagers can’t tell who you are, where you’re from and how you’re likely to behave within moments of meeting you. And most teenagers don’t get chosen to join The Naturals.
Identified by the FBI as uniquely gifted, Cassie is recruited to an elite school where a small number of teens are trained to hone their exceptional abilites.
For Cassie, trying to make friends with the girls, and to figure out the two very different, very hot boys, is challenging enough. But when a serial killer begins recreating the details of her mother’s horrific crime scene, she realises just how dangerous life in The Naturals could be.

Review
Holy Cow this book was fantastic! I'm a huge fan of FBI crime drama on TV (Criminals Minds, etc) but I don't often read it. Sometimes though, it's good to climb out of your comfort zone and try something a little different.
What I really liked about the book is that, although it's about serial killers it's still a YA book at heart and I just love reading anything and everything YA.
When I first started The Naturals I found I was completely hooked from literally page one and ended up reading well into the night trying to figure out who the serial killer was. Surprisingly, I couldn't work it out (and I'm usually pretty good at that) and was really surprised with the ending (pleasantly so) which was left pretty open, in readiness for the sequel I guess, which I understand is coming November 2014. I definitely want to read more about Cassie and the other Naturals. Something to look forward to!
