#YAIndieCarnival: Do you audio book?

28.9.12

This week, it's all about the audio book.
As much as I'd love to have my books out there for all to hear, I just haven't got round to it yet. Not because of lack of time or anything like that, but because I don't really know where to start!
In my mind, it's expensive to get a professional recording. Isn't it?
To be completely honest, I've never even read an audio book... or should that be... listened to an audio book? I'd love to, of course, but the ones I've looked at seem quite pricey and I so love to get my head stuck in a proper book, I'd much rather opt for that instead!
If I had a long commute to work, I'd probably have a different viewpoint as I can imagine it would be lovely to listen to a book while driving. But my commute is from my bedroom to my living room! (Utter bliss, I can tell you!).
I'd love to hear your comments about your audio books, what you think about them, how to get them produced, etc.

So what's new? And could it be The Next Big Thing?

26.9.12

Thanks for tagging me in The Next Best Thing Challenge, Gilli. Gilli Allan is the wonderful author of Torn and Life Class.

So what's new? Well, as you may know, I have been working really hard putting the finishing touches on my upcoming novel, the first in a brand new series, which I'm super excited about! And of course, the fact that I was tagged by Gilli to take part in The Next Big Thing Tagging Challenge. So here goes...

What is the working title of your book?
The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw, a Morgan Sisters Novel

Where did the idea come from for the book?
Oh gosh... I'm not really sure! I think some of it was sparked by a guy I met earlier this year who is a real Londoner. I knew I wanted to set the book in England (London and a fictional island called Andilyse to be specific). I had a rough idea about one of the main characters but I didn't realise she would have a sister until I started writing, and then the whole idea just developed as I continued.

What genre does your book fall under?
YA Urban Fantasy

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Ooh I love these questions!
I would LOVE Declan Alexander to be played by the very guy mentioned above. His name is Mark Killeen (above) and he's a British actor who I worked with on The Right Juice movie in April. In fact, I based his character entirely on Mark, to be honest!

Emma Jane Morgan - Emma Jane is quite difficult to cast, really. Ideally, she'd be played by a modern day younger version of Vivien Leigh.
Lana Beth Morgan - Jasmine Breinburg (she's the beautiful girl who starred in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics 2012). The moment I saw her, I thought 'wow, she looks so much like Lana Beth'.
Eleanor Haydn-Jones would be played by Maggie Smith and Emilia Fox.
Saleena - Ashwarya Rai
Patrick Morgan - Sean Bean
Audrey Morgan - Emma Thompson

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Sent off to London for two weeks of work experience, the 16 year-old Morgan Sisters soon find themselves being initiated into the ancient Praxos Foundation, one that protects the innocent while fighting evil, both human and supernatural.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
It will be self-published, just as my first three were.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
About two months. I'm very lucky that I am able to write full time.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I wouldn't really like to compare it with any, really, because all books are so unique and The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw is quite unlike anything I've read myself. The only thing I'd like to compare it to would be the Supernatural TV series... but for girls (teens)! That, and Sanctuary, both shows really inspire me!

Who or What inspired you to write this book?
I am inspired by so many different things... Mark Killeen, who I mentioned above, inspired me to write a book based in London and when I started researching into London itself, that inspired me even more. Another thing that helps me is Pinterest. I often use it to get inspiration. I actually have a Morgan Sisters Pinboard which I can just flick through when I need that extra push! The Morgan Sisters Pinterest Mood Board

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
The fact that it contains paranormal elements? Love interests? Two kick-ass chicks?

I've tagged a few other authors to take part in The Text Big Thing! To read their interview answers, check them out a week from now...

Author (and book cover designer) Interview: Emma Michaels

22.9.12

I am absolutely DELIGHTED to have the wonderful author Emma Michaels with me today. Not only is Emma a FAB author, but she is also an AMAZING book cover designer who did the most FANTASTIC job re-designing my covers for The Raven Saga!!

I noticed that you're having a mega Tour for Owlet next month. Can tell us a little about the book and the tour?
Yes, thanks to my amazing publisher Tribute Books there is going to be a 101 spot blog tour with short exerts from the novel featured on each stop along with an amazing giveaway! Here is the blurb:
Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.
Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

What inspired you to write Owlet?
There are so many moments that had to come together to give me the courage to write Owlet. When I was about ten, I was sitting in my grandmother’s bed and so sick I could hardly move. She didn’t know what to do to help me beyond filling me up with food and liquids so she brought me a YA book. I fell in love with it and read the rest of the series that day and all of the authors’ novels within about three days. But while I was reading, there was something that ate away at me a little bit and made me sad. The main character managed to run for five days to reach the man she loved in time to save him. I had asthma. I could never even run to the end of my block without doubling over and needing my inhaler. It hurt to know that if it came down to a life or death situation my health issues could hurt my chances of saving someone I love. As I grew up I realized, no they wouldn’t; there is always another way. I really started to wish there were a book out there with an asthmatic lead character who could show that to the world. So finally, I wrote one. I got tired of waiting and wanted it so desperately. I can’t regret it because writing Owlet helped me grow as more than just an author, it helped me grow as a person.

Is Owlet one of a series?
Yes, book two is titled Eyrie and will be coming out October 2013 and the final novel in the trilogy will be titled Stryx.

If Owlet was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?

Photo credit: RavenU via photo pin cc
Terrence Mann would make the perfect Nathaniel (Iris grandfather) and Summer Glau for Diana are really the only two I am perfectly sure of. I would love Iris to be played by someone unknown just so that the face would be synonymous with her specifically.

What made you want to become an author?
I don’t think there was an “I want to be an author” kind of moment really. It was more filling up crazy amounts of notebooks and my now fiancé asking me what I really wanted to do with my life. I admitted to him what I had never admitted to anyone and he told me to go for it, that even if I only wrote a book and he was the only person to get to read it he still felt it would be a great idea because it was what I wanted to do. So I did!

You're also a super brilliant awesome book cover designer (I know this folks, because Emma very kindly did the most amazing new covers for The Raven Saga), how did you get into designing covers?
I had a budget of $25 for the cover of my first novel and started out my hunt for the perfect artist. Of course no one is willing to work for only $25, it would be near impossible to even get anything back from it. So my publisher and I found a designer willing to do the base design and I built off of it. I realized as I worked on it that it was really something I was enjoying and as I got the opportunity to work on more book covers I slowly started learning more and more until finally I decided to make it official and became the cover artist for a publisher I adore. From there, it’s history.

What do you think makes a really good book cover?
Unique concepts and appropriate use of space. You need to know where the focus should be and there are so many ways to accomplish bringing the focus in on one point but I have noticed a lot of covers lately where the title and author name really don’t stand out as much as they should and I feel like, while the art is important it is ultimately about making sure the novel catches the eye of the reader and is the type of cover where you will easily be able to read the title and associate the image with it. A cover doesn’t make or break a novel but it can really help it catch the attention of readers who are just browsing.

Name one of your all-time favourite book covers?
Ohhh hard one. I have a terrible memory span so I would have to go with my current favorite which is The Flame of Olympus (Pegasus). I saw it in the store and stopped dead in my tracks to stare at it for a few minutes.

What genre of books do you love creating covers for?
Anything Young Adult though especially YA fantasy or paranormal.

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
The Fault in our Stars. A friend told me I had to read it and sent me a copy and once I did… just WOW. It is simply phenomenal.

Who, or what, inspires you?
I find inspiration in so many different places and forms but I think the main thing that inspires me is core emotions. Those moments that change a person’s life and where you really realize what you are made of. It is part of why I am such a huge fan of Severus Snape, Alanna from in the Hand of the Goddess and Paksonarian from an Elizabeth Moon series. I had a few of those moments and I feel like they are really what I draw on when I am writing certain scenes.

Where is your favourite place to write?
I write just about anywhere. I love being at a desk though and I don’t currently have one. <3

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Okay, so a lot of Harry Potter lovers are going to throw tomatoes at me for this but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. Like many readers I enjoy the books more than the movies simply because those books capture your heart and mind every moment you are reading them and immerse you in this magical world. The reason I love that movie is because while it doesn’t exactly hold true to the book, it brings it all back to me. I remember all of the details of the book and the movie and they come together. It is an epic finale that was bitter sweet because already the book series had been finished and now, the movies are as well.

Who is your favourite author (s) and why?
I have so many. There are the authors I love because of getting to know them personally and the authors I love because their books have really taken hold on my heart. My current favorite is John Green after reading The Fault in Our Stars. That book is brilliant.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
I would be so worried about being disillusioned about certain authors that I would have to go with someone… wait. I just came up with the perfect answer. I can’t believe I never thought of it before. Solomon, Peter and John from the bible. Talk about an interesting dinner party.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I love Doctor Who and consider myself a proud nerd.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
The island that inspired the ‘sand dollar’ in Owlet is very close to where I live!

#YAIndieCarnival: Indie Words of Wisdom

21.9.12

This week, it's all about 'indie words of wisdom', what we have learned since we became indie authors of YA fiction.
I've been doing this for a couple of years now and I guess I have learned quite a lot along the way. When I first started out with my first book, Raven, I didn't really know what to do with it, to be honest. After I'd tried the traditional route and had come up against a brick wall, I was lucky enough to be told about Amazon's KDP programme. And then shortly afterwards I was introduced to Smashwords. Both sites have proved to be so valuable to me, enabling me to self publish my books and reach a vast audience.
What's also proved to be just as valuable is the wonderful network of fellow authors and book bloggers I've met along the way. Without them, I probably wouldn't be where I am today, having sold literally thousands and thousands of copies of my books. They are always on hand to offer an opinion, some to critique my work or to beta read my work. I just love 'em!
If you're a newbie indie author and looking for a few other words of wisdom, I would suggest that one of the most important things for you to do is to write, write, write but also to read, read, read... in particular the genre in which you're writing. Not only is it a totally awesome way to spend time (!), but you're also learning as well. I believe I've learned so much from reading other people's work. It has undoubtedly allowed me to hone my skills as a writer... and the more I write, the better I become.
Something one of my author pals told me recently was 'never lose sight of your audience'. She is so right with this... if you're writing for the young adult audience, make sure you constantly keep them in mind when you're penning your masterpiece. Otherwise you risk losing their attention and you certainly don't want that to happen!

Author Interview: Elizabeth Seckman

17.9.12

I'm delighted to have author Elizabeth Seckman with me today. Check out the interview and please say hi, I know she'd love to hear from you!

I noticed that you have a new book out soon, can you tell us a little more about Healing Summer?
It’s a spin off from my first book, Past Due…it’s the story of the bad boy of the sexy Coulter brothers and the sweet little lady who will teach him a lesson in humility…and love!

What inspired you to write your current book, Past Due?
My sister requested a story she could read on a beach trip…and it had to be set on the Outer Banks…during the time when they moved the Cape Hatteras Light House…sort of like flash fiction… only in 50,000 words or more!
Check out the trailer below...
If Past Due was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Photo credit: yausser via photo pin cc
photo credit: Barbara.Doduk via photo pin cc
photo credit: Barbara.Doduk via photo pin cc
Gwyneth Paltrow as Jenna and Hugh Jackman as Tres Coulter…and since Craig Coulter from Healing Summer is the slightly younger brother, he could be played by Gerard Butler…and I’ll gladly meet with them both, just to make sure they have the feel for the characters. Gwyneth is a pro…she’s on her own.

What made you want to become an author?
I like to write. It’s like cheap therapy. Then the talented Dixie Browning, who has hundreds of books under her belt, was nice enough to give me a quick critique and she said it shows promise…that she thought I could do it IF I worked hard…so I did.

Name one of your all-time favourite book covers?
Good question…never thought about it. I’d have to say Heidi. In my copy, Heidi in a pretty dress on a mountain. That book was one of my first loves.

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl…awesome, humbling book. It changed my life.

Who, or what, inspires you?
I pray before I write…or at least take a moment to clear the clutter from my brain.

Where is your favourite place to write?
I really don’t care…craziest place so far? In a roller coaster line…it was a 90 minute wait and I was bored.
*But I can’t write with someone reading over my shoulder…HATE that!!!

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Gone with the Wind…and of course…the book was better.

Who is your favourite author (s) and why?
John Steinbeck. He never wastes a word, even his descriptions are part of the plot.

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
I’d have to go with the writers of the New Testament…imagine the tales they didn’t write down…I want to know about them.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I hate to waste time. It annoys me.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
West Virginia is the birth place of the pepperoni roll…and jokes about marrying your cousin.

I'm so excited to be part of E.J Stevens' latest cover reveal for her brand spanking new book, Brush with Death (Spirit Guide #4). So, drum roll please... here it is.... isn't it just GORGEOUS!!??

#YAIndieCarnival: Pictures from the carnival -- where we write

14.9.12

This week, it's all about pictures from the carnival - where we write. Sadly, I haven't got my own cozy little office. Instead I tend to write at the end of my long wooden dining table which is situated right in the middle of our open plan, living / dining room / kitchen.

Its actually not a bad place to write to be honest although when we eventually move (whether it be to England, Scotland, America or Canada!), I'm hoping for an office all of my own that I can decorate in such a way that will inspire me!. So for now, I have to make do with this little corner of the house. You can't see from the photo, but I actually sit under the stairs... my own little 'cupboard under the stairs' so to speak!
I use my exercise ball as much as possible to save my back - I used to suffer terribly with back ache, but since using this (and seeing a chiropractor once a month), it's a heck of a lot better.
My trusty notebook (from the Twilight collection, actually), goes me with everywhere. I feel awful if I leave the house and forget it... if I'm hit with inspiration without it, I don't know what I'd do!
My Kindle is usually next to me whilst writing, so if I hit a wall, I can just open it up and read a few chapters of someone else's book (I'm currently reading A Shirtful of Frogs by Shalini Boland. Its an adorable World War II Time Slip novel for kids). Something that always relaxes me enough to kickstart the cogs of my brain!
And I mustn't forget my pink laptop. Before I started writing full time, I didn't have my own computer. I just used my husband's but I kept on at him that if I was going to write seriously, I needed my own, and it needed it be pink!
I was right of course, once I'd finally taken delivery of this awesome machine, I wrote Raven! I would hate to be without it. Back then though, I wrote all over the house. It was difficult because our downstairs bathroom was being renovated and you can imagine the noise! Not to mention the mess! Much of Raven was written outside (not easy with such bright sunlight) and lying on my bed... which gave me horrendous back ache that I ended up having to go and have a professional sports massage (it was so good though!).
To see more pictures from the carnival, where we right, check out my awesome fellow carnis...

Winnemucca, a Small Town Fairy Tale by Laura Elliott

12.9.12

I'm always a bit nervous about reading books written by my lovely author pals... all those fabulous writers I've met over the past couple of years since I started writing full time. Because there's always that niggle in the back of my mind... What if I don't like the story? What if their writing leaves me cold?
I'm delighted to say though, that it's never happened. In fact, the books that I've read by my fellow indie authors have, more often than not, totally blown me away. And it's just happened again!
I read Winnemucca, a Small Town Fairy Tale by Laura Elliott in two days. Here's the description and my review...
When fear’s as blind as love, how far would you go to find your own happily ever after? One mistake will change Ginny’s life forever. One answer will set her free. Once upon a time Ginny’s road blood ripened, the day she got wise to love. Engaged to the high school quarterback, his quarter-carat ring and enchanting smile should have been enough for her. But, she stands him up and takes a walk where every step questions her happily ever after gone-bad and the fate of the mother she never knew. The mother her father refuses to talk about. Ginny fights to untangle her big, fat, lie-of-a-life on an enchanted road trip to Winnemucca, where she believes all her answers lie. To solve the riddle of her past, she must outrun everyone who wants a piece of her future–including a man determined to see she never has one.

Laura Elliott had me from the very beginning of this book. It's enchanting, beautiful, heart-wrenching... a real modern day fairy tale. Everything about it just shouts 'masterpiece'. It's the kind of book that young adults all over the world ought to be reading in college. Yes, it really did have that much of an effect on me. I'd put this up there with The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (one of my all time favourite reads), because simply put, I could read Winnemucca, a small town fairy tale, again and again. As I'm sure I will. I read the ebook version, but I'll certainly be buying it in paperback too so I can cherish it exactly as it deserves to be cherished.

All in all, an absolute masterpiece!
Get the book here.

Quest of the Keys by Scotty Sanders

11.9.12

I love helping authors out by telling the world about their new releases and today I've got some information about Quest of the Keys (great title, huh?!) by Scotty Sanders, who also happens to be a leadership coach. Nice!
Quest of the Keys was published by Brown Books at the beginning of this month and is a a new fantasy fiction book which tells an intriguing and adventurous story while imparting personal development and success principles for young adults.
"Quest" tells of the journey of Decklen, a young man who left home in disgrace only to narrowly escape slavery and death in the Minca Silver Mines. Sworn to return for those he left behind and joined by an unlikely sojourner, he sets out for the majestic realm of Leonesse. Before striking out on his new journey, Decklen receives assistance from the sage Octavius. But rather than swords and strategy, Decklen is presented a locked golden cylinder containing an ancient scroll. Tasked with opening the scroll, Decklen and his companion find themselves on an unexpected path of danger and discovery, in search of hidden keys that unlock the true secrets to success…and determine the fate of an entire kingdom.

Author Interview: Amber Argyle

8.9.12

Your new YA book, Witch Born, is coming out this September, tell us a little about it.
Witch Born follows Brusenna as she learns that Haven is not the sanctuary she thought. Unknown dangers plague the last of the Witches from within and without. The visit from the Creators has left Senna with more than memories--her powers are changing and putting her in more danger than ever, which strains her relationship with Joshen.
Will Joshen and Senna's relationship survive? Will Brusenna?

What inspired you to write the Witch Song series?
I wanted to twist something often portrayed as dark and evil and twist it into something beautiful. So I took ugly chanting Witches and turned them into beautiful singers. Their songs grow plants and change the seasons.
For my main character, I wanted someone shy, uncertain girls could relate to. Brusenna starts off as very mousy, but she grows into a strong, confident woman. I wanted to show young girls that often feel weak that they are born strong, they just have to nurture it.

How many more books are you planning in the series?
Witch Song
Witch Born
And then a prequel novella entitled Witch War that should come out in 2013.

If your books were made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Photo credit: discutivo via photo pin cc
Photo credit: gdcgraphics via photo pin cc
Joshen would be played by Chris Hemsworth (who I have a major crush on).
Lee Na-young would play Mistin
Meaghan Jette Martin or Emma Robert can play Brusenna.
Cord: Song Seung Heon or Ko Soo

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
LOTR

Name one book that made you think 'wow'? Why did it have such an effect on you?
I just read Born Wicked and adored it. I love historical fantasy. It’s going to be hot in the next few years, and books like this is why.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I can curl my tongue into a scallop shape. Also, I have a weakness for shopping. It’s my kryptonite.

Tell us something interesting about the area where you live.
I can be in the mountains/national forest in about five minutes. We love to go up and roast marshmallows and hot dogs (not in that order).

#YAIndieCarnival: All about the swag

7.9.12

This week, it's all about the swag! Now I've won a couple of postcards in my time, but never anything more exciting... and postcards can be a bit boring really. I mean, what do I do with them? Currently the three that I have are stuck in a drawer somewhere. Perhaps when those authors become superstars, I might be able to sell them? lol
Seriously though, do you love swag? I guess I do, although I'm only now realising it. I've never had any of my own until last week when I opened a 'shop' on Zazzle where you can buy all kinds of Raven Saga merchandise like coffee mugs, jigsaw puzzles, postcards (!), notebooks, water bottles, aprons and even bags! I know, I know, perhaps I went a little overboard!

So far, I haven't ordered anything to use as swag but it's all being planned... I just need to get The Morgan Sisters book finished before I can concentrate on anything else, but I'll keep you posted!
In the meantime, come and stop by my store and check out my goodies...
