What Dreams May Come: In Dreams Book 1 by Beth M. Honeycutt

what dreams may come
Reality is overrated. Or so Ellie Cross has always believed. Ellie is an ordinary, nothing-special girl who feels invisible most of the time. She’s the kind of girl who would loan her lunch money to anyone, but she’s definitely not the kind of girl to get noticed. Well, except by her mom, who constantly nags her not to be such a dreamer, and the class bully who makes her life miserable. It’s kinda grim for a girl who’s already painfully shy and all-too-aware that she “takes work.” But Ellie has a best friend, someone she can turn to whenever she has a problem. Well, some might call him an imaginary friend, since they’ve never actually met outside of dreams. And, sure, Ellie knows it’s kinda weird to have a friend no one else can see, but since her real-world friends currently number one, she figures an imaginary friend can only improve her social life. Even better, since he isn’t real, she can tell dream-guy-Gabe anything, without ever worrying that he’ll ditch her for someone cooler or embarrass her by blabbing her secrets. And so what if she happens to have an itsy-bitsy crush on her reality-challenged friend? Who’s it hurting, really? But things are about to get complicated, because there’s a new guy in school—a guy with hauntingly familiar eyes. A guy who knows things about Ellie that he shouldn’t have any way of knowing… What Dreams May Come on Amazon

beggar magic
In Gelia City, magic is music: a constant ever-changing melody known as the Strains. As their unlikely friendship strengthens and endures, Zeb draws Leilani further into the Highmosts’ intrigues. Beneath the polished, academic facade of the Highmost manors lurks a threat to the Strains. An unknown force consumes their music, leaving only heart-rending silence behind. Leilani and Zeb will do anything to save their beloved Strains, but as the silence grows, they face danger their previously sheltered lives could never prepare them for. Short story collection - Celebrations from New Pangaea by Brenda Duffey

celebrations from new pangea
"Celebrations from New Pangaea" is a collection of four short stories designed for adolescents ages 13-18. The main characters are male or female adolescents facing the challenges of adolescence involving separation from home and family as they try to make sense of historical and cultural events that have impacted their ability to do so successfully. "Springtime Comes to New Pangaea" introduces a young female of Iranian birth and culture violently forced from her home at age five and her coming of age in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the Iranian Nowruz (spring) celebration. "Juneteeth" is the story of a young man living in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. The story revolves around the African-American emancipation celebration known as "Juneteeth." In the summer before Devon Alcorn's senior year at Shawnee High School, he comes to terms with the roots of his slave ancestry at a family reunion held at My Old Kentucky Home State Park in Bardstown, Kentucky. "A Thanksgiving Story" is an account of a 16 year old indentured servant brought to North America by the Pilgrims in 1621. Dorothy tells the story of the journey across the Atlantic on the Mayflower and the struggle to survive the first winter at Plymouth Colony. After her Pilgrim family turns against the gentle Abenaki who had been so instrumental in her survival as well as that of the entire colony, Dorothy runs away to live with the Abenaki and finds her female voice and place in society. "The Season" takes the reader on a fantasy through Middle Earth at a time when gun violence and climate change are threatening the very existence of the inhabitants who have forgotten "the reason for the season." A sensitive fifteen year old violinist journeys to the top of the mountain to learn from an old priest, Friar Assalam, the story of the season written on ancient tablets long since lost to the citizens of Newkirk. It is then that Gavril brings the sweet music of the robin's song to restore the peace and good will long ago lost to the inhabitants of the village. This collection of stories is highly suitable as reading material for adolescents in their high school English or history classes. The intent is to bring awareness of a coming together of all the diverse groups in the United States to begin the process of finding unity instead of polarization and the building of a New Pangaea. The Praxos Eye

17.6.13

For those of you that have read some of The Morgan Sisters books, you might recognize this image...
Yes, it's the Praxos eye! I commissioned an old friend, Phil, to design an image for me and this is his interpretation. Isn't it absolutely stunning?! Phil specializes in tattoo design which is certainly apt considering the Praxos Eye is a tattoo that forms on the lower backs of the Watchers. If you'd like to be put in touch with Phil just let me know and I'll introduce you. He's incredibly talented and his rates are very reasonable.
I'm over the moon with his design! Can you tell? lol
I will be placing this image inside all of The Morgan Sisters books soon :D
Please like Phil's page on facebook ... he's only just created it and could use some love!

Indie Author Series: Pricing our ebooks

14.6.13

Photo by EJP Photo via photopin cc
Today, the YA Author Club is talking about how we decide to price our books - something that is crucial to gaining a good following. Personally, I prefer to keep my prices as low as possible so you'll find all my ebooks at $2.99 or less. In fact, I often make my books free. Currently, Raven, Daisy Madigan's Paradise AND The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw are free. Its a great way to create interest and so far I've literally had tens of thousands of downloads.
I don't believe in over pricing. If you do, you just risk alienating yourself from potential readers. Considering my books are aimed at teenagers, I want that precise group to be able to afford my books, you know what I mean?
So what about you? What do you think about ebook prices? At what price level do you say 'no thanks'?

Check out the other YA authors in the club!

Don't forget that there is also a novella (Daisy Madigan's Paradise) in the Morgan Sisters, which is FREE.  Raven, the first book in my other series (The Raven Saga) is also FREE!

Day 7 of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

19.11.12

Hey everyone! Well, I'm back from my travels in Lisbon to celebrate hubby's 40th birthday... and all is back to normal. Well, relatively back to normal. While we were away, a freak tornado ripped through the region. Fortunately, it missed the area where we live but did some major damage to three towns just 15 minutes away. Lagoa, Silves and Carvoeiro (where we used to live) had huge trees ripped up from pavements, the local football stadium is virtually no more, houses have lost roofs and windows, caravans, cars and trucks overturned and crashed all over the place and more. It must have been so frightening for anyone living there.
Luckily, it's all over and the freak weather conditions have changed. This morning, there's beautiful blue skies everywhere and, although a little brisk, it is glorious.
Just a bummer that I feel like I'm coming down with what feels like flu! I hope it's not though :(
I guess it's a good thing then that my Virtual Tour is online only! So you don't have to worry about catching my cold when you come on over and visit Raine Thomas's blog, where main character Emma Jane Morgan has plenty to say for the Seventh Day!
So what are you waiting for... come and join me and help me feel better!
DAY SEVEN

Day Six of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

18.11.12

It's Sunday... time to chill out and relax (preferably in front of a cozy log burning fire) and catch up with all your favourite TV shows. Sigh... I love Sundays. I'll be busy travelling back from a celebratory weekend in Lisbon though... but I hope to catch up with you all when I get back!
But before all that, come and check out the sixth day of the Virtual Tour where it's not me you'll find, but one of my main protagonists, Lana Beth Morgan who is posting on the awesome YA author Carlyle Labuschagne's blog.

Day Five of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

17.11.12

Happy Weekend everybody! Its Saturday (YAY!) and also the fifth day of the Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour. XX It's also my hubby's 40th birthday!! So Happy Birthday, Michael!! XX
I'm delighted to be over at the Books Complete Blog today, talking about the naming process. How I came up with the names of the characters in The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw. So do head on over to find out more!

And now, I've yet another fabulous review (*cue another happy dance*), from Amazon UK:
"This beautifully written story follows sisters Lana Beth and Emma Jane. I love the relationship between them and you can't help but smile when you read about them. They are total opposites yet exactly alike at the same time if you get what I mean. :) Lana, the girly shopaholic and Emma, the giggly goth have made some great new friends and gained some awesome powers. Loved the interesting characters and creative plot that leaves you guessing what will happen next with all the twists and unexpected turns *deep breath* but i feel sorry for Joe.I have read loads of books that start like this but WOW, what a way to take it Suzy!!! There are even more surprises as you dive further into the book. Can't wait to see what happens in the next books. You better hurry up Suzy because lord knows how much longer Emma will be able to wait to see prince charming again :)"

Day Four of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

16.11.12

It's time for yet another awesome review, from Amazon!
"The Morgan sisters Lana and Emma both have paralyzing phobias, until a weird compulsion pushes them into their fear. What happens is transformative, and literally marks them for life (you'll understand when you read it). But add to this that now Em can see and speak to the ghost of Joe, the lovely boy she found washed up on the beach who died in front of her while clinging to her hand.
In a coma, he speaks to her, seeming to wake up, but he doesn't. Eerily this happens again with old man Grimshaw not long after, and he repeats the same strange event. Spooked, the sisters don't know what to do, but Joe the ghost is certainly friendly and fun. And explaining how they suddenly have tattoos to their parents is a hurdle they don't want to jump, especially as they can't explain how it happened.
Then life throws them in the deep end, they're off to London for work experience and instead discover their destiny while losing Josiah (the ghost). This is an epic adventure which I could not stop reading. Literally from page 2 I was in this hook line and sinker. I loved the bad guys, the graveyard antics, the talking dead, the superpowers of the kick-a** ninja chicks, and the rite of initiation the sisters go through.
This book is packed with twists, emotion, adventure, and some cute guys. There's no escaping your destiny, the Morgan sisters find this out the hard way while trying to save Joe, the ghost they feel responsible for. Paranormal adventure has never felt so real and authentic. This could be happening right now and you would accept it because this urban fantasy is that realistic."

Day Three of The Morgan Sisters Virtual Tour

15.11.12

Its Thursday today and you can find me on the Bookish Blog where I'm sharing a very special excerpt from The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw.
In the meantime, here's another AWESOME review of the book by JeanzBookReadNReview Blog:
"So starting with the cover, which I did like prior to reading the book, the scene actually makes even more sense to you once you have read the book. The sisters look as different than chalk and cheese yet we find out later in the book they are closer than they ever thought. I won't give more details as it would give away too much in my opinion.
So basically the book is primarily about the Morgan sisters, Lana and Emma. they were adopted by their now parents when they were just babies. They literally were found on their now parents doorsteps! Upon reaching the age of 16 their lives begin to change... they develop certain "skills" which is quite confusing to them. Around about the same time they are to do work experience and as they live on the rather small island of Andilyse, it is arranged for them to stay with a friend of their fathers in London. Everything begins to be explained upon being introduced to the people at Praxos. Who is Praxos? Well they are a group of supernaturals who fight evil in what ever form it takes. Of course for every group of "good" people there is bad and the "bad" Supernaturals that fight against Praxos are called "The Skulls". The story has action, fighting evil, friendship, love and of course danger! and mystery!
The book is well written and very descriptive to help the reader visualize the places and people being written about. The book is aimed at the 8+ market of readers and I feel that the book fits this age group upwards very well. I would go so far as to say that this book could be the beginnings of a series as good as those by J.K. Rowling! The theme of good fighting evil is there, but this series would be more steeped in history and mythology, which in my opinion makes it even more interesting. The books will cover many supernatural races, which makes for lots to read about. The descriptions and words used in this book are not overly complicated, so would not put off a more novice reader. Yet the plot of the book is interesting enough to hold the attention and curiosity of an older child or more experienced reader.
This book is the type that children should be encouraged to read at school, to interest the children and perhaps influence them to read more.
Even as an adult I enjoyed the book and would love to read more. This book is a great start to a potentially brilliant series. There is so much scope for things to happen, more characters to be introduced as well as learning more about the existing ones. With the introduction of the Praxos Academy there is an unlimited potential for storylines, and relationships to develop. as for the characters we are introduced to in this series I definitely feel that we can learn lots more about the Morgan sisters as well as their fellow Praxos members. I also felt there was more to the whole thing of Luke breaking off his relationship with one of the sisters...
So did I enjoy this book? Yes, it's aimed at the 8+ market and I think it fits perfectly and as an adult would still like to read more of the Morgan Sisters. Would I recommend? Yes, especially to friends whose children are perhaps as not into reading as they could/should be as I think this book would grab a child's imagination and curiosity and encourage them to read more. Do I want to read more in this series? Yes, I will be keeping my eyes open for a Bk#2 Would I read more by Suzy Turner? Yes."

" The Ghost Of Josiah Grimshaw :well suzy has done it again ! loved suzys raven saga didnt think she could get any better .The ghost of josiah Grimshaw had me hooked from the very start and all the way threw . had a hard time putting this book down as I wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. I am desperately wanting more, I can't wait to see what happens next. A must read!! The only downside is i have to wait untill may for book 2"

The 'Look' Challenge

10.11.12

I've been tagged in the 'Look Challenge' by my favourite indie author, Shalini Boland!
This challenge is designed to help writers recognize where common words are over-used while showcasing some of your work. 'Look' is one of the most over-used words in writing, along with other favourites such as 'just' and 'suddenly'. The following exercise might help you find and change the offending words, and is a real eye-opener!

For this challenge, here's what you need to do:
Search your manuscript for the word “look” and then copy a couple of the surrounding paragraphs into a post.
Give a little background on the scene if you’d like.
Tag 5 other writers who’re working on, or who’ve completed, a manuscript.
OUT NOW!!!

Half an hour later, a faint groan escaped his lips, making the girls jump.
'Em?'
'He wants you, Em. He just groaned your name,' said Lana with a smirk as she tiptoed to his bed and looked down at the handsome young stranger.
'Grow up, Lana,' she said as she shook her head.
'Em... is that you?' he muttered with his eyes closed.
'Well, come and speak to him then,' Lana demanded.
Reluctantly, Emma stood and walked slowly to his bedside, pushing Lana to one side.
'Erm, it's me. It's Emma,' she whispered.
He held out his hand towards her. Emma's eyes opened wide and she turned to look at her sister who pushed her forward. 'Go on then.'
Inching her hand forward, she gently placed it in his. He squeezed it and opened his eyes. When he saw her he smiled, 'Em, is that you? I knew you'd come back to me.'
'But... but how do you know who I am?' she asked and he smiled.
'I could never forget you. I've been looking for you for so long.'
'You have?' Emma felt her cheeks burn while Lana sniggered behind them.
'Who are you?' she asked. He looked hurt.
'You don't know who I am?'
Emma slowly shook her head and he coughed.
'Please, may I have some water?' he asked with a hoarse voice.
Lana stepped out from behind Emma and filled the small glass from the pitcher that stood on a tray at the end of the bed. She handed it to Emma, who carefully placed the straw to the young man's lips.
'Thank you. Are you sure you don't know who I am?'
Again, she shook her head, 'I'm sorry but I've never seen you before.'
'That's impossible. You're my Em,' he whispered sadly. 'I finally found you after all these years and you don't even know who I am,' he coughed again, wincing in pain.
'Are you in pain?' asked Lana. 'Shall I fetch a nurse?' she said heading for the door.
'I... I... Em?' he wheezed as a coughing fit hit him full force.
'I'm sorry, I don't know what to do,' she panicked, bringing the straw in the glass of water to his lips again but his body began convulsing and so she stepped backwards in shock.
The door opened and a doctor in a white coat, followed by quite a butch nurse rushed in.
'Please wait outside girls,' she commanded.
Lana and Emma did as they were told, watching just before the door closed in their faces.
'What the heck was all that about?' asked Lana.
Emma looked at her sister and burst into tears.
'Em? I'm sure he'll be ok, Sis. Don't worry... he'll be fine,' she said, not quite as reassuringly as she'd hoped.
Pulling her sister away from the room, the two girls found a small sofa just down the corridor opposite a large window that looked across to Carlton Point, the highest point on the island.
Patting the seat next to her, Lana smiled as Emma sat down and leaned her head on her sister's shoulder.
