The Bella's Point Blog Hop Challenge

15.7.14

I'm so excited to be taking part in Elizabeth Seckman's very first blog hop challenge! Elizabeth is one of those totally adorable awesome author bloggers that most people would do anything for. Hence this blog hop challenge ;)
But first, let me tell you about Elizabeth's awesome new book, Bella's Point (with the most gorgeous book cover, I might add!)...

Isabella Troy Stanley is a divorced, slave freeing pariah surviving in the shattered post Civil War south the only way a fallen debutante knows how.
She heads to a Yankee prison and buys herself a husband.
Jack Byron is the former Troy plantation stable boy and object of young Bella's affection. He rejected her then, and he's still not sold on the idea of marrying her now.
It’s complicated.
Though to Bella, it’s simple: make Jack love her, marry her, and live happily ever after. The plan seems to work...at least until her secret is revealed.

Elizabeth is a wife, a mom, and a writer. She has four wonderful boys, one dusty house, and three published books to her credit. Feel free to check them out and buy them HERE! Erm, the books, not the kids or the house...though all things in life are negotiable ;)
You can find her here - Blog // Facebook // Twitter
Cover art by Sprinkles on Top Studios.

The idea of the blog hop challenge is that us bloggers must write something (anything) using the prompt 'The year was 1865'. So here's my piece of flash fiction :)
Don't forget to check out the other participants below!

The year was 1865 when I was fed the blood of a vampire. Little did I know at the time that I would still be alive today. It's July 2014 and I am a vampire. Not the evil blood-sucking kind that kills for the fun of it, no of course not. That's not me at all. I'm a nice vampire. I live in a nice house in a nice neighbourhood with my nice family. Technically, they're not really my family but we've lived together for just over a hundred years so they're as close to a family as I'm ever going to get.
So where was I? Oh yes, a nice vampire with a nice house and a nice neighbourhood and a nice job. I'm an author, you see. Have been for as long as I can remember. I write books about vampires – the gory kind with lots of blood and murder and disgusting stuff. I know, I know... it's a far cry from the real me but, hey, what can I say? It sells!
I've tried my hand at writing more genteel stuff but I can't quite get my head around it. I ought to be good at that, especially the historical kind considering the fact that I've been alive for... erm 169 years. Yes that's right, I've been twenty years old for 169 years. That's a long time to be alive. But I digress, my writing. That's right. I'd like to be able to take complete advantage of my being alive for 169 years but I get so bored of history. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Why would I write about it?
They say write what you know, don't they? But bah... bored, bored, bored. I want to be surrounded by blood and gore... the fictional sense of course. So that's who I am, anyway. So tell me, who might you be?

If you love vampires, then you must read this!

16.3.13

Want to know why you really should read Corcitura by Melika Dannese Lux? Then read on for this fascinating guest post by Melika...
If you are a devourer of vampire fiction (from Dracula to Twilight and everything in between), you probably think all new territory has been explored. Let’s face it, there’s not much left that can be written about everyone’s favorite bloodsuckers. Corcitura, however, has been called “a startlingly original take on the vampire mythos.” Yet if you are still not convinced that this book is right for your discriminating vampire fiction palate, allow me to try and persuade you.
What starts out as a story of two best friends experiencing their first taste of freedom by setting out on a solo tour of Europe quickly explodes into a twisted untangling of centuries-old secrets as our protagonists are forced to flee from people who turn out to be much older—and somehow possess alarming otherworldly powers—than they originally appear. I am talking, of course, about vampires, and in this novel, the two that attack one of the main characters are the stuff of nightmare.
But vampires are only one facet to this multi-faceted tale. Not only are the vampires horrifying, and their trickery something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but they have fascinating histories that are inextricably linked with one of the main protagonists and his family—especially his sisters, who have a crucial role to play in how this story works itself out. If you love seeing female vampire protagonists having a major role in the outcome of the story, then you will love the two in this book. Let’s hear it for the girls! They have enough history and chutzpah to fill volumes more—which is my intended plan. They also happen to be werewolves. And if that duality doesn’t intrigue you, I don’t know what will!
If you read to lose yourself in different times, places, and worlds, this novel will certainly fit the bill. Not only is it set in the late 19th century, but you basically get to travel around the world for the price of admission. Of course, vampires are chasing you all over Europe, but what a ride! London, Paris (twice, the return trip being my personal favorite because of the scene in the Musée Grévin wax museum: talk about creepy! You’ll never look at clowns the same way again), Athens, Greece (where the first attack occurs), Brasov, Romania (where hidden relatives reveal themselves and the second and final attack takes place, solidifying one of the characters as the Corcitura), Venice, Italy (probably my favorite scene of the book—gondolas, Sangue di Vita, vampiric revelations, a den of the undead, shattered windows, and twenty foot drops into Venetian canals—you know, just another average day in La Serenissima), end of the century New York (watch out for the scene at the shop window), Prague (is there any city more fitting for mystically creepy shenanigans than this one?) Cluj and Sighişoara, Romania (where even more spooky doings and confrontations take place), Cologne, Germany (where the “Legacy” of the Corcitura is revealed in startling fashion), and finally an orphanage in London, where the last link in this tangled family chain is discovered.
Although vampires provide the conflict for the story, the main focus is on the characters and how they deal with the (oftentimes) awful and terrible things those vampires do to try and destroy their lives. If you tire of being shackled to the same narrator for an entire book, you will not have to endure that here, for Corcitura is told by using three different narrative voices. For more than half of the novel, our main narrator is Eric, who begins the story as a callow 18-year-old and ends as a 26-year-old with more knowledge of the world of “vampiric politics” than anyone could ever want to know. Then there is Madelaine, whose fascinating story beings midway through the second half of the novel in 1894 New York, and whose entrance into the saga could quite possibly prove to save one of the character’s lives in the end. Madelaine is fiercely loyal and as exciting and entrancing as the milieu in which she lives. The section in New York introduces a whole new world to Eric and makes him see that what he went through with the vampires in the past does not have to define his future. The characters Eric meets in this interlude grant him a much needed reprieve from the constant anxiety he has endured fighting for his life against creatures that by all rights shouldn’t even exist. But once marked, forever marked. After Eric has settled into what he hopes is a new and happy life with new friends and new loves, the vampires come to call and everything spirals out of control for him and those dearest to him from that point forward.
Out of all the narrators, Zigmund Fertig, the last character to tell his story and bring the book to a close, is my favorite, and I hope you will love him as much as I do. What a history this man has! His past weaves through the other sections in the novel before he even comes on scene, especially his connections with one of the main female vampires. The meeting of the two after so many years apart, and so many misunderstandings, is one of the most impactful and harrowing parts of the book, for Zigmund must make a decision as to whether to hold on to specters of the past or put aside his anger and join together to set his family and newfound friends free from the plague that has haunted them for centuries. Zigmund’s chapters crystallize all the narratives, history, and threads/character storylines into place and end the novel with a bang. Literally. There are not one, but three “endings beyond the ending” that keep you breathless and in suspense about how much influence these vampires truly have even until the last page is turned.
If you love terrifying vampires (And who doesn’t?), a thrilling, intricate story where something mentioned in chapter four has a huge bearing on the outcome of the story and not a word in this 700 page novel is wasted…but most importantly, if you want to read about characters you’d wish to know in real life (Except those vampires!) and root for them to have lives by the end of the book, then I invite you to lose yourself in this otherworld where vampires abide by no rules but their own.

About the author
I write historical fiction, suspense, supernatural thrillers, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, short stories—you name it, I write it! I love to read just about anything and everything and am particularly fond of historical fiction, the classics, mysteries, epic fantasy, history, and non-fiction. I am also a classically trained soprano/violinist/pianist and have been performing since the age of three. Additionally, I hold a BA in Management and an MBA in Marketing.
I am a HUGE fan of Psych, most British drama, comedy, and mystery shows, and am always up for a movie quote challenge. Jaws is my favorite movie of all time, with The Lord of the Rings being a very close second. Tell me something about yourself, and I’ll most probably be able to “Six Degrees of Separation” it back to Gandalf.
Lastly, I love to spend time with my family and friends, and I absolutely adore traveling. Not only is it great to experience other cultures, but travelling expands my horizons as a writer and sets my imagination reeling with a million different ideas for stories. If I hadn’t decided to become a writer (And there’s a Gandalf story for that, too.), I would have become a marine biologist, but after countless years spent watching Shark Week, I realized I’m very attached to my arms and legs and would rather write sharks into my stories than get up close and personal with those toothy wonders.

LOVE: Thicker Than Blood by Shalini Boland

25.6.12

OK... so perhaps it's obvious that I'm one of Shalini Boland's biggest fans but I can't help it - her books are just so brilliant. I've been eagerly awaiting Thicker Than Blood, Part 2 of the Marchwood Vampires series since I read Hidden (twice!). I completely fell in love with the first book well over a year ago and you can therefore imagine my excitement when I saw that she was finally releasing the sequel! SQUEAL!
Needless to say, I couldn't put the book down, it gripped me from the very first page and continued to do so throughout. I am so excited that there are going to be more in this series, my only hope is that I don't have to wait too long for the next one.
A superb read! Well done Shalini!

The Lost Soul is OUT NOW!!

22.3.12

I'm super excited to announce that the final book in The Raven Saga, The Lost Soul, is now AVAILABLE!!

December and Lilly have got their work cut out for them. Not only are they desperately trying to figure out the identity of the Lost Soul, and track him down, they've also got to investigate why Powell River's newest resident has got all of their men falling at her feet.
But when they learn that the Nephilim might be involved, it becomes clear that they're all in extreme danger...

EXCERPT
The stench of something rotten filled the air as the man tried to lift his heavy head. Opening his eyes, it took a moment for them to adjust to the strange dull light of a new day. Wincing, he managed to hold his head up just long enough to notice the smell belonged to a rotting corpse to his side. He heaved, but there was nothing left in his stomach. He hadn't eaten in days.
Weak, cold and hungry, he curled into a ball on the mossy ground and sobbed.
When he no longer had the strength to even do that, he stared up at the sky; the orange and yellow hues entwined in a rainbow effect as far as his eyes could see.
The only sounds that could be heard were his rough breathing combined with the gentle whooshing of the silver trees that surrounded the deep ditch within which he found himself.
A hummingbird appeared from nowhere, hovering above him, flying up and down and around his face. The man tried to focus his eyes upon it but his vision had become blurry.
When the bird came to an abrupt halt almost touching his nose, he realised it wasn't a bird at all.
A faint giggle erupted from the creature, making him jump.
"No, this can't be," he whispered, hoarsely.
The little creature with large blue wings nodded back, "Yes, it can," she responded, "I can see you are in dire need of help. I will gather my friends and we will return to get you out of here. You will be safe. Do not worry."
Disappearing out of sight in a flash, the man collapsed once more before he fell into a deep sleep.

How Powell River changed my life

23.6.11

The exact spot in Powell River that changed my life
Have you ever visited a place and just been blown away by it? I mean, totally and utterly awe-struck by its beauty? That happened to me a couple of years ago when my husband and I first visited Canada. We were immediately struck by how friendly the people were... genuinely friendly, you know? It wasn't just that of course, it was the natural surroundings that just took my breath away.
One particular spot had such a profound effect on me, in fact, that it inspired me to begin writing a whole series of books. That spot was located in Powell River, British Columbia.
We'd driven all the way across from Banff (not all in one go, mind you!) so we'd seen our share of gorgeous locations, but when we stopped and got out of the car, we decided we'd have a picnic. So we carried our food down to the shore and sat on these massive pieces of driftwood that were scattered all over the beach. I'm pretty sure I barely ate anything because I was too busy falling in love.
It was breathtaking... but it was also so inspirational. There was an air of mystery to it too which made me imagine all kinds of weird and wonderful possibilities. After reading, watching and falling in love with the Twilight series, I could imagine supernatural events happening right there in Powell River.
I wanted changelings, witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and more, all to have a place in what would later be known as The Raven Saga. It would centre around a young girl who moves to Powell River after her parents disappear and discovers she is part of a supernatural world. The first book, Raven, is out now. You can buy it here, and the second, December Moon will be out in September.
It was that little beach in Powell River that inspired me to write The Raven Saga. In fact, it changed my life. It made me realise my dream. The dream that I can write books that excite people, books that people want to read. I've already had messages from readers desperate to read the sequel! I'd like to thank Powell River for that.

Q&A with author Shalini Boland

15.6.11

A very warm welcome to my favourite indie author, Shalini!

Have you ever read a book that made you think 'wow'? If so, what book was it and why did it have such an effect on you?
My favourite book ever is The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. It’s a love story set in Russia during WW2 when the Germans blocked off all routes to Leningrad, trying to starve its inhabitants. Everything about the novel is beautiful and devastating and I lived every page.

Who is your favourite author and why?
Erm, see above. But I’m also in awe of Jean M. Auel and her magnificent Clan of the Cave Bear series.

Who, or what, inspires you?
I get inspired by all sorts of things: childhood memories, books, music, acts of kindness.
Writing-wise, I take my inspiration from authors like Anne Rice for her darkness, Audrey Niffeneger for her quirkiness and Suzanne Collins for her kick-ass-ness.

Where is your favourite place to write?
On the sofa in the lounge with my laptop, a cup of coffee and some chocolate – bliss.

What is your book about?
Hidden is the first book in the Marchwood Vampire Series. It’s part urban fantasy and part historical romance, and tells the stories of Madison Greene and Alexandre Chevalier who are both rebels in their own way. Fate takes each of them on a dark adventure and their lives eventually entwine, but this is only just the beginning.

What is your favourite film that was based on a book?
Sorry to be predictable but it’s probably the Twilight movies. I loved the novels and I think the films really captured their essence. I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed them so much if I hadn’t read the books though.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the main characters?

I’d like to cast complete unknowns into the leading roles. An eighteen-year-old version of Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian/Dorian Gray) would make a great Alexandre. And Madison would be played by someone raw and feisty, like a young Emily Lloyd (Wish You Were Here).
I can't think of any well-known actor or actress out there at the moment who fits the bill.

Tell us a random fact about yourself. I once sang with Basement Jaxx at The Brixton Academy.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
Mary Shelley is buried here, along with Percy Shelley’s heart!
Percy Shelley drowned in 1822 while boating off Livorno; his body washed ashore and was cremated on the beach. His friend Edward Trelawny somehow grabbed the heart from the flames and presented it to his wife, Mary Shelley, who kept it with her.

Thanks so much for having me, Suzy! It’s been fun xx
Always a pleasure, Shalini! And I have to agree that a young Ben Barnes would be absolutely perfect!! For more details about Shalini and her books, visit http://shaliniboland.co.uk

Guest Author: Shalini Boland

8.6.11

Books and music are my passion and I’ve always been a writer in some shape or form. Before children, I was signed to Universal Music as a singer songwriter. I had the opportunity to collaborate with some amazing musicians and songwriters and was lucky enough to sing with Basement Jaxx on their album Rooty and live on stage. But that all seems like several lifetimes ago now.

Since the arrival of my little monsters, I combine motherhood with writing Teen Fiction. I write the kinds of books I love to read - gripping young adult adventures with a spattering of romance and a sprinkling of horror.

HIDDEN, the first book in The Marchwood Vampire Series, is a romantic paranormal adventure that spans the centuries from modern England to 19th century Paris. It starts off in gritty urban reality but soon ramps up into historical adventure, archaeological digs, ancient legends and romance across time: On Madison Greene’s sixteenth birthday, her life in foster care ends when she becomes the heir to a fortune. But she also inherits something else along with the money, something secret and hidden that shouldn’t be disturbed … DUN DUN DU-U-UNN!!!

HIDDEN: The book trailer

I’m stupendously excited about the next two in the series. I have them all mapped out – I just need to get on and finish them. THICKER THAN BLOOD, the second book in the series, should be finished by the end of 2011 and it focuses on the chilling 8th century Byzantine vampires, as well as more from my main characters, Maddy and Alexandre.

July 2011 sees the release of my post-apocalyptic romantic teen thriller, OUTSIDE. The story follows Riley who lives in the near future, behind the safety of the perimeter fence. She’s always been shielded from the dangers facing those on the outside. But when her younger sister is murdered, she ventures out beyond the perimeter, into the wilderness of a very different Britain, to track down the killer.

HIDDEN is selling well so far and seems to be getting great reviews. I’ll probably cry when I get my first rubbish one, but that’s the way it is with this creative life and I wouldn’t change it. Thanks, Suzy, for giving me the chance to waffle on. You’re a star! Here are my links:
